This lake and surround is so incredibly beautiful. The waters are crystal clear and even from a height of 100 metres and 20 metres + out you can see the fish swimming. The walk around the lake is about 1.5 hours but is really fabulous. There are at least three places for refreshments on the way around the lake.

Five km up from Scheffau into the Wilder Kaiser range lies the Lake Behind the Rock - the Tolkienesque translation of Hintersteinersee. The rock is an outcrop of the Wilder Kaiser, and mountains don't come much rockier. We stopped at the Seestüberl (Inn on the Lake) and went for a stroll along the waterside (well, iceside as it was March and the lake was still frozen). Then back to the Inn, which was empty on this late afternoon, but a pleasant place to watch the sun go down over the lake. The landlord (Hintersteinerseestüberlwirt) came with a beer and a hot chocolate (4€70 - much cheaper than prices up the mountain). Nice menu although it was too late for lunch, too early for dinner - the big restaurant was empty. A bit too chilly to sit outside too - we didn't break the ice and go skinny dipping.

We were staying in Soll and went to Sheffau on the free Kaiserjet buss and then got the free taxi up the mountain to the beautiful lake. As mentioned by another reviewer, the wooded side of the lake has some very steep sections but in my view the trip right around the lake is well worth the effort and very enjoyable if a bit taxing. If you really do not want to tackle steep uphill sections go to the end of the lake on the right hand side and return by the same path.

Stunning views as we walked uphill through the forest around the lake and back to the car park by the lower flatter pathway. Although it is possible to make the walk by the pathway in both directions. Had a break and lunch in a bar at the midway point. A great way to spend a few hours.

The lake is amazing with his green colour and cristal water. You can see fish living in the lake. It takes about 5,8 km to go arround. On this way you have some restaurant for drinking or eating . One part is hard because it is a main road. On the other side thete is a forrest walk. Better if you have a good shoes because it is a time for going up and down.

You can walk around the entire lake. The most difficult walking is right at the beginning if you start off to the left (still easy but a bit uphill) and you get great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Once you have done that it is downhill and once at the other end it becomes a paved pathway. There is a good cafe with great views and alpacas wandering around about 2/3rds of the way around with very good cakes!
The whole walk took about 90 mins and was worthwhile

We walked around the lake , stopping at the cafe with llamas. Wonderful views although the walk through the forest was more uphill than expected. However the swim at the end was worth it and the colour of the water was fabulous in the sunshine. We loved the experience made easier by the free Seebus service.

This lake is absolute worth a couple of driving miles. The lake lies as 883m in the Wilder Kaiser Mountain. Is has beautiful colors and you can hike around it in about 1.30u. A restaurant can be found at the parking place at the beginning of the lake and midway the hike there is a second one.

This is a very nice lake. You pay to park and also pay to use the lido for swimming. You can have a very nice walk around the lake with places to stop for a dink on route once you are on the north side.

We visited the Hintersteinersee on a warm sunny Sunday. We arrived by the free Seebus from Scheffau and stopped for a beer at the lido and just enjoyed the view. There were a number of people swimming, playing football and soaking up the sun. We continued on the open side of the lake and leisurely walked around the other side of the lake and again stopped for another drink and soaked up the view. The path is very easy to walk and was a little bit busy with traffic. The walk around the other side of the lake is through the trees and therefore no motor vehicles which was very pleasant and a little light relief from the heat of the sun. This walk can be enjoyed by everyone although there are a few steep parts through the trees. You will not be disappointed.
