Went here by car. The trip going here from Mayrhofen is already very beautiful. The last piece of the road you need to pay toll (€14). Once you are there, you can easily park your car and walk around. There are also some hiking trials starting there. There are toilets and there is a small restaurant (not open on bad weather days). Also some other huts in hiking distance.

From the Schlegeis Dam, walk up an easy path to the Pfitsherjoch hut on the Italian border, surrounded by 3000m peaks. This route has been taken for centuries, since Stone Age Man cam here to hunt for ibex and look for rock crystal.

A very nice trail along the dam with lots of cows walking around 🙂 An absolute must is a visit to the activity center of #schlegeis131 at the edge of the dam to either climb the Via Ferrata up on the outside of the dam or fly over the dam on a zipline. So much fun and a real adrenaline kick for those with a little bit of respect for heights.
Also if you go in further into the valley you can see pictures of how the glacier there have melted step by step since the 1920’s. Sad but true.

Recommended only if you are willing to hike to destinations a little further away. Around an hour's hike, the area tends to be overused and offers little recreational value. Unfortunately, far too many individual vehicles block the undoubtedly beautiful surroundings. Profit (income from parking fees) takes precedence over recreational value or the richness of the natural experience.

Fantastic walk to the border through breathtaking scenery Walk starts flat with a bit of a climb towards the end which is well worth the effort Tip - make sure you fill your flask at the spring shown in the pic ( just before the main ascent ) Its ice cold and very refreshing

Very nice dam close to Glacier. The road from Mayerhofen leads thru nice valey and tunnels at the end of the road are magnificent. There are lots of things to do. Hiking, climbing the dam's wall, go to inside of the dam.

Gigantic dam with large reservoir in wonderful nature. Unfortunately, only relatively little water was dammed.

We drove to Schlegeis Stausee from Innsbruck. The way to the destination is very scenic. We have to stop at a traffic light and pay a toll. The toll road is one directional and we have to wait for our turn. As we drive towards the lake, we can slowly see the high wall of the arch dam. We have to drive through an unlined tunnel. The lake is blue in colour and it is fantastically beautiful with the mountains at the backdrop and the arch dam on the left side. We can take a stroll beside the lake to enjoy the beauty of the lake at different angles. There are benches along the way for you to relax and slowly mesmerize yourself into this natural beauty. This is a dead end road and we have to reverse to leave this place. There is Via Ferrata activity on the dam and it is claimed to be the highest Ferrata on dam in the world. We can also walk on the arch dam. There are restaurants and we can have a nice view of the lake while having our food. The food here surprisingly is not that expensive. This place is definitely beautiful and we should try our best to drop by.

Ciao, io soffro di vertigini anche quando guido, mi chiedevo se la strada è ben protetta e soprattutto se i tornanti sono a strapiombo.
Grazie Andrea
