About
One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. Whooshing waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier!

Scenic drive to the highest peak of the Eastern Alps
Grossglockner High Alpine road is one of the best scenic drive in the Alps. There are 2 ways to access it each offering day pass for multiple entry through out the day which costs about 35-40 Euro (May, 2023). Accessing from north via Fusch is more popular with gas station and supplies available at Fusch. You drive via highway 311 passing scenic places by lake Zeel such as Zell Am See and Krupen. Other option is via Hellengbut from South. Make sure to have enough gas in tank or charge for an EV car since you'll be driving up pretty steep roads with numerous hairpin turns. There are few EV charging station in 2-3 locations across the road. Highest point on the road is on Edelweiss Speitze (8400 ft.) with a nice restaurant and a 360 view observation deck with free parking. The ultimate view is at Kaiser Franz Joseph highway viewpoint with a free parking deck, observation point and lift to the glacier. The lift maybe closed during off season. The viewpoint provide scenic photo ops for Grossglockner ( highest peak of Eastern Alps 12400 ft) and the adjacent glacier as well as trails for hiking.

Great mountain view accessible with a car
The highest Austrian car passage is a wonderful one day trip when you are in surrounding. The road is fantastic with lots of stops for views. Be careful not to go when there are thick clouds. Because of the height the road is in the clouds and you will only see a few meters. For the trip take a few hours as to have time to enjoy.

    A twisty scenic road, FAB!
We drove the Grossglockner alpine road from the Zell Em see side. Make sure you pick up a map as there is lots of info. Its a great scenic road to drive. Take your time and take it slow. Superb views are all around.

If you like scenic drives, do not miss the Grossglockner highway.
This was in the top three of scenic drives I've ever done. It was spectacular, thrilling, and also accessible with a lot of well designed vantage points and roadside attractions, including the visitors center at the Glacier. What is even more amazing are the cyclists climbing this steep highway, and the motorcycles passing you while racing through the hairpin turns.

Stunning ride with so many different mountains to see and lots of things to do
This was a highlight on our trip to Austria. The trip was amazing going up from 1000 m above sea to 2500 then down a bit and up. We made a few stops at the exhibition where the nature one had a great film showing the animals on the mountain. Our best stop was at a waterfall where we walked a bit and my teenage sun built dams with rocks. Water is facinsting. Ended at the Gletcher and took the lift down but could only stay for a short while as it closed. Ended seeing marmots and a chamois as well. Drove the full road in back and spend a full day there. Rookie mistake - ensure to have enough fuel. You spend so much more fuel driving up and down so had to detour for fuel but ended being lucky as we had a great lunch in a small village.

The roads are well-maintained thus the entrance fee is worth it. Mountain landscape is breathtaking and heavenly. One can make short stops spontaneously for clicking or snacks. Restaurants are in major hot spots. No boring moment because the weather was glorious: sunny and blue skies. It would have been otherwise had it rain. Serpentine roads. Water falls upon reaching the the top of Grosglockner !

Breathtaking is the only words that can be used to describe this pass. On my husbands to do list for several years he wasn't disappointed. The road is easy to drive, despite the hairpin bends and there are several stopping and sightseeing points along the way. Bear in mind that whilst better to start the journey really early to avoid the crowds, few cafes open before 9am. A must is the detour to Edelweiss Spitz and Kaiser Franz-Josefs- Hohe where you can look down on the Pasterze glacier. Awesome. We went there and back in one day, an easy do, but much busier later in the day. However, the driving standards on this pass compared to other 'famous' passes was excellent.

Very popular road, especially for motor cyclists. A lot of stopping areas. Worthwhile doing but pick a good day. If there is a lot of low cloud cover or mist, it covers the view and leaves the ride pointless. In winter the road is closed. Cafe about the 2400m mark.

This was an event that I had planned to do for a long time. Something always prevented it until now, things like bad weather, being too far away in Austria, etc. This was a stunning and fun drive, something I will always remember. Do not miss this one.

Beautiful vistas, unforgettable views of the native alpine plants, majestic mountains, and the view of the glacier - my first. The road is well traveled (weekend), so you share the road with fit bikers, bikers who gave up and walk their bikes, motorcycles, pedestrians, campers and passenger cars. The many curves of the road keep the driver busy. You cannot take your eyes from the road. The breaks "smoke" - no kidding. I wish we could stay longer and hike a bit, which other guests planned to do. We did not visit any other amenities while there, just went to the top and left, but I will remember these view for a long time. While planing the visit, please know that this is a destination and book hotel in advance.

A must do when visiting Austria. The scenery and views simply breathtaking. One can find some restaurants and souvenir shops along the road. When heading to the top you might meet some beavers, so take a snack and they will come up close and eat from your hands, very friendly :) We had a great time with the most beautiful views.

Truly excellent scenic drive through a portion of the Austrian Alps, an Austrian national park. Beats anything in the U.S. Took us nearly 8 hours to travel from end to end, pulling off for one view better than the next. However, you could do it in a couple of hours if you head straight to the top. Lots of small hikes to waterfalls. Be prepared for winding roads with switchbacks.
Get to the park early, and take a picnic lunch. Plenty of picnic benches with great views. We had agood lunch at the very top (end) of the trail, but it was expensive.
The road is a magnet for motorcyclists. IF you go by car, you will have to contend with them speeding by you at ANY point on the road. You will never be able to go fast enough so don't try. Take your time and enjoy the sights.

Its a privilage to drive over one of the most scenic road pass in Europe! The road is easy to drive with lots of options to stop for breathtaking views and photo oportunities. The road goes through a short tunnel on the top. Drive from Lienz is more picturesque as you have option to visit the sub road going to big parking garage and viewing platform in fromt of the mighty Grossglockner. Parking is free - but you have to pay the road toll. Just make it sure to find a sunny day!
