We started our adventure at Joshua Tree National Park drove to 29 Palms to see all the sites there including the city's collection of wall murals on many of the towns buildings! We then headed north to the town of Amboy and Roys Motel and Cafe and beyond to Afton Canyon.
There are trails and slot canyons to hike, places to camp, sand dunes to climb,a crater to see,old mining areas to check out and places just to stop and breathe in clean desert air!
29 Palms is proudly home to the largest US Marine base and also features many stores, shops, restaurants and areas to explore!

We had already visited the visitor center at the park and that was not very helpful. Afterwards we stopped in at the visitor center in town. The woman there was extremely helpful, giving us good, detailed descriptions of many of the sites and hikes in the park. We were so glad that we decided to stop in there!

Have been in 29 Palms before and wondered what to do this time before going to Joshua Tree National Park-- SO-- stopped by the Visitors Center on the main street. This place is FANTASTIC. Instead of the usual "ask if you have any questions" a very nice young lady said welcome and got out of her chair and came over to us. She showed us all sorts of things to do in 29 Palms and the surrounding area. I never knew any of the history and sights to see and study. This town has a great history for the valley and she made this a great trip. You MUST stop in here and see what is going on outside of the Park and Marine Base. I will always stop in whenever I go back because they are so friendly and knowledgeable.

We stopped by a few minutes, mostly asking about the collection of Murals in town. The woman there was helpful. It is also Chamber of Commerce. There is a small park next to the building with historical and community references, also art and one mural in on the west exterior wall.

This is a cute little office, with lots of local art for sale. Some of the folks running it are knowledgeable and some are not.

The rangers in the Visitor Center are very friendly and welcoming. The displays and information are rich and well documented. We bought our annual park pass there. It turned out a real bargain since we visited most National Parks around the Grand Canyon area on our round trip.

We went to all three entrances of the park and by far, the 29 Palms entrance provides access to the best hiking. I am 60 and do not want something too hard but a 2-4 mile hike with a moderate incline will work for me. Seeing wildlife is my goal but a close second is landscapes to photograph. This is the place. I recommend Split Rock (2 miles round trip) for a pre-sunrise hike. About 15 minutes from the Marriott in 29 Palms. Limited restrooms in the park and no water so bring plenty. Cold mornings - 44 this morning but up to 60s by mid-day. Some hikes are very windy so good idea to bring long sleeves despite being in Southern California in a desert! Sun screen is a must!

As we drove in, we noticed this very tidy little building next to a very nice small park. Decided to check it out. They have free WiFi here, so I was able to send out my emails. They also have 3 computers set up for public use, with the request that you limit your use to 30 minutes. Large clean bathrooms. Local art on the walls.

There are many free brochures about the area, and some souvenir t-shirts for sale. If you have questions, they will be answered. This was a good place to stop.

Not really much help. The best advice they give is to bring plenty of water. And believe me he will need it here
