Jewel Cave National Monument is home to one of the longest caves in the world. Offering an assortment of cave formations and recreational opportunities, many visitors are truly amazed by this underground wilderness. Most impressive is the fact that exploration and discovery continue to take place at this significant natural resource.

As part of the National Park Service, the monument offers four different types of cave experiences: Scenic Tour (1 hour and 20 minutes), Discovery Talk (20 minutes) Historic Lantern Tour (1 hour and 45 minutes), and Wild Caving Tour (3 to 4 hours). During the spring months, limited tour options are available. It is recommended that visitors check online for specific tour times or call the visitor center directly for park ranger assistance.

NOTE: At present, advanced reservations for cave tour tickets are not available in 2016. It is hoped that this service will be available by Memorial Day Weekend; however, until further notice, all cave tour tickets are being sold on a first come first serve basis.

We arrived in time to catch the noon tour and our Ranger did a great job describing the cave's highlights and history. It was beautiful, safe and very interesting.

You rarely get to experience a cave like this, regardless of where you live. The depth and breadth were significant and the guides were great! Lots to learn here but book your trip early! We made this our first stop at 8 to get the time slot we wanted and then went back after Custer and Rushmore. Made for a... More

If you have time to do one of the tours here it is NOT to be missed! Fascinating and awesome! We took our kiddos - ages 7, 9, and 11... we all loved it!

The scenic tour is a widely popular tour here in the Black Hills. Its a perfect activity on a rainy day. More

We were driving back to Colorado from Keystone and decided to take a detour to take a look at the Jewel Cave National Monument. This was a spur of the moment thing but luckily we were able to get tickets for the scenic tour and only had to wait 45 minutes. The only downside was our lack of suitable clothing... More

Loved Jewel Cave. We liked it better than wind cave because there was more to see of the different formations in Jewel Cave than in Wind Cave but do both if you have the time. Got first thing in the morning because by the time we got out, there were lines for the rest of the showings.

Happy you had a good time here at Jewel and at our sister Park Wind Cave. Its fairly impressive how different our two caves are given we are two of the longer caves in the world and are so close together. More

Highly recommend the "middle" tour. was perfect for smaller kids and took about 1.5 hours down into the cave. Definitely worth a stop!

Glad you enjoyed your visit. The scenic tour is great for children (though keep in mind there is an age restriction. Children 5 and under are limited to the Discovery Talk). More

All the cave tours were sold out and we were unable to become a JR Ranger because we didn't get to take the cave tour. We finished the packet and didn't get a JR Ranger badge.

Unfortunately cave tours do frequently fill up fast and we recommend that visitors arrive earlier in the day to ensure that they are able to get on a tour. Our popularity speaks volumes to what a great cave there is. As far has obtaining a Jr. Ranger Badge, going on a tour is not a requirement. Other options are to... More

Great wonderful do not miss. We did scenic tour. Arrived early and got second tour of the day. It is a lot of walking if you have any mobility issues but it was perfect. Cool in the caves so bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. They do have trails and a information area with things to do while waiting. Enjoyed... More

The cave is a spectacular sight indeed. And yes we do encourage people to wear a light coat for the temperature inside is always 49 degrees F (9C), we do suggest that folks arrive earlier rather than later because tours can fill up fast. More

We took the Discovery Tour which was 20 minutes long and has not steps unless you choose to go to the lower observation area. The wife could not handle the 734 steps on the main tour so we took the Discovery Tour. It's 49 degrees in the cave so be prepared. The color is excellent in the walls and the... More

We tried to visit the caves during a cold and misty spell in August and were frustrated beyond belief at the primitive logistical systems employed by the National Forest Service. The rangers could not take reservations by phone. The web site did not allow for reservations by Internet. This meant we were forced to drive half an hour to get... More

Well Cherry, a few things. First of all, Jewel Cave is a National Monument which is run by the National Park Service not the Forest Service. Second, we used to have a reservation system in place but found many visitors would not show up in time time for their tour and it would leave without them forcing us to refund... More
