About
Maskarade is an art gallery filled with handmade masks of leather, papier mache, feathers, and other mediums from over 40 local and national artists. We are a woman owned family run business since, 1998. All of our masks are wearable, comfortable, and hangable as art. These artist made masks range in price from $40 to $1,000.00 and up, mostly one of a kinds. To be able to have something to offer to all budgets is important which is why we have a souvenir wall in the back room with (Made in China) mass produced masks starting from $10 to $45. Neighborhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

I had to make three trips to get here in time before they closed, and it was well worth it. I wanted a "real" mask, instead of the plastic junk sold in most of the stores. The place is as described by others - part gallery, part store. The masks are beautiful to see on the walls and you can wander through just taking them in. They are also very reasonably priced and they will ship. I picked out a butterfly mask to donate for a fundraiser back home and they packaged it up and shipped it out without any issues or damage. I wanted to just keep wandering the store over and over again.

I collect Venetian carnival masks as a hobby, so while in New Orleans I wanted to get another mask made locally with New Orleans flair. Maskarade did not disappoint. It's a lovely shop centrally located in the French Quarter, family owned and operated, with a wide selection of masks. While they unfortunately do carry a considerable amount of cheaper masks from China for the party-going tourists, they more importantly have a beautiful selection of masks, headpieces and other masquerade accessories handmade by local artists.
I'd say the overall style of their handmade pieces is opulent, rich yet elegant - they have headdresses such as a "Cleopatra" piece dripping in gold beads, a Zebra headpiece rendered in black in white, and a collection of white pieces perfect for a masquerade wedding. The handmade masks range from the traditional Venetian styles (think rich hues, feathers and the full-face masks with elongated noses) to more locally inspired extravagant pieces overflowing with bright feathers. And while these gorgeous pieces of art are not cheap, the prices are entirely in line with what you would pay elsewhere for handmade Venetian masks imported from Italy.
In my case, I bought two large locally-made pieces which the shop shipped to me via FedEx. Everything shipped and arrived when the shop said it would, in perfect condition. They also emailed me the tracking info so I could keep tabs on it while in transit. Final tip - art pieces are excluded from sales tax so you can at least save that.
Highly recommend a visit, even if you're not "into" masks.

Talk about a cool shop!!! This beautiful shop is filled to the brim with the exciting flair of Marti Gras & Maskorade masks. A little something for every personality, price point and plenty of choices! One hat spoke to me! I had to have it! This was my first day and the first place I found something. Now, how to get it home? The lovely sales person offered to ship it for me! And to top that, offered to delay the shipping so it would arrive after I got home. Needless to say they were very accommodating! Such a personal commitment to service really impressed me. If you are in the area, go take a peek! Try on a few things, find your style, and ship it home! My hat represents my love for NOLA and brings those memories front and center every time I see it! Proud owner of a hat from Maskarade!

This is one of the only mask shops in new Orleans that has authentic European and American made----- one of a kind masks------. Many different types of masks available and they ship as well. If you want a real mask locally made and not a cheap copy from china.... this is the place to go.Lisa helped us at the shop, she was great. I called her when I returned home from NOLA and she very graciously shipped the masks that i had chosen. She was very helpful and made the purchase as smooth as could be. Masks arrived well packed and beautiful. THANK_YOU LISA!!!!

There are many opportunities for souvenirs in NOLA...and many tourist trap places to purchase them from. But this place offers something truly unique. Part gallery and part shop- the majority of masks on display here are handmade and available for purchase. Some simple, some extravagant with lots of frills! Bought two masks while I was in the area and absolutely love them. Staff is very friendly and love to talk about the area as well as the masks and how they are made. Definitely a must-visit- even if you don’t purchase a mask, you’ll want to try some on!!!

Unlike other shops in the quarter this shop is home to unique and handmade masks that are sourced from local artisans. They also have masks ranging from ~$20- $600+ so there is something for every budget. I went in looking for one mask and ended up leaving with two. The ladies working in the shop were extremely helpful and packed the masks with care. They will also ship the masks for you if you prefer not to travel with them.

I was blown away by the masks at this shop. Not mass made from China. They were handmade by local artists. I had the hardest time picking one to buy.

This two room mask shop is floor to ceiling masks. Most were hand made and some were manufactured but all of them were worth a look. There were beautiful feathered masks, ghoulish, ghostly masks, simple and ornate masks. Some cost hundreds of dollars while others were less expensive. It is incredible what some artists can do with a piece of leather. This store is worth a stop whether you'd like to buy a mask or just see some gorgeous handiwork.
Older kids who would not be tempted to touch would enjoy this shop as well as adults.

What an incredible display and assortment of masks. In my opinion, Maskarade rivals the mask shops we've visited many times in Venice, Italy. We were encouraged to know that the owner is firm in her commitment to having masks from local and American artists and not Chinese knock offs. Brava! Even if you are not in the market for a mask, I encourage to seek out this charming shop if only to see and appreciate the wide array of styles and craftsmanship that is on display and for sale.
