About
High above, in 3.029 metres above sea level and directly at the border to the Hohe Tauern National Park, you can feel alpine nature with all your senses. An alpine experience, which is usually reserved for experienced alpinists on their mountain tours, turns into a leisurely excursion at the Kitzsteinhorn in 3.000 metres above sea level. Reached easily with the comfortable cable cars, the Gipfelwelt 3000 is a popular excursion destination all year round. The view from the viewing platforms "Top of Salzburg“ and "National Park Gallery“ is marvellous. The glaciated peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park glisten in the sunshine and Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, peeks at eye level through the clouds. Austria's mightiest mountains are at your fingertips here. You can experience the glacier close up on a summerly slide in the Ice Arena below the peak.

Take the 3 cable cars up to the top for fab views. There is a small slope for sledging, sadly some people just hogged the sledges and despite kids waiting to use them would just keep going up and down and refuse to give up the sledges. There needed to be some management of this, forcing people to only go down once and then give the sledge to the next child in line and wait again for their turn.

From the top of the sledging slope you can walk up to the viewing finger platforms and then through a tunnel in the mountain to the highest viewing platform with restaurant. This is quite a walk at 3000m although not far. If you are unfit I'd suggest taking the big cable car which takes you to the restaurant and then walking down rather than up.

Amazing view when there's good weather - great photo opportunity. Does get quite cold up there so make sure you pack enough layers.
It's definitely a trek coming back up from the viewpoint so make sure you are prepared for this as it is hard work at this altitude especially in ski gear/boots.

Accessible via 3 cable cars and an inclined lift. Truly amazing views of snowy peaks in bright July sunshine from 2 viewing platforms. Good facilities including restaurant.

Its the best thing to see when you are in zell am see or kaprun. It's a must. We caught bus 660 from zell am see central bus station. It's every 30 mins. The distance is approx 40mins. Ask bus driver to drop u at kitzsteinhorn glacier bus stop. To reach till top, we have to change 3 cable cars. Pl buy tickets till top as it's worth going there. It takes approx. 1 hour to reach till top depending on how much u spend time at each stops of the cable car. Second cable car ride is awesome. It's open car and you will enjoy to the fullest. Take care of small kids in these ride. It's a must do thing if u visiting zell am see or kaprun.

This is an expensive thing to do, so go there in good weather conditions or you'll regret it. We paid 142 euro for 2 adults and 2 teens.
We were there early because we wanted to make a day of it and it really is no problem to spend a couple of hours on the top. Although the parking was crowdy, there were no waiting lines.
The cable car takes you to the top in 3 stages and then you have the possibility to take a funicular for the last 100m or so. There is a nice restaurant (not that big and yes ofcourse prices are higher than elsewhere), so if you want te eat there, be sure to take your seat early - last lunchtable was occupied at 11.30u am.
We took the walkway down into the mountain and came out at the edge of the mountain ridge, where there's a nice platform with a marvellous view of the Alpine mountains (you're at 3000m) but only if it's not blurred with clouds. Great photo ops! Next, you can hike down (over the ridge, it's safe!) to the playground in the snow to take a sleigh ride, and that's not only fun for children. After that you can walk back through the snow to the cable car station, throw some snowballs or have snack on the way (there was a foodtruck).
We spent about 4 or 5 hours on the mountain and were never bored, but if you just go up to see the view and then come back, it is a really expensive trip. But when you make the effort to see and explore everything, it's really worth it. Ofcourse, you have to come prepared!
When you hike, climb or descend you can totally feel that you're high up and the air is thin, so watch your pace and don't overdo it. Wear warm clothes or layers, it is really cold up there! Please wear sensible shoes, preferably firm hiking boots. We saw people in ballerina's or in normal shoes and that is not only stupid, it is just plain dangerous! Don't go into the mountains without proper boots! On another mountain we even saw children wearing flip flops.
Last of all, I must mention that Zell am See, Kaprun and also Kitzsteinhorn (Gipfelwelt 3000) is being flooded with Arabic tourists by the masses who have a great time in the snow but are also the ones without sensible outdoorwear, neither clothes nor shoes. They sometimes rent a skijacket from their travel company, but that's it.
Walking over the mountain ridge, on slippery and sharp rocks, trying to stay upright in snow, or sliding down a slope is dangerous when wearing groundlong burkas and flat shoes with leather soles - not only for them but they can endanger other visitors as well.

We used our Summer card to get free access to the summit via a Gondola ; Chairlift ; and cable car. (otherwise it is circa €42 return) The first Gondola is the scary straight up a cliff ride (if you don't like these sort of things).
There is nothing to do at the first 2 stops so just go straight to the top where you are rewarded with fantastic views and snow in early summer. there is a excellent viewing platform and do take the tunnel to learn more about the mountain (much colder) and to another viewing point which gives a different perspective.
Obviously you need a clear day to make it worthwhile but in my opinion I would recommend it for the best views in the area

Visited this place using the free Zell Am See - Kaprun Summer card. All the way to the top via different cable cars at no cost. A look around the viewing platform where there is a photopoint so you can press the button and have an official "selfie" taken and download later if wanted - again at no charge. Went into the restaurant where you can choose either self service or service sections. Cake and hot chocolate later and we're ready for the descent. Would definitely do this again.

We arrived early thinking we would beat the rush, however I’d failed to realise we had gone on a national holiday, and the place was busy at 8.30am. We parked with ease as car park attendants were in place. We joined the line for tickets, about a 5 minute wait, then onto the cable car, again about 5 min wait. Then off up the mountain. The trip up in 3 parts, as it’s to high for one single cable car, so a couple of changes are need on the way up. Each time you get off a cable car, you have to join another line to get the next one. Once you reach the top most cable car house, most people head to the ski slopes, the Gipfelwelt visitors take one more trip, this time on a short funicular railway to the viewing platform. Once there, you can go up and outside to see the spectator views. They have provided a camera, which you can activate a 3 second timer to take a photo of you and your party (this is then download from the website, free of charge) the views are stunning and well worth the trip up. The temperature at the top was -4 degrees and much lower with the wind chill factor, so take a hat and gloves. The building had good heating, so you can pop inside to warm up as needed. A restaurant is also available at the viewing platform, although we didn’t use it, so can’t comment on that. Make sure you take the walk down the “Tunnel” we didn’t know what this was, so decided to go and investigate, its was a pretty steep walk in places, along a man made tunnel, at the other end is another viewing platform on the other side of the mountain, with equally impressive views, it didn’t appear that many people knew about it (although it is signposted) as it was basically empty, with only a few people there, we had it to ourselves for the most part. The trip down was much easier, as the skiers were still amusing themselves, very few people were going down the mountain, so walked straight onto cable cars without waiting. The whole experience from parking until driving away was around 3 hours. I thought the €43 euro entry was well worth it. If you are in the Zell am see region, a really good place to see nature in all its glory.

We were skiing and decided to take a short break to head to the viewing point. It was a really clear and sunny day. Fantastic views from the platform. Was busy heading up but was very windy when we were there so viewing platform was pretty empty. There is a walk through the mountain to another viewing platform on the other side which was very windy again but the views were stunning!

We were uncertain about taking a break from skiing to visit this as the views all over the mountain are gorgeous but would recommend visiting!
