- NataliaLondon, United Kingdom585 contributionsWhen you are in Medjugorie - just go there and see it. Your efforts will be fulfilled. Very important place for catholic people. A frequently visited place where Our Lady apparitions have been said to have occurred since 1981. This is a beautiful and peaceful place of prayer, even if you are not religious. The climb is suitable for the physically strong people. The Vatican's positive judgment of the spiritual experience connected to Medjugorje highlighted: "abundant conversions; a frequent return to the sacraments, particularly, the Eucharist and reconciliation; many vocations to priestly, religious and married life; a deepening of the life of faith; a more intense practiceVisited February 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 9, 2025
- SakisSerres, Greece56 contributionsThis is a pilgrimage to the hill where Theotokos appeared to the children. It is a place of worship and requires respect. The approach is quite difficult and dangerous because it is a climb of about 500m. between mite and slippery rocks, it needs sports shoes and a lot of care because a fall into the rocks is sure injury. At the top of the hill there is the statue of the Virgin Mary and a large Statue with the Crucified Jesus Christ. The atmosphere is overwhelming and several pilgrims climb naked. The view is unique. Really worth a visit!Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 29, 2024
- MateuszKJaworzno, Poland279 contributionsI have been around Medjugorje several times, but I have never been able to climb the Hill of Apparitions. First of all, you are struck by the huge number of stalls with hundreds of souvenirs with the image of Our Lady, you can even buy a lighter. In the parking lot you can even buy olive oil and, interestingly, rakija :) The approach to the Hill is unpleasant. Lots of slipping stones, you have to be really careful not to fall. It's not far though, about 15/20 minutes and you're at the top. This is a place where you can pray to Our Lady in concentration, it is quiet here despite the large number of people visiting this place. You can go down a different path than you went up, but both are unpleasant to walk on.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 1, 2024

First you walk up a rather steep incline with gift shops and a restaurant on either side of the walk way. The path is paved, but again, rather steep and very, very slippery when wet. Apparition Hill itself is rather difficult to climb. Plan to go slow and careful. The issue isn’t so much the incline and the fact that you need to walk over and on top of large rocks. The issue is that thousands of people walked on those rocks before you, and so they are smooth and slippery, especially when wet. On the way up, are the Mysteries of the Rosary in large, beautiful bronze plates. You will hear a number of folks and groups saying the Rosary as they climb. It is a good idea to stop at each of the stations and reflect and also rest. As you continue up, you will see a Cross on the right. This is where Mary had appeared to one of the visionaries. So if you find Apparition Hill too difficult to climb, you can always stop here to pray. If you continue up to the top, you will reach a beautiful statue of Mary at the site where Mary appeared to the children. Further from that is a Cross that happened to be donated to Medjugorje from Austria, years before the Apparitions started. You can then go down a bit to the last mystery and walk up the other path to be on the path that will eventually take you down the other side of the mountain. This side is also rather steep with slippery rocks and two other Mysteries. Note that I mention this is a difficult climb and I am a very strong hiker. The difficulty, again, was not the length or the incline, but the slipper rocks. So be sure to wear very good walking shoes with a good grip – not slippery sandals, for example, and consider not making this hike on a rainy day. Final note: This is a very blessed and holy place. You feel it as you climb. Heaven touched earth here.

It was a very enlightening experience to witness such dedication among the pilgrims who made the climb up Apparition Hill. Some did it barefoot but I would highly recommend a strong pair of hiking boots as some of the rocks are quite sharp.
Everyone does it at their own pace and you pick your own path through the rocks just as you do in life. It obviously is a special place with many of the pilgrims sitting in silent prayer in and around the statue. So many people doing it for their own reasons. Walking sticks are essential for elderly or less able people. The descent can be every bit as difficult as the ascent.

As a Catholic, this was a highlight of our trip, however, the terrain to reach to shrine is treacherous. The rocks are sharp and slippery. Our elderly parents were with us, and even with walking sticks and help from us, it took one hour and 20 minutes going up on the way to the Blue cross and over an hour descending through the “less difficult” path. We were told that the path to the white cross is the most difficult. Please be aware of the different paths and plan accordingly with safe footwear as this is a rewarding, but dangerous, experience.

This is very tough even for those fit and able. Its a difficult climb more than a walk and takes about 30 minutes to get to the top. Looking amongst the trees it would appear that this rough turrain is actually man made as there is no where near as many rocks and given that lights have been installed to show the way it begs the question as to why they would not make the walk more accessable for all those minded to enjoy. I can only conlcude that it is meant to feel like a pilgrmaige in climbing to the top but it did seem to be embraced by my Father-in-law and the many also present.

As a skeptic I wasn't expecting much from my brief visit to Međugorje, but I was still amazed what a tacky and dispiriting place this is, a cynical means of getting credulous pilgrims to part money in exchange for overpriced tat - plastic virgins, cheap tea cloths etc etc. The shrine to the 'vision' is a garish blue cross with a badly designed madonna. The truly credulous can climb more steps to the top of the hill and worship every vision that comes to them. It's not even the original hill: deemed to be too much of a trek, the madonna and crucifix were relocated to make it easier for tired tourists. Awful.

I heard about this place and visited to decide for myself if it is for real or not. I saw nothing miraculous during my stay, but my 22 yr old daughter and I were both dramatically/positively affected by our experience climbing Apparition Hill and spending time at St James church in town.
There's something special about being surrounded by people of deep faith, who express it in quiet, profoundly personal ways that can't help but move you to reflect about the first things in life, and remind you not take your own religious convictions for granted.
Amazingly, the people of this town and the millions who visit every year don't make the reported apparitions the center of life in Medjugorje. What IS clearly their center is a deeply held conviction in the basics of the Roman Catholic faith: the love and mercy of God, daily Mass, welcoming confession in every language you can imagine, beautiful and touching Eucharistic Adoration inside St. James, and peaceful meditation/prayer in the stunningly beautiful, adjacent garden.
TIPS: be sure to spend time in the church garden at night, when the light of thousands of candles reflect off a giant crucifix. Also, during the months of Jun-Aug, be sure to complete your climb of Apparition Hill and Cross Hill before 10 AM - it's just too hot and these are NOT beginner hikes. And if there is a decent chance of rain, skip that day. Why? Both hills are very rocky and, given the millions of pilgrims who have walked over them, the paths are slippery when wet - treacherously so. Finally, let yourself go and get in the spirit of the place. If you're like us, you'll find peace like you've never felt it and a desire to return with others in the future.

The journey up Apparition Hill is much like our lives. The road is not meant to be easy. There are many rocks and boulders climbing up this hill, but when you are greeted with the Statue of Our Lady at the top, you get an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment and just a sense of pure Grace.

This is a tough hike, I have no idea how others on here were able to do this climb in 30min. It took us an hour or so tough hiking up uneven and jagged rocks. The climb seems to go on and on.
You are able to pray at each of the Stations of The Cross on the way. Once at the top you have a beautiful view around. It is a very peaceful contemplative place and doing this in winter did help with much reduced crowds. The snow and ice was a bit of a worry though.
The walk down took as long and a walking stick or 2 will help you. We got down safe but knees hurt - a lot.
For me the Risen Christ at the Cathedral was more intensely spiritual

Which is the nearest hotel to apparition hill?
Written August 7, 2019
Hello, i’m not sure if there is one very close to it.
However, Medjugorje is very small, and you can get to every sight by walk.
I was in the “Wojtyla Hotel” it was great, the service, the food and very comfortable, and it has a 2nd entrance from the back that you can use to get to the St James Church. (Less than 1 min).
