We were planning to stay overnight at the Berliner Hutte and hike to another hut for a total of 3 days hiking. Unfortunately the second hut closed early for the season due to power problems, and it rained all day two of the days we were in the Zillertal area. As a result we hiked from Alpengasthaus Breitlahner to Berliner Hutte as a day hike instead. Lovely hike (took us more like 2.5 hrs up, 2 hrs down - rather than 3hr up in all the material) through meadows, gorge, and along a powerful river the full way. The majority of the trail was a gravel road, only narrowing to a well maintained trail the last 30 minutes. 800 meters elevation gain. So many amazing waterfalls all around. The hut is the gem of the Austrian mountain hut system, with beautiful wood paneling, chandeliers, and a lovely terrace with a view of the snow topped mountains and glacier.

Wonderfull walk up to this Hutte along a beautiful mountain path through many wild flowers. The steep zigzag path makes sure you earn your coffee and cake - which I would certainly recommend! The portion sizes were huge!

From the Gasthof Breitlahner, take the wide trail alongside a gorge, winding up past cliffs and waterfalls through a veritable rock-garden of flowers. The hut takes about 3 hours to reach but is well worth the effort, set in a spectacular position below a ring of glaciers descending from 3000m peaks. Built in 1879, it is a large an imposing building, and even has chandeliers in the dining room.

Our family of four spent one night at Berliner Huette, as part of our Berlin High Trail Trek. It is a beautiful, historic lodge set in the Austrian Alps, with stunning views of a glacier and the snow covered mountains. It is easily accessed on foot by either the trail or a dirt road which winds out of the valley, accessed on foot (no transportation options). It is a large huette, with delicious food, comfortable lodging, clean bathrooms (showers on timers with tokens), and a helpful staff. It is a lodge for outdoor enthusiasts, climbers and hikers, due to its difficult access. Well worth a night's stay! They only accept EUROS- no credit cards!
