This scenic route was wonderful but I was not prepared for the sight of Mt Rushmore through two of its tunnels! Wonderful experience!

This is a great engineering feat - multiple switchbacks, pigtail bridges, single lane tunnels - great scenery and wildlife along the way. Watch out during high traffic season in the summer as traffic build up can be too much to allow an enjoyable drive. Careful...More

We drove Iron Mountain Road (Hwy 16A) and got some great views of Mount Rushmore and surrounding areas. You can see Mount Rushmore perfectly framed from two tunnels and from a couple of look outs. This is a classic scenic drive and should not be...More

Had fun today with all the curves doing Iron Mountain Road. Lost of places to pull off and cool tunnels to go through.

This was one of the major highlights during my visit to South Dakota. I strongly encourage you to take this drive. It is absolutely spectacular. Iron Mountain Road is part of a highway trilogy—along with Custer State Park’s Wildlife Loop and the Needles Highway. The...More

Well worth the drive for the beautiful overlooks. One-lane tunnels are beautiful. Switchbacks are unbelievable. So interesting.

My favourite of the three scenic roads in the Custer State Park. You get to see Mount Rushmore in the distance, often framed by tunnels, and overlooks.

A lovely scenic drive with dramatic scenery, be sure to drive it towards Rushmore in the morning (sun behind you), approach tunnels slowly, you will get a lovely photo opportunity looking through the tunnels (the second is even better than the first), can't really say...More

Great views and framing of Mt. Rushmore in the tunnels. Saw deer, turkey, and marmots. No bison on this road, though.

It takes about an hour to drive this 17-mile road, so bring some snacks and take a bathroom break before you head out. There's a great place to stop for pictures and just to look around towards the top of the hill... It's... More

Hello, We are leaving Sioux Falls, SD in the morning around 10:00 and would like to make it to either Rapid City or Spearfish, SD that evening. Will we have a chance to drive the Iron Mount Rd before dusk? Looking at Google Maps, I see from Sioux Falls, SD we'd 1. Take I-90 W to Box Elder. Take exit 61 from I-90 W. 2. Continue on SD-79 S. Drive to SD-36 W in East Custer. 3. Then we take US-16A E and head northwest. This is give us the correct direction to see Mount Rushmore, right??? And now more questions... 1. Assuming several stops for pictures on the Iron Mountain Road should we head for Rapid City or Spearfish? 2. Is this a reasonable one day trip? According to Google Maps, we'd get to the Iron Mountain Road about 6 hours after leaving Sioux Falls, SD which would be about 4 PM. Is that enough time to drive the Iron Mountain Rd? How long is the drive on the Iron Mountain Road? Thanks to all!

You can do either location. But Rapid City would give you more time in the area. Hello and the Badlands and Black Hills are great to see. On my third trip last year about this time of year, we stayed for two weeks and... More
