Recently returned from our first ski trip to Ellmau, and we had a good holiday but I would not return. The snow was fortunately good during our week, just a little rain on the last day. The area is extensive which is a plus but to get anywhere you have to go from the Hartkaiserbahn lift which is 10 mins outside the main village on the ski bus, the resort would benefit from better lifts actually in the village to connect into the circuit. Also once up the top of the Hartkaiserbahn you have to take the same 4 or 5 runs every time to get into the centre of the circuit and then the same 4 or 5 runs back every day, which is a bit tedious after the third day. And finally the piste signage is amongst the worst we have experienced anywhere in 30 years of skiing. There are signs on the slopes with lift names but the lift names are not on the piste map where they use numbers. We saw many skiers standing , looking bewildered whilst trying to figure out their way home to Ellmau. On the plus side there are some lovely mountain huts for lunch & drink stops, we didn't have a bad experience all week when stopping for food or drink.
The village itself looks typically Austrian and quite pretty but there is very little to do outside of skiing, not many bars or shops.

Lovely resort to ski in. Good runs and well maintained. It is quite steep, like most of Austria so beginners may struggle on some of the blues, that had some quite steep slopes within them. Good variety of restaurants, both busy and more sedate.

Part of the the Kaiser Welt which offers a good variety of slopes and many ski lifts. Unfortunately I am giving a three star review since the slopes were not maintained properly at all. We be been skiing for many years and we haven’t seen so neglected slopes in term of snow quality comparing to French and Italian alps. Blue Slopes that you couldn’t pass without falling even if you are a good skier. And everyday the same dangerous areas… I would rather avoid next time.

im a novice skier with little confidence definitely needed refresher classes since i hadnt skied in 3 years
friends were cocky experts who wanted new challenges

we compromised on ellmau as no one had been there before and we based our decision on the number of ski runs available to each level of skier

we arrfived in salzburgh airport and used a shuttle service to transfer to ellmau .. bus was very clean and modern coach one hour trip to centre of ellmau. roads were very modern and no spiraling roads like in andorra where everybody is getting travel sick, and no need to stop half way for break because of distance

ellmau village is a 20 min walk from one end to another
lots of lovely little coffee shops for lunch and apre ski meals.
good value shopping also available but pay attention to shops along motorway when traveling from salzburgh airport to resort
as these shops actually have better value and more choice than shops in village. ad you forget they are there until last days when regulars at your hotel start coming back to hotel with their shopping

ski lifts are less than 2 minute walk from sport hotel
slopes are not crowded beginners runs are spectacular
ski equipment and rentals are good value for money
service is fast and efficient with options of storing equiment at slopes instead of at hotels.

instructors are friendly and flexible about changing up and down lvels as week goes on. great classes for little kids . who learn trick skiing and realy show adult novices up.

we had such a good time, we were already planning next ttrip before we even left resort . we were determined to go back again

i spent seven days exploring different runs and still didnt cover all slopes and areas,

taxis from one resort to another are expensive so shop around
go out early make use of shuttle buses.

Family friendly, excellent skiing school (Top Ski School) and breathtaking scenes. We have been there two winters in a row and we are extremely satisfied. First time we were there we were absolute beginners and did a high end hotel. Second time we already knew how to move around and went for a more bjdget option. Strongly recommended

We've been coming to Ellmau every winter since February 2015. At first we were spending Christmas in the also lovely village of Niederau (some 25 minutes driving south west of Ellmau), and the February half term holiday in Ellmau. But we have come to love Ellmau so much, that from this winter we have been spending both our December and February winter holidays in Ellmau. Ellmau is a beautiful Austrian village, so typical of the Tirol area. But having seen much of this area of the Tirol from Fieberbrunn to the beautiful Wildschoenau area, we have been slowly falling in love with Ellmau. The setting is simply breathtaking with the Wilder Kaiser mountains right behind the village. The village is so pretty that it just makes us feel good every time we are there. No wonder it has been the film set for so many movies and documentaries. The skiing in SkiWelt is second to none, with hundreds of kilometres of wide pistes that just run and run. And finally the people: everyone in Ellmau makes us feel like family. And that just beats everything else. Although we have been back in England now for a week, our hearts are still in Ellmau.

What better than the whole area home run challenge?

You will NOT (I have never in 45 years) find a better ski area, ever!

A whole day blast from Ellmau to Brixen home run, up to Westendorf and their home run to the village, back up to the top again and another home run back to Brixen. Gondola up to Hoch Brixen and bast down to Hopfgarten, gondola up and down to Itter then over to Soll home runs. A mountain traverse back to Scheffau and that home run followed by the Down Hill blast home run to Ellmau and loads of 🍻to end it! Loads!

Enjoy.

I suggest a very quick lunch at Soll?

Ellmau is linked to the Ski-Welt which is a very large ski area, linked to various other villages such as Soll and Westendorf. Despite it's reputation for being a litlle undemanding for more experienced skiers, I personally think it caters pretty well for everyone. It is also (for a ski resort) amazingly good value for money. The slopes are superbly well maintained, and there is ample snow making to ensure there is always pleny of snow. We have been to the ski-welt region 3 years in a row now, and there has always been plent of snow. Ellmau is a lovely village and is a tremendous base for your skiing holiday, particularly families

I've been skiing for 25 years, places I've been to are France, USA and Switzerland. My wife suggested this resort in Austria last year as its not far from us so it was the first time for me to ski in Austria. The hotel we stayed in was excellent value for money; 664 Euros for 7 nights with ski pass, breakfast, early evening coffee and cake, and evening meal. You can get cheaper places if you don't want the hotel luxary. The ski area is not massive but big enough for a week although I didn't ski the whole week as the weather was not so good for the time we were there. Prices in the restuarants in Ellmau are comparable to normal restuarant prices in Germany i.e. not expensive. Ski school and ski rental is cheap compared to France and Switzerland. I would recommend visit this place at least once to see what I mean. I've just booked another holiday there in 2013.

You need to catch the railway up to the skiwelt area. Good choice of blue and red runs and alpine restaurants.
