My husband surprised me with this balloon ride. I was nervous and excited, not knowing what to expect. We arrived a few minutes before 5 am and were greeted by very nice, you could even say comical staff members. We were loaded in vans and taken to the flight field, where we watched the staff unload and set up the balloons. Our pilot, Mike informed all passengers of do's and don'ts before allowing us to enter the balloon. We had an amazing flight with unimaginable views. Mike had a wonderful sense of humor and was willing to answer questions from everyone in the balloon. We landed in a field with tall wet grass and the staff came out to retrieve/push the balloon to a better unloading site a short distance away. The poor staff were wet from the waist down but were very happy to do it for us. I can't say enough about this group of people and the experience. I highly recommend everyone to use this group to mark a hot air balloon ride off your bucket list.

Being later in the season we didn't have to meet quite so early (our meet time was 6:30am) but was so worth it. The pilots and crew were very professional and I always felt that safety came first, even if weather dictated we couldn't go as high or as far as I would've liked. Still an amazing experience I would recommend to anyone. The basket was smaller than I imagined so it is a tight squeeze. I thought it might be colder up there but the fire above your head keeps you toasty. I sometimes have issues with heights so I was a little nervous how it would affect me, but there was never a moment of panic. A very peaceful ride!

This experience was more than we expected! The staff and crew were friendly, sometimes humorous, and very professional. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most people including my wife and myself. We wouldn't hesitate to book this excursion again. We still talk about it!

I can't say enough about our balloon ride. Our balloon pilot, Mike was wonderful. His knowledge and sense of humor made the experience one of our favorites. Love the champagne and snacks at the end of our flight! 5+ Stars!!!

My wife booked this trip a week in advance for me, her, and three children. We were told to arrive at 5:30 a.m. across the street from our hotel. The tour operator called my wife's cell phone the night before to confirm the time (5:30 a.m.) and place (across the street from our hotel) for our meeting.

The following morning was absolutely gorgeous. 70 degrees. Not a cloud in the sky. The nearby flags showed the most gentle of breezes, and certainly no wind. We woke our girls up very early to get dressed, eat a bite of breakfast, and get to the pick-up point. Our kids were very excited albeit somewhat tired from their unusually early wake-up call.

The operator was nowhere to be found. He never called my wife's cell phone (despite having the number and having called it the previous night).

We called the operator. He didn't pick up at first. We called again. He picked up. He sounded like we had woken him up. When we asked where he was, he told us that the pick-up time was 5:15 a.m., that he arrived and met with the other so-called family who was booked, but the weather wasn't suitable for ballooning and he cancelled the flight. He didn't offer any explanation for why he didn't call us, why he twice told us to be there at 5:30 a.m., or why the weather wasn't suitable given how perfect a day it was. Nor did he provide us with the name or contact information for the other "family" to confirm that what he was telling us was true.

He asked to reschedule. I told him that we had lost confidence in him, and that I wasn't going to ruin another vacation day dealing with him and that he needed to refund the charge on my credit card. He said he would refund us our deposit. But as of this date, he has not refunded the charge, requiring me to dispute the charge with my card-provider.

A few days later, a different tour operator in Deadwood, SD asked us how our trip to the Black Hills had been. We told her that everything was great, although we had a terrible experience with another tour operator. Without being prompted or coached, the other operator asked, "Was it the balloon guy in Custer?" We were shocked that she had heard similar stories like ours from other tourists. Obviously, this operator's reputation for doing this type of thing preceeds him.

When we arrived home, I looked again at his TripAdvisor reviews because I've never had a bad experience with a tour operator who received favorable reviews like those that appear for this operator on this website. My wife pointed out that the last review posted was September 26, 2011, and that there are no recent reviews. Perhaps I should have taken the absence of reviews as a sign that I should have avoided using this operator.

Needless to say, we cannot recommend this tour operator to anyone.

I am sure the pilot and ride is great, However, the man who Is the owner/manager is hard to work with. I got up at 3:30 am to make the drive into Custer. I allowed time to drive slowly due to the curving and hilly roads. Also, here was a lot of wildlife to avoid. There was flashes of lightening in the far distance that concerned me. However, I assumed I would be called if the ride was to be canceled. When I arrived at the meeting place there were three other couples there. This was about 5:10 am. I called the owner who responded as if I was crazy for asking if the flight was on. I asked him why he didn't inform us and he said, "I can't get up at 2:00 am to make phone calls." When I said I'd like my money back he slammed the phone down on me. It took him a week to remove the credit card charge from my account. I had to call the credit card company and tell them I would file a complaint if he processed it. Skip the headache and take the helicopter rides.

Hello Bernadette. It must seem like a late response on this forum! Anyways, Black Hills Balloons is under new ownership this year and I can assure you this kind of customer service will not exist in our world. If you are ever in the Hills again please keep us in mind as it is truly one of the most spectacular places in the world to fly. Thank you

First of all, it wasn't my first time on a hot air balloon. The excursion starts at 5-15am in Custer, SD at the meeting point. That means, if you are staying in Rapid City (as we were) you have to wake up at 3-45am to get there on time. They're trying to catch the calmest time of the day, that's why they do it that early. It was a little challenging for us, but doable. Especially when you expect a nice scenic flight over the gorgeous Black Hills. After we had met with the pilots, we hopped into their van and were brought to a field near Stockade lake (about 10 min. drive from Custer). The weather was calm. I must say, that the crew seemed very professional and got the balloons up and running very fast. Our pilot, Damien, was very friendly and nice guy as well. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment for me was the flight itself. Instead of a scenic flight through the Black Hills, we ascended to an altitude of about 1000 feet (yes, you get gorgeous views of surroundings, but you can get comparable views from many lookout spots in Black Hills), and then basically stayed in the same area for the next 45-50min. The whole excursion was within roughly 1 mile radius from the departure spot. Maybe the winds were not cooperative that day, but again, it was very calm and from what I can see from the other people's pictures, it's pretty much their routine to stay around Stockade area lake. So don't expect flying for miles over the peaks, lakes and cliffs. Upon landing, we were served mimosas with crackers, cheese and muffins, which was nice. But I'd rather had a longer flight. So overall my kids (10 and 6 y.o.) enjoyed the experience since it was their first time, but I was not very satisfied. They definitely need to work on a better flight routs in different wind conditions, so that people can really enjoy the Black Hills.

Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We remember that flight well because Mother Nature just didn't cooperate. We were forced to stay in the area (when you are at the mercy of the winds, it happens sometimes) but she did provide views of the beautiful Custer Needles, which is very rare. The Black Hills can be unpredictable at times, but flying here is definitely worth it, we hope it made your stay here memorable.

We are Aussies and it was on our list of things to do - a hot air balloon trip somewhere in the US. We chose Black Hills Balloons and we're so glad we did. We had the pleasure of meeting Steve and his crew in late June 2009, we were collected at the designated pick up place and taken to a very beautiful spot, watched the unloading and inflation of the beautiful balloon and what a way to see the countryside. It was spectacular and ended too soon (due to encroaching bad weather). Steve is very good, knows his job and does it well and at the end we had the traditional champagne toast plus a history lesson as to why we drink champagne at the end of a balloon flight. If you want to know, you'll have to go fly with Steve. Onya Steve and thank you for the experience of a lifetime.

This was an awsome experience! Walter, our pilot, and Nate and Chumley, the assistants, were very fun, yet professional. It was the first time myself and my husband, and our traveling friends every went up (and came down) in a balloon. We got to scratch another item off of our bucket list! The view was gorgeous! We had no problem with finding the meeting place; the time of arrival was 6:30 a.m., and everyone was there about 15 minutes early. The landing was a bit out of the ordinary, in that, we actually had to land at the side of a road because the wind gave out. We got lots of waves and cameras were flashing at the site of us landing on the side of the road! I only wish that it had been longer (it was about an hour in the air). Highly recommend this activity!!!!

What a great day / location for a balloon adventure. Albeit a bit expensive ($295 per person) for the length of the flight, the views and the flight were stunning. The weather and wind cooperated and the landing was as soft as down!!

I would have enjoyed a "higher" ascension and a longer flight but for the first-timers in the group (everyone but me), the flight was fantastic.
