Border crossing

If you enter Bulgaria by car you will probably end up passing through the river and therefore cross a country border. You can also go to a boat tour down the Danube.

We crossed the railway line and went down the steep steps and walked a mile along the Danube. There was a hotel tied up. Lots of barges. There are lots of pontoons, cranes, industry and country park all rolled into one. Stopped for a cold drink and ice cream.

Walking along the river is a relaxing, easy stroll - a good way to take in fresh air and enjoy the quiet.

The walkway was reasonable although further upstream towards the port it got tricky and seemed to be purely for commercial maritime traffic. Barges and the odd cruise boat moving along the river are interesting to watch.

Not the romantic Danube of "Blue Danube" fame but a commercial river with ports on both the Bulgarian & Romanian sides Lots of moored barges But still the Danube

Went to Ruse after 25 years and it is changed. I loved it then and I like it more now. It s a beautiful city on the shores of the Danube. The river is muddy here and very wide but still impressive when looking at it flowing towards the Black Sea. It is a nice place to spend some nice... More

If you are travelling from Vienna to Bucharest with the expectation that the scenery during your trip will be similar as from Amsterdam to Vienna, you may be somewhat disappointed. The Danube cruise to Bucharest is mainly through very flat countryside. You will have an opportunity to see riverside farms & houses & the gentle tree lined Danube, but not... More

The Danube is near the centre of town, and it's possible to walk along its banks for some distance. Cruise boats tie up alongside; at least one is permanently parked and is a very nice cafe. The opposite side of the river is Romania, and one can see the city of Giurgiu in the distance. Humbling to think how far... More

It's quite impressive and worth a look. I personally find the view from Belgrade's park a lot nicer, but I think that is also due to the heavy traffic on the Bulgarian sore. Nevertheless, it is a place where you can relax, have a nice walk, even a little picnic.

One of the spots in Ruse to visit, at the east end of the city you will meet the island "Lulaka" which becomes a huge beach during the summer.
