Neighborhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

We were wondering on our way to another shop, but were captivated by the artwork and jewelry in the windows of Sutton Galleries! Truth be told, we were taken by many high quality jewelry pieces and did not give the gallery its fair share of our time. Ryan, the salesperson, was fun and professional, and helped us narrow down our jewelry selection (It was hard to choose just one). We come to New Orleans annually so we will be back!

We dropped by Sutton Gallery because we had such a nice experience in another nearby Gallery. We love art, appreciate it, and there are many fine pieces on display, in addition to some stunning jewelry--both contemporary & antique pieces. I have to thank Mr.Sutton for his graciousness and time as he showed us some French artists whose work was totally transformed as he dimmed and raised the lights to show the true deftness of the artist's talent. When others, perhaps more well-heeled, started to enter the store, we let him go-- he does have a business to run. However, I appreciated his time, and he never talked down to us.

There is an old story about Carol Burnett, who went shopping and asked to try on some furs. The saleswoman did not recognize Carol, as she was dressed very casually. The saleswoman refused to let her try on the coats, telling her they were too expensive & she probably couldn't afford them. Carol Burnett subsequently bought the store & fired the saleswoman.

Rick Sutton likes anyone who really likes art. He treats all customers with respect because that is who he is, and he knows that you don't have to dress like a millionaire to have enough money to buy expensive things. I know my jewelry, and he has very fine pearls, Sardinian coral, Guillochet enamelwork, and colored precious stones. If I ever win the lottery, hopefully he will still have the beautiful antique earrings he showed me the day we were there. Thanks, Rick!

For years, we have been stopping into Sutton Galleries – going back to when we lived in New Orleans, in the 1970's. However, it had been quite a while, since we visited. I think my last visit was in about 2012, when I bought a little painting of an English Bulldog for my wife. This afternoon, we were “strolling” Royal St (with some minor detours around the French Quarter), and actually heading to Brennan’s for some wine. Though it was December, the day was only moderately cool, and clear, after a couple day’s worth of fog had finally lifted.

On a whim (wine was on our mind), we stopped in, to admire the work displayed. To the best of my knowledge, Sutton Galleries has always represented local artists, as well as many international ones too. We proceeded to spend the better part of an hour, just looking.

While we appreciated much, there was just nothing which “moved us.” That often happens. Unlike at some galleries, the agent at Sutton Galleries fully understood, and allowed us to just wander, though she was ready to answer the several questions that we had. Many years ago, at another French Quarter gallery, the agent would not leave our side, trying to convince us that each piece was a great “investment,” and never understood (or at least acknowledged) that some people buy art that “speaks to them,” and not everyone does so as an investment. I think that we got letters from that agent for about 10 years, telling of this, or that “about to be discovered” artist.

It was also very nice to receive a “thank you for stopping in,” though we walked out empty-handed. A very entertaining gallery, staffed by friendly professionals. As always, we will be returning. Who knows, maybe then a new Bulldog painting will await?

It was a very nice gallery. Lots of splendid art on display. It was clean and certainly the prices were pretty standard for the area.

This is one of my favorite galleries on Royal...the featured artist, Isabelle Dupuy, is a must see. I'm just sleepy I can't afford to take one of her paintings home with me.

Make no mistake this is a fine art gallery with all pieces being justifiably expensive. If you show an interest in the art or one of the many represented artists, a knowledgeable salesperson will give you a pleasant, but strong pitch on making the sale. Not for the casual browser.

I walked into this shop because I was captivated by the bright colors used in the artwork. Pictures could not be taken so it is hard to do justice by what I saw. The vividness of the colors was truly breathtaking. I asked about one set of pictures that intrigued me but could not justify the expense. Take note - no prices are on display and I would say the artwork might be too expensive for many. Take a stop though- it is worth the time.

As we were walking down Royal Street we saw this unique artwork in the window. I had to go in and see it closer. Once inside I realized that this gallery was filled with unique and fascinating artwork. I was especially taken by Isabelle Dupuy's work. The man at the gallery was very informative and friendly. I spent more time in the gallery than I realized, but it was truly worth the visit.

We had a great time walking around this gallery. The art was beautiful - each different yet still complementing the others. The colors were bold and vibrant which was very fitting for the area. Jean-Paul was engaging and available offering prices for each piece we showed interest in. Despite not currently being able to afford the works, we felt we not judged of this fact and enjoyed listening to any information Jean-Paul had to offer about the artist or artwork.
