Although small, this winery was well-worth tracking down. I tasted quite a few "local wines" during my visit - and I am not sure Merlot is truly a local wine. Some of the wine on offer is truly undrinkable, but this small, friendly winery serves up pretty good wines - red and white - made exclusively from local grapes at reasonable prices.
We paid entry/wine tasting (BLG 4) and then ordered cheese, dried sausage and a glass of wine while we waited for our order of two bottles of red (one dry, one semi-dry, BLG 20 each) to take home.
I would also recommend buying a jar of pine honey. There is plenty on sale as you walk around the town. Delicious.

The place is nice, however the visit is quite short. The staff is not really talkative, however the wine tasting is good.

Fantastic guy, has his own stile , might seem rude to some people but actually, that who he is...
Shestaka makes and keeps his wine in a cave, doesn’t use any stabilisers and preservatives for it, a tradition left to him by his forefathers

The grapes in his wine are really authentic, but the Melnik's wine has a little bit strange taste and it probably will not be liked by everyone. Be very careful about Shestaka - I've heard he often offers you degustation from one barrel, and when you like it, he pours the wine in your bottle from completely different barrel.

In my oppinion the wine there has been always mixed with water. 6 years ago one of my friends was going to buy wine from there and when I tried it I told him not to do it. The guy was so angry to me that start shouting and I had to go out quickly so everybody was joking with me. But this is me I can't lie will tell you straight in the face. This year we went there with my husband and when I told the story to him he wanted to try it and accepted that I was right

"Shiroka Melnishka Loza" is a typical local red wine, that you can taste just in front of the cave, where Mitio called Shestaka (which means "born in the sixth month") keeps his barrels of wine.

When I arrived I was ignored by as the owner was on the phone. When he hung up and I asked to visit he blamed me for not stopping next to him.
The "tour" consisted of him pointing into the cave and telling me not much of anything.
During the tasting he became very angry when asked simple questions for example about the potential to age the wine. He started shouting about the fact he was a real wine maker not a rich business man running a chateau making arty wines.
I've been visiting wineries for 30+ years and I'd rate this the worst experience I've ever had at one.
Avoid this place.

The cave is very interesting and has quite an ambient. It really feels like going back in time. The owner speaks on how he tries to keep the tradition and it indeed feels like it.
The wine is OK, a matter of taste, keep in mind it's a rustic experience and so is the taste.
My kids enjoyed the feeling of going back in time while we enjoyed a nice snack and drink.

Me and my wife thought we would visit melnik as part of our holiday. We were looking for the best wine tasting experience we could find, but it wasn't meant to be.
We took the long walk to the far end of the village, and up the steep cobbles, just as the lonely planet book described, in temperatures reaching 28 degrees.
When we reached the top, the owner didn't say hello, but led us into the cellar and just stood there. I was obviously hoping for a bit of wine tasting, which I would have paid good money for, but it wasn't meant to be. When I asked if he spoke English, he said no, then in broken English said quite aggressively how tourism and people like us have been ruining his business. I don't think he quite grasps tourism.
We swiftly left, feeling very unwelcome, and walked back down to where many shops were offering wine tasting. We paid 5 lev to Try wine at the wine museum, then tried more at a restaurant further down, before buying a bottle melnik red for 20lev.
In future, I will be buying all my wine from tesco.

Three BGN for entry, see the cellar, then taste the wine. Cool ambiance, but the wine was so-so. View overlooking the town was beautiful. Wear good shoes for the walk up and down the hill.
