One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. Whooshing waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier!

Ridiculously expensive (that's why it gets only 4 stars) but definitely worth while. Absolutely one of the most beautiful roads I've ever seen

This was well worth the toll, even on a dodgy weather day. We were travelling from Salzburg to Cortina anyway so it made sense to simply pay a bit extra and enjoy the mountain road. The weather was very bad as we started, and we...More

This is one of the best experiences we've had in our two-week trip to Austria, even the two small kids enjoyed it a lot. The road is narrow and has many curves, which make it an interesting ride, plus, there are many nice stops along...More

Staying in nearby Wagrain meant it was easy to reach. We did a route that meant we returned the same way but could easily have done a full loop. Expensive but worth it for the driving experience, views of glaciers and stunning landscapes. Next time...More

Event on a moderate day regarding weather, this road is worth a try. Quite easy to drive with a lot of parking areas allowing to stop and enjoy the views. Don't miss the so called "Biker Point" stop that is the highest point of the...More

First drove up this road in 2007 (from Bruck). There was much snow - in July! The weather up at the Pasterze Glacier was clear, including the view of the summit, which was spectacular. It was a slightly different experience this time (July 2017). Weather...More

Wonderful day. High Alpine Road was easy to drive, not overcrowded, plenty of easy parking, well marked roads, brilliant exhibitions and a fabulous map, marking short nature trails to walk on, plants to see, mountain geography to understand, animal life to see. Loved it. Saw...More

It was a hard route to cycle with a tandem bike, but we've made it. Every cyclist should try it, it's as oustanding as Alps can be.

Impressive Alpine road for real driving funs. Road is in perfect condition, no limitations regarding speed. Only and most important issue is to take care for yourself and other people on the road and respect everybody since not all of them are there for fast...More

There may be a tour bus, but cannot image that there is public transport. We strongly advise that you rent a car in Salzburg, then you can really enjoy the mountain roads.
