Fun experience. Staff was friendly and helpful .
We did 1/2 day rental, which was plenty for us. Saw some great panoramic views, wildlife, lots of varieties of wildflowers along the way.
Tips: You are going to get dusty and dirty, so dress appropriately.
I'd recommend glasses or goggles and a bandana or dust mask of dome sort to keep the dust out of your eyes, nose and mouth.
The unit we drove (Polaris Razor 2-seater) was very loud. Don't expect to carry on casual conversation unless you are parked with the vehicle off. I will wear ear plugs next time I do this.
A blanket and picnic supplies would be a cool way to go too.

We did an 8 hour rental and had a blast. We were able to fill out the wavier and do all the paperwork before we arrived. Once we arrived they were prompt to check us in and tell us about the local area and get us started on our day. They show you how the navigation works and how to use the three pins they have plotted to get out past all the private property and then go over numerous different things you can stop and see as well as places to eat. We saw the old gold mine and silica mine as well as numerous other things. We rode up to Hill City on the trails and ate then came back on the Needles Highway through Custer Park. Remember to bring your park pass if you already bought in for your car or they’ll make you buy another one. We had a great time and the people we worked with during reservations and picking up were very professional and informative. We’d love to be able to spend another day out in the trail area of the Black Hills and watch the leaves continue to change color.

Best rental ever and the people working there are super nice. The ONLY place in town that won’t waste your time making you wash the ATV afterwards. You bring them back dirty and full of gas and that is it. We drove by a line at the the local car wash of ATVs that had been rented elsewhere. The ATVs we rented, 2 four seaters for our family of 6, were study and each had a nice long wheel base. The seats were very comfortable and the suspension on the Razor ATVs are great and the ride wasn’t a back breaking, jarring ride even though we went over lots of big rocks and bumpy dirt roads. They provide a tablet for each ATV that has preloaded maps with many points of interest on it. The tablet tracks where you have been so you can’t get lost. Super awesome! We did a full day. So worth it!

Our experience started months prior when we planned the trip. The owner graciously answered a couple questions related to 1/2 vs whole day, and seeing animals more effectively at Custer vs Hill City locations. Opted for the whole day out of Custer, and glad we did!
Fast forward to today. Received our training and overview, during which, one set of words from the owner stood out, " don't be afraid to just go, get lost, and enjoy; use the map when you need to confirm a turn or on your way back using breadcrumbs. Excellent advice!
The trails in this area are simply amazing; some challenging, others allowed for speed. Saw cattle, deer, Canadian geese, chipmunks, and loads of butterflies!
Visited the Fire Outpost for a scenic outlook, then the silica mines, and finally the lake.
Thanks to the entire Adventure Rentals team for helping create an awesome day!

After a bad experience at a different outfit, we ran into this place as we were walking down the street in Custer.
Holly was quick to answer our initial inquiry and we were SO immediately compelled by her honesty and enthusiasm, that even after having "lost" a $300, 4 hour rental fee at that previous place, we decided to do it again, but this time with Adventure Rentals and Holly's service.
The unit was awesome (Polaris RZR XP1000 4 seater), outfitted with a very helpful, functional and easy to use tablet with detailed trail maps and "gps" locator (not turn by turn, but locator tracking which was perfect).
Our family had a BLAST and we will NO DOUBT return to rent from Adventure Rental in the future.

My husband and I had a blast renting a UTV and "getting lost" in the trails of the Black Hills National Forest. The tablet for the maps of the trails was easy to use and follow. Definitely recommend the full day rental if you want to do more exploring and not feel rushed to get the vehicle back on time. We packed a small cooler with sandwiches and large jugs of water. It was hot this day! We will definitely do this again!

On our trip out West to the Black Hills area we had seen various 1,2,and 4 seater UTVs zipping all around. It caught the fancy of my teen so on a spare day we booked one at short notice.
I can't say enough about the friendly, helpful staff. They made sure we were comfortable with the RZR, the mapping tablet, some trails to try. We went for the extra $15 coverage for all tires and belts, having read horror stories from other rental locations (not RA).
One of the owners checked us out and back in, and was proud to say that their equipment is brand new each season. It definitely felt that way. Immaculate buildings, and equipment. Definitely on the list if we head back this way on other trips.

Without a doubt, Alex and Holly are running a 5 star operation! We were looking for a UTV rental on our vacation, and with some research came across Adventure Rentals. It was clear that they operated a fleet of current and clean machines, and the best part is the tablets that come on each machine full of the area maps.
As soon as we arrived, we felt right at home! Holly was quick to explain the different trail systems, and point out some interesting spots to shoot for. Alex gave a quick run down of operating the Polaris RZR, that would be easy enough even if you've never driven one!
During our 8 hour rental, we were barely able to scratch the surface of the 600 miles of trails and 3,600 miles of roads spanning the 1.2 million acre Black Hills National Forest. We will certainly be back in the near future to see more of the incredible views. Don't think twice, there is no better way to experience the Black Hills!
P.S. Guys: Holly also has a little boutique at the location, that your significant other will inevitably love. Mine certainly did!

We rented the UTV for 8 hours and the time goes so fast that 4 hours is not enough. We were novices in both off road although our driver had some experience. As said before pay close attention to the instructions concerning the routes. It took us some time to become comfortable with the gps and how to navigate. It had rained the night before so even though we did not take the harder trails we were able to get very muddy. We had a 4 person machine and the second seat was very tight. We did like that we were not required to take the. UTV to the car wash as required by other companies. Returning to the company was fast and easy. Very friendly staff. I recommend

are there places along the way to stop and eat? Stores, ect... or is it wise to pack lunches and drinks.

You can drive the ATVs anywhere, even through town, so you could stop at a restaurant. We stopped halfway at a tiny restaurant up in the hills along our route to fuel up our vehicles and a couple of the kids wanted some food there. We got it to go and we also had packed a cooler so we had snacks and water and additional food with us as well, that way we could stop at a shady picnic stop by the lake and eat. They loaned us bungee cords to strap our cooler down in the back of the ATV.

Is there an age requirement to ride in a UTV with adult?

Driver must be licensed. They have helmets for younger passengers. My co-rider was 14.
You can call them if you have someone really young. If you have your own helmet that might help, as anyone younger than 18 requires a helmet to ride.
They are super helpful, if you have any question about someone super young I'd give them a call and ask what equipment they have.
Enjoy!

We plan on vacationing in late May/early June. We have two dogs. We were wondering if dogs are allowed in the ATV's? We're older, and won't be doing too much crazy driving!
Thank you!

Coming for the 2020 Black Hills Rally. We've been several times and are looking for new experiences! I've ridden the Custer loop many times on asphalt, but am wondering how the "trails" are? We'd love to get off the beaten path and do some exploring! Any comments on the trail riding would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey Jason! Thank you for reaching out. We sit at the base of 4,000 miles of trails. You most definitely can get off the beaten path and do lots of exploring and see things you can't see from the highway. We would love to help you get out on those trails and explore. The trails can be anything from nice leisure riding to more rocky hill climbs....to anything in between, there are beautiful outlooks and vistas you can see along the way, we help you guide a little, but our adventures are a self-guided adventure. All of our machines have tablets in them, with the Avenza App downloaded on them, this gives you access to all the trail maps at your fingertips and this helps you know where you are at and where you might want to go. We drop pins in there for you, this gives you that little bit of guiding help along the way. With 4,000 miles of off-roading trails there is a lot to explore and so much to do out there!!! Please give us a call 605-673-4540 if you have any other questions! We are always happy to help.
