Address
Neighborhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

Gorgeous gemstone specimens and jewelry
Dec 2019
Much of the jewelry is designed and fabricated in house. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the energetic properties of the gemstones. The shop is loaded with a full array of items for the casual buyer all the way to the big spender/collector. They will size ring purchases and ship your pieces to you. I imagine they offer a whole world of custom jewelry design, and the creator is an eccentric, New Orleans delight. They have an amazing collection of Louisiana opal in many forms. Let the rocks speak to you.

Magical

I was referred to this store by a friend that lives in New Orleans. What a fantastic recommendation. Sarah was awesome and so very knowledgeable about all of the stones and crystals. A warm and welcoming experience, so much to look at and such a knowledgeable staff. This will be a definite stop any time I am in New Orleans!!

Terrible experience
Jul 2018 • Family
We made a special trip to French Quarter Gem and Lapidary recently. It all started wonderfully. My 10yo daughter loves rocks, minerals, and gems of all kinds. While my wife went with her, I kept our 2yo son by the door. He sweetly picked up various rocks and showed them to me. “Daddy, look!” He would then place them back in the appropriate basket and even straightened the signs for each. A very kind employee stayed right with us. The owner walked up to the employee and said, “Don’t let any s### go down over here.” She told him that she was watching us and wouldn’t let anything happen. He kept approaching her and talking down to her. When I saw how he treated his employees, I decided that I wouldn’t buy anything for my son, so I picked him up and held him in the middle of the room so there could be no illusion that he was touching anything else. The owner continued to make remarks to his employees so I asked the lady working there if I should leave. She said that it would probably be best. I complied. I took my son outside to wait for my wife and daughter. Without knowing what had happened, they bought a substantial amount of rocks for a 10yo. Later, after I told my wife what had happened, she wrote a negative review on the shop’s Facebook page. The owner sent a nasty private message back in which he insulted her, the teaching profession, and her ability to mother our children. If you have no problem with a person who attacks you for speaking the truth, then you’ll be fine in French Quarter Gem and Lapidary. As for me, I will never again cast my shadow across his doorstep. In the pictures, you will find the owner’s comments to my wife.

Great Unique Pieces and Friendly Staff
Mar 2018 • Friends
I found this place searching online and made a note to myself that I had to stop on my recent trip to New Orleans during my first visit to the city. One of my favorite things to do is to buy keepsake pieces during my travels - mostly jewelry and art - to remember my trip that I'll enjoy for a long time.

I was traveling with a big group and we happened to be close by and decided to stop in. The store was pretty busy. They have a lot of really great silver pieces. I took a few minutes looking at their various stones and looked at a few rings. I settled on two silver malachite rings - one for me and one for my mom. The man who helped me pick out my rings was very nice and helpful - the staff was not pushy. I'm an easy sale when I know exactly what I want and was in and out of there in about 20 minutes with two really great pieces. I think when jewelry shopping you need to know what you're looking for in order to get something of good quality. The FQ Gem and Lapidary has amazing pieces. Will definitely stop back on my next visit to New Orleans.

My favorite place to buy stones
Mar 2018
I love this place, a friend introduced me to it two years ago so now I visit every time I am in town. The prices are great too. The stones feel great and they have a good selection. I have been to other places that sell crystals and they feel so uninviting or cold, so this place is a Gem. I'm always a happy customer.

Rings Galore!
Jun 2017 • Solo
Love this place for their variety of rings-precious, semi precious and just interesting materials. Been coming for 8 yrs when we come to our timeshare and have taken many visitors with me. The staff is helpful and they bend over backwards to get your ring sized before you go home. Wonderful for rock lovers, too.

Impressive As Ever
May 2017 • Friends
So pleased the FQ Gem and Lapidary is still here. It still has the most impressive inventory as ever, at reasonable prices. And, oh, that floor! I purchased "mardi gras" bracelet with appropriately colored stones (purple, gold, green) that was simple, elegant, and beautifully made. My description doesn't do this piece justice. Very pleased with my purchased items and look forward to my next visit to NOLA and the FQ Gem and Lapidary.

A Stony Surprise
May 2017 • Couples
As you wander past Cafe Du Monde and Jackson Square, turn left at the statue of Joan of Arc and walk down the quiet street.Next door to a store that sells custom leather goods you'll find this small shop. It is full of beautiful gems and stones. There are items large and small, jewelry, and more. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is outstanding. So step out of the heat and humidity and step into a sparkling, beautiful space. Browse and buy!
