Ruse is Bulgaria's biggest town on the Danube with its main port just East from the city. An important bridge (for trains and trucks) crosses the Danube to Romania. It is possible to walk all the way along the Danube on an old disused quay to the bridge. Only the last part of this route leads through a post-communist industrial area. I continued on foot along a narrow foot path over the bridge to Giurgiu on the other side where I took a bus to Bucharest (one hour, 16 Lei), but it is also possible to return from the bridge area to Ruse with a local bus (green marshrutka) that goes regularly.
To the middle of the bridge is 8 km from Ruse center. To Giurgiu bus station is 14 km. Take your passport with you as there is border control.

While I can't say the Bulgarian Danube will compete with the castles and forests of further upstream, this region of Bulgaria is little traveled by foreigners except for cyclists on the Danube path and the occasional boater from the Czech Republic or elsewhere, and it's a pity because it is so stunning. I particularly recommend Tutrakan, an old Roman fortress town 50 kilometers in either direction between Silistra and Rousse which has the best views of all as it is all on hills overlooking the river. There are several good restaurants and hotels with views and a well long summer arts fest with all kinds of music and events, beer tents by the river etc. This was once a substantial fishing port and the mansions of the fleet bosses still exist, though some are in poor repair. The historic fishing quarter is now being all tarted up for tourism, and the Museum of Danube Fisheries is the only one of its kind in the country- recommended.

Our part of the river in area of Ruse is well maintained. Unfortunately the climate is so hot in the summer and so cold in the winter. Visit it in either in the spring or in the autumn.

The Danube coast near Rousse is high and provides an incredible opportunity to observe the Great river and the alien sunsets, which are observed all year round, but the most impressive are in the late summer and early autumn.

I have been visiting other cities on the Danube and due to the industrial footprint of Ruse, I have to say this resulted the less fascinating and more polluted.
They are restructuring the bank so who knows what the future will bring

For some reason, I was really looking forward to visiting Ruse. I was not disappointed. Make sure you go to the town square and enjoy the fountains, and all of the shops and eateries that are available.

Ruse is situated where the Danube forms a natural border between Romania and Bulgaria.

From the town square, the streets are wagon spokes and it is easy to walk around and not get lost. I didn't feel any fear of walking around away from the center of town.

If you're staying in central Ruse, it's just a few minutes' walk to the Danube ... which is undoubtedly (in good weather) a mighty and impressive river ... but what's disappointing is the absence of terraces or vantage points where you could have a coffee and view the river ... only a couple of scruffy cafes ...

Very few Bulgarians are even familiar with the splendors of the coast here. Tutrakan, between Rousse and Silistra, is particularly unknown, because it was a no-go area during communism, however it is wonderful town with Roman roots, amazing river views, and several good museums.
Most specifically, large parts of the Bulgarian Danube are eco-zones and bird sanctuaries- a nature lover's delight.
