I've heard the stories about this road and how bad it WAS. Well this is no longer the case. This is the best and quickest way to get across the island. The road is WELL paved and has a higher speed limit that the highways...More

The Saddle Road is interesting to say the least. It rises to 6800 ft. (GPS reached 6824 ft.) in elevation and takes you through some moonscape scenes with virtually nothing except lava rock, areas of stunted and gnarly trees that reminded me of a 1950's...More

Wasn’t quite the drive I was hoping for. We stopped at the recreation area and the temperature had dropped 30 degrees and it was raining hard out. The fog and rain made it real tough to see while driving but what I was able to...More

I'm not sure if the rental companies still make you promise that you will not drive this road because it's in great condition now. We drove it at 2am in order to make a lava hike excursion at Kalapana by 4am. Highly recommend this road...More

My last review said to avoid this road like the plague as it was very dangerous due to fog, mist, mud, curves, and lack of safety features. Well, the state fixed all that during the last summer and it is NOW THE WAY TO GO...More

We drove from Kona to Hilo on this road and then stopped at Mauna Kea to watch the sunset on the way back. There are no services along the way so make sure you have a full gas tank and pack a few snacks. It's...More

Nice smooth road! Don't forget to bring food for a picnic lunch! Great place to stop and stretch your legs on way to Hilo. Clean restrooms!

At one time driving this road was a violation of car rental agreements but no longer. The road is in good condition and a shortcut between Kona and Hilo. It is just dark with no gas stations so make sure you have a full tank.

We've circumnavigated the entire island and there is no bad path to take. Saddle Road is the fastest way to travel between the windward and leeward sides of the island. Fast altitude changes, so expect your ears to pop.

There are no cliffs and nothing that requires a guardrail. Most of the road is very straight and very wide (mostly 2 lane, with occasional passing lanes). There is a short section (4 miles?) on the downhill run into Hilo... More
