If you are visiting New Orleans, be sure to check out what's playing at the opera house. The venue is glorious, an historic Catholic church in the Marigny behind the French Quarter stripped down to its beautiful, graceful old bones. Besides a varied calendar, this place has some of the best acoustics I've ever experienced (former music journalist; I've heard A LOT of live music). You may have the chance to hear the most excellent New Orleans Chamber Players, see local or visiting jazz musicians, or perhaps luck into a production of a play or dance performance. The bookers and producers seem to have excellent taste because I've never seen anything here that doesn't meet very high standards. New Orleans is full of "hidden" surprises, and this is one of them. The atmosphere is quite casual and very welcoming. Visit the Marigny Opera House website calendar, see what's on, and treat yourself to a delightful experience.

A one-of-a-kind, magical place to experience some of the most delightful performance works happening in a city full of creativity. Dance works - from classical to conceptual. Music - from harpsichord to opera to gypsy jazz. Paul Taylor's dance company visits annually for a residency, there's Fringe Fest, Puppet Fest, Dance Fest, occasional art-house films, Mardi Gras and Christmas Balls...always something happening, and always richly creative.

The space is incredible - a deconsecrated church, gloriously distressed, with incredible sound qualities and beautiful site lines - a truly unique venue and perhaps the premier venue of its size in NOLA, it seats ~125-150, so it always feels fairly intimate and roomy at the same time). Tickets are inexpensive or "by donation", and many events are free to the public.

If you're visiting the city, check to see what's happening at Marigny Opera House while you're here. When you visit, feel free to jump into conversation with the manager & owner - he's always at events and always happy to chat.

Well worth the exploration to find this New Orleans treasure...

There was a mix of new jazz and contemporary compositions at Marigny Opera House
Sun. Dec. 29 | Violinist Alexandre Negrao, cellist Riclebio Souza and percussionist Jason Marsalis look back on the old and contemplate the new in a concert of “old classics, Brazilian treasures” and a new piece, “The Road Ahead,” by New Orleans composer Tucker Fuller.

Very good venue and music was lovely.

Wow, this place is amazing! We were just walking by and decided to go in just to look inside. Turns out that a local jazz quintet was going to be doing a live recording there later in the week. We ended up going an it was outstanding. The acoustics in the opera house are unbelievable (reason why a lot of jazz groups from New Orleans do live recordings there). We were able to see the Cyrus Nabipoor Quintet perform in this amazing place, as an audience and not in a bar setting. If you are traveling to New Orleans, check out the website of this place and see of anyone is performing. Absolutely worth it!!!

What a gem this venue is. What was once a catholic church, it has been reborn as a great cultural center featuring numerous choices for performance art. Check their website for upcoming events such as dance, music, etc. My favorite is the three year old International Puppet Festival held over two weekends in April. This is not to be missed. In such a short period of time, this theater has grown quite quickly. Just another wonderful addition to a city full of great art and music. In addition to the wonderful talent they provide, the building itself is charming. A very old church that has seen been days makes for a beautiful backdrop for all performances held here.

The place looked boarded up when we drove up to it. There was no one around and there were no signs of any kind. When I tried plugging it in the gps, I got an error message.

My date and I just saw one of Tennessee Williams last plays produced by the Tennessee Williams Theater Co. The production was spectacular.

The Marigny Opera House is housed in an old German Catholic church built in the mid 1800's. Seats are provided by a large and more than adequate set of risers. The use of the space is quite good. Acoustics are adequate though i do feel the actors could do with a little more projecting. I often found myself letting my eyes wander up and around to take in the majestic scenery and architecture.

It was a really lovely experience and in a setting that would go unnoticed by many. I would happily return to see another production by this team or any other at this locale.

This old church building has been converted to serve as a performance venue. It is available to rent for special events. It served as a wonderful venue for a wedding.
