Neighborhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

What a lucky coincidence to pass this little theatre wandering around the French Quarter. Box office however never open so you must book online. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof opened on our last night of holidays ..... just brilliant .... hearing it in vernacular ...wow

We wanted to take in more than the bars and restaurants during our recent trip to New Orleans, so we decided to book tickets to this small theater tucked right behind Jackson Square.
We paid $20 for our tickets ($24 at the door) and were amazed at the quality of the show.
We will definitely come back again next time we are in town.

It was my wife's birthday again last weekend and the Le Petit Theatre was showing a Tennessee Williams play - "A Streetcar Named Desire" that she wanted to see. The play we saw last year on her birthday (A house divided or Divided Estate ????) was just as depressing as this famous Tennessee Williams prize winning depressing play. Hopefully the next time we come it will be a more uplifting and positive message.
This time we were only able to get balcony seats --not as good. The play we came to a year ago we sat on the main floor that had more leg room and we could see the stage.
Our same feedback as other reviews is:
From further back than the 1st row of the balcony you can't see the front of the stage - and no leg room.
The acting was fantastic - but my vote is to pick a more uplifting themed subject matter. Their next series is supposed to be a comedy (O God someting????) that might be fun to come back for.
There is a cafe adjoining, "Tableau", to get a drink or something to eat if that's in your plans.
There is only one small restroom area and at intermissions there are long lines - plan accordingly.
It is very convenient in the Fench Quarter - just diagonally NW of the corner of Jackson square & the Cabildo.

Even if there is no play going on when you are in the French Quarter it is worth your time to take a quick peek inside this very old and charming theater. Once inside the lobby you feel you have taken a step into the past.

I love the vibe in this theater. It is small and quaint. You are up close to the action. Great atmosphere.

We had heard this one-man show (with three characters) was very good and had not been downtown /French quarter for several months.
Barry Henley did a fantastic job playing all three characters and switching between them. The show was about 90 to 100 minutes, non-stop.
We have been here several times and continue to recommnend seats on the main level and not the balcony.
The theatre season this year looks like it has many good shows coming up. Next in line is "A Christmas Carol", then what appears to be a little bit of a dramatic comedy "A Gentleman's guide to Love & Murder", then a Tennessee Williams play - "Baby Doll", and lastly "The Pianist".
If you are in town and looking for a good entertainment option, this is a good choice. Shows are typically Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights and an afternoon matinee on Sundays.
It is adjoining the Tableau restaurant that we hear is a good eating option, and they have a small bar outside the theatre to get a cocktail or other drink.

Every year when I go to New Orleans, one of the first things I check, is to see if there is a performance scheduled for Le Petit Theater. The performances are usually good and the view is good from almost all seats. It's in a good location (kitty corner from the corner of Jackson Square on St. Peter) and close to many restaurants (next door to Tableau). This year's performance was "An Act of God" an irreverent play about a gay God and Angel Gabriel and Michael the Archangel. Only one woman got up and left mid-show.

We sat in the 4th row of the balcony and had great difficulty seeing the stage because there is inadequate sloping of aisles upstairs.

We saw Our Town on October 17. It was fine. The actors playing Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs, and Mr. and Mrs. Webb did particularly well. The actress playing Emily, I thought, seemed a little weak. The actor playing the milk man seemed to be the only one who decided to clearly deliver his lines with a New Hampshire accent. The Stage Manager was played by Carol Sutton. Between her New Orleans accent, high pitched and not particularly strong voice, and propensity to deliver lines while not facing the audience, I sometimes had a hard time understanding and following her. I wished Hal Holbrook had been around to play the role. We also had an issue with the adjoining Tableau restaurant, which decided to seat a boisterous dinner party in the courtyard right next to the theatre (separated only by a door). Their laughter could be heard in the theatre, detracting from the play. Other than that, it was good.

Do you conduct tours? I'd like a couple, who are friends, to see the theatre, including behind stage, lighting control and costume floor, then have dinner at Tableau. We won’t be there during the season. So, we won’t be able to enjoy a performance during this visit, but would like to explore the theatre.
