We always visit Sylvan Lake when we come to the Black Hills. Behind the lake there is hiking and some spectacular scenery. Hiking behind the Lake is not for the disabled & can be strenuous but beautifully rugged. Kids loved climbing on the rocks. You can rent kayaks or pedal boats for the lake. Parking lot fills up mid day and... More

It rained a couple of the days we were staying in Hill City and we didn't think we were going to be able to make it Sylvan Lake. It finally stopped raining one afternoon and we decided to take the opportunity to head over. I'm so glad we were able to see the lake, it is breathtaking! We did the... More

After visiting the Tetons it was a delightful afternoon spent looking at a slightly smaller but equally attractive vista.

Visited Sylvan Lake before our hike to the Harney Peak trailhead. Very beautiful. National Treasure: Book of Secrets was filmed here!

We took the hike around Sylvan Lake which is pretty family friendly and loved the gorgeous scenery. The kids (ages 13, 11, and 8) loved climbing on the rocks and getting higher views. I definitely recommend making this stop to stretch your legs. We even grabbed some lunch at the camp store which was okay for a light bite.

The lake is not big but great for a 30-60 minute kayak trip or walk around its perimeter. We arrived around 9:30am and found few people around. By the time we finished our kayaking just after 11, the parking lot was packed so we would recommend an early morning visit to avoid the crowds.

We visited the beginning of October and stayed at Sylvan Lake Lodge. What a beautiful lake and walk around the lake, very photogenic. The lodge was beautiful, especially the great room where everyone gathers for sitting by the fire, reading, doing a puzzle, meeting new people or having a cocktail. The rooms are small and rustic, but the surroundings are... More

We were enjoying the Custer Sate Park tour and chose to stop here for lunch. The setting for the lodge was pretty, if you ate outside you had a view but not so if you ate inside in the dining room. Our service was good and the food was tasty but rather pricey.

We used Sylvan lake as a jumping off point for a hike to Harney peak. It was visually stunning - worth the effort to see. We snapped pics, walked around, basked in the fall sunshine - loved every minute of it. Upon descending from Harney, three of our bravest souls opted for an icy October dip in the lake. Definitely...
