Breathtaking

The best thing I've ever done, just go and see for yourself! Unfortunately due to the high elevation the summit is not recommended for overweight people.

Could not believe there was SNOW in Hawaii. But seeing is believing. It was very cold and windy at the top. Our sunset visit was facilitated by Hawaii forest and Trail. The driver was very knowledgable about the island and the sky. The tour would have been more enjoyable had the seats of the bus been more comfortable.

We made the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset and it was by far the most beautiful sunset we've ever seen. The colors went from yellow, orange, red, pink, to a dark purple. It really feels like you're on the moon or mars. It was chilly on the summit we wore parkas, hats and gloves. Be prepared for the weather,... More

We were advised to acclimatise at the visitors centre but not told that the summit closes just after dusk so we drove up only to be allowed five minutes by the Ranger... Very disappointing and the two Rangers need to work together so other don't experience what we did. We had traveled all the way from NZ too.

The day was clear and cool when we went to the Summit. There is so much beauty and magnificent power in front of you when you are there - it makes you realize how tiny we are in the long scheme of things.

We wanted to do the tour to the sumit, but $200 per person is a bit much for a sunset and snack. If you have 4 wheel drive you can visit sumit yourself. Just make sure your brakes are in good working condition, and bring warm clothes. The temp drops drastically in higher altitutes and after sun goes down. We... More

Our guide was excellent, the van was comfortable, the dinner was just ok but we weren't there for the food. The view at sunset was extraordinary!!!!!! I don't have the words for how amazing it was. But the ride up the mountain is long, extremely bumpy and feels endless. The terrain looks like Mars. And it was sooo cold up... More

Journeyed to the summit of Mauna Kea with Hawaii Forest & Trail (Summit and Stars Tour) in early June. We dined in a tent at about 6500 feet to allow for altitude adjustment. After dinner, we donned winter parkas and drove to the summit at 13,796 feet. Observed one of the most stunning sunsets I have ever witnessed! After sunset,... More

We rented a Jeep and did the tour during the day ourselves. It was well worth the drive an amazing sight to see. Do not hesitate to do this

I'm not much of a history buff,so traveling up to the tallest mountain was not very exciting for me. It was suggested only 4-wheel drive vehicles be taken. There is a section of the road that is rough and the ride back down does require a vehicle that can be shifted into low to avoid using your brakes too much.... More
