My boyfriend and I planned on hiking the humuula trail to the summit but it didn't go as planned. We started out going the wrong way and really tired ourselves out for about an hour and a half. We found the right path and it is insanely steep. There aren't any switchbacks the trail pretty much goes straight up. We... More

Don't get there just in time. It is good to chat with the wardens, watch a couple of the DVDs and take the casual stroll to a nearby hilltop for viewing. I would suggest getting there an hour before. The views are great. The centre does information sessions on the night sky until 10.00. For star gazers this would be... More

This was an interesting attraction to see. It was fun to be so high that the clouds were below you. The trip up and the view was breath taking. It was very cold up there and I had a winter jacket on. Saw a lot of people up there in shorts and tank tops. It was NOT the place for... More

Traveled to the top when there was no snow and clear sky's . Truly spectacular views.Sunset from up there is just a total different experience. Was cold and breezy at the top but was comfortable in light jacket and sweater. Would like to see what it looks like with snow some day. My wife had a bit of troubles with... More

View was great. Went with the Park service tour and got to see the telescope move, as well as the great view from the top of the world - at least the local top. Needing a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the top is a joke, but if you don't have one, you can't go on the park... More

It was very windy and cold at the top, but cool to see the 13 observatories, and to watch the sunset. The star gazing part was the highlight as guide Chris and fellow guide Blake set up their telescopes and pointed out planets, comets, and other celestial sights that we never would have seen or known of otherwise. It was... More

Yes, it's worth the drive, and it is a good long drive, going only up! Stunning views, observatory full of adventure, BUT IT'S COLD so don't forget to take a good warm coat and a lunch and water. No where to get along the way.

Visitor Information Center was too crowded for our family. Great idea to have telescopes out for the public but the center is undercapitalized and seems to be missing opportunities to not only generate more revenue to fund more programs, parking, equipment and other things that tourists and locals will enjoy. With more money it could be world class destination.

We went to Mauna Kea with Hawaii Forest and Trail. Our guide Eugene was informative and delightful and the stars rule! I never knew there were so many. It was stunning and we learned so much. What an evening.
