About
A popular, prayerful pilgrimage site to a saintly favorite known as the "Cheerful Ascetic". This Redemptorist priest possessed great mystical gifts due to his intense prayer life. Many miracles are attributed to Father Seelos' intercession both during his life and after his death in the 1867 New Orleans yellow fever epidemic.

It's great to visit sites connected with holy men and women who have gone before us. The museum and shrine communicate well the life of Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos. Spent about an hour there. Make sure to visit the church and pray before his tomb.

Blessed Seelos has been credited with many miracles, but he officially needs one more to be declared a Saint by the Pope and officials in Rome. Blessed Seelos Shrine at St. Mary's Assumption Church is such a wonderful refuge for those seeking intercessory prayers for themselves, family and friends. I love the part of the church where there is a section where candles can be lit and glass cases filled with relics used by Blessed Seelos while he lived here. There are also other first class relics of other saints and lots of interesting historical markers and statues. You can even sit next to a bronze statue of Blessed Seelos on a bench and take a picture with him. The place is air conditioned and includes beautifully renovated, clean bathrooms. There is even a small room off of the main church that houses a Reliquary that holds bones of Blessed Seelos and some kneelers where you can pray for his intercessory prayers. They have boxes to place prayer requests and a book where prayer requests can be written. The people who work and pray here pray for everyone who leaves a prayer request. They collect them and pray over them and I believe they burn them afterwards and the prayers are sent up to Heaven. It is unbelievable to imagine that Blessed Seelos said masses in this very church a long time ago...you can actually feel his presence when sitting in the pews. It is breathtaking, calming, and a refuge for those seeking solace and peace. When in New Orleans, I recommend a visit there...it has a wonderful history and is a very spiritual place. Also, visit their gift shop where you can find wonderful gifts for friends and family. I always buy the third class relic crochet-edged pieces. They are wonderful to have. I always keep some on hand when people around me are in need of help, such as in the hospitals, going for surgery, facing illnesses or trials and tribulations. These can even be carried on a patient going to surgery because they contain no metal and has been touched to the bones of Blessed Seelos for protection. When you leave there, you feel as though you have left your worries and cares there and that all will be taken care of.

We enjoyed our visit to the shrine. First we saw a movie of Fr. Seelos' life & then visited the gift shop. The shrine was a tribute to the life of a man who left his family & country in the 1800's to come to the US & join the Redemptorist order to serve German immigrants as well as all those in need. He died 1 year after arriving in New Orleans to serve people suffering from yellow fever, having contracted the disease himself. His body is in a large reliquary & there is a huge bronze statue of him & also a statue of him on a bronze bench inclined toward the visitor with his arm extended in a loving, comforting manner. Attached is the church which is also beautiful & quite traditional. We felt the staff was friendly & welcoming. We bought his biography & are enjoying reading this. One of our group had visited previously & asked for healing-a prayer which was granted so this visit was special because it offered her the opportunity to thank Fr. Seelos for his intercession & thank God for healing.

The shrine of Blessed Seelos is one of the first placed we ever visited when we started going to New Orleans 13 years ago. It is the final resting place of Bl. Francis Xavier Seelos, a priest who lived in the 1800's and died of yellow fever. His remains are enshrined in the sacristy of St. Mary's Assumption Church. The museum which adjoins the shrine is filled with information regarding his holy life and the many miracles which people attribute to his healing powers. The Seelos Center also has displays and historical artifacts related to his life, the life of the people of New Orleans and the history of the City. It is a place worth visiting even if you aren't seeking his healing powers.

This shrine is in an old area south of Saint Charles Avenue. It is definitely worth your time to see. I recommend starting with the eight minute video to get an understanding of Father Seelos' history and work in the U. S. Then tour the small museum and then move on to the church. Be sure to ask that the lights in the church be turned on to view the spectacular altarpiece. A small gift shop is adjacent to the small museum. This is truly an amazing and thought provoking place to visit and spend a moment to pray and reflect.

My best friend suggested we visit Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos's shrine on my recent visit back home to New Orleans. I expected to learn about Fr. Seelos's life but I came away with an education on Yellow Fever also. We didn't get a chance to visit the church, since it was closed on the weekday we visited. You will enjoy the beautiful, peaceful setting and the exquisite sculptures in the surrounding garden. Don't miss the gift shop.

We were using the Hop On Hop Off bus during our stay in New Orleans and we wanted to see St. Mary's Assumption Church and the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos. This is within walking distance of Stop #11. The church is magnificent and we learned so much about Blessed Francis that we were not familiar with. There is a short film and a small museum and gift shop. We went on a Wednesday and would have liked to see St. Alphonsus Church nearby but it has limited hours so check before you go to see all three at the same time

This was my second time here. I brought 10 more friends who had not been here before. All of us were very pleased. We had called a week before we came & had a lovely, faith-filled lady, who was our guide. I learned a lot more from her than I had on my first trip! Bl. Fr. Seelos is an example for all of us who strive to be faithful disciples of Jesus. The movie, gift-shop, shrine & St. Mary's Assumption Church were incredible. We spent more than 2 hours here & enjoyed every moment of it. We left several prayer requests that we brought with us. If you are looking for peace, solace, & spiritual support, come here.

Visiting this shrine will give you a beautiful insight into the life of Blessed Father Francis Xavier Seelos. The small museum is very well done with a wonderful video that is very enlightening. There is usually someone at the shrine to pray with you to Father Seelos and answer any questions that you may have. St. Mary's Assumption Church is stunning, if you happen to be there when it is open, be sure to take a look... you may forget that you are in the United States and not in Europe. In addition, there is a lovely gift shop... be sure to stop by after you tour the museum.
