We took full advantage of this company by signing up for three tours whilst in the city. There is a booking fee, and we were informed that if you (the customer) doesn't pay it the guide has to, so its worth doing, or if you don't remember this when tipping. The first tour we did on out first day was the French Quarter Tour with Sandy. This was a great tour, she was funny, informative and answered all questions we had. We ended near the French market, and its definitely worth having a look around for bargains and the best Hurricanic to sample. The tour gave us a great understanding of the area and helped us get our locations for the rest of the trip. We did the Ghost tour with Meri, this was in the evening and again focused in the French Quarter, this tour was ok but I would have like there to be more ghost stories as it felt there was a lot of general information which was a bit of a shame. Finally we did the Voodoo Tour with Priest Robi. The meeting for this is just outside of the French Quarter and stays in a park, so is good for people with limited mobility. I went with limited knowledge about Voodoo, if you are expecting spells and witchcraft you will be disappointed, if you want to learn what Voodoo really is, how and why it was created and how it is practiced today, this is for you. Robi is informative, entertaining and will challenge your views. It is a lot to take in but something so different and moving that I would recommend anyone with an open mind signs up.

I had read articles by Free Tour by Foot for other cities, so was interested to actually do one of their free tours. Our guide Sean took us around the Garden District for about 1h35m and we had a lovely time. Pushing our 10 month old in a stroller was not the easiest (though it isn’t anywhere in New Orleans) due to the horrendously cracked and bumpy pavements, but we just about managed. It didn’t feel like too much walking, with frequent stops to talk about the various sites, but it was quite a large group, so it was hard to hear our guide at times. The tour ended 1 block away from where we started, which is near to a great cafe called Chicory House if you need a drink before or after the tour.

I went on the following tours which I would highly recommend. I received an email the night before for each one with a picture of the tour guide and detailed information about what to know/expect ahead of time. All of the tour guides were upfront about appreciating any tips at the end but never pressured you in any way or even told you what amount to give throughout the tour.

These folks are truly passionate about sharing and educating tourists about their hometown. They were very open and generous regarding any questions asked of them and giving recommendations regarding restaurants/what to do/what to see.

I learned that if someone who signed up doesn't show up for the tour, the tour guide is expected to pay out of their own pocket for that reservation so please be mindful when you sign up (they aren't trying to swindle you by any means. or at least I never got that vibe from any of them). If you can't make it to the tour, email them ahead of time or even text the tour guide you can't make it.

Disclaimer: I didn't pay the optional booking fee when I made a reservation for any of the three tours I went on.

I found each of the tour guides to be professional, engaging, well informed, and hilarious in their own ways! They all started talking about historical facts first before mentioning any myth/folklore and was very neutral in letting others decide for themselves what to believe or not.

1. Nighttime Ghost Tour with Meri

2. Garden District Tour with Daniel

3. Priest Robi's Voodoo Tour

I found the FTF website to be very helpful and used it a lot to plan my trip and to compare different companies regarding services they offered/price.

Not 5 stars because of the following:
I signed up for the St Louis Cemetery 3 / Bayou St John tour well ahead of time but never received an email the night before from the tour guide. Therefore, I reached out via email to reservations to ask if they can confirm if the tour was still happening. I messaged another tour guide as well who was very responsive and tried to be helpful which I truly appreciated.

However, I didn't receive an email response back from someone named Sarah until 1 hour before the tour started the next morning forwarding me the email that the tour guide sent stating it probably went to my spam/junk. Obviously, I was disappointed I couldn't make it since the tour wasn't walking distance from where I was staying. Unfortunately, the tour got cancelled the next day it was happening as well.

Terrible tour, waste of money, didn't do the tour as listed on the website and even the guide said that the company has to update the page since they don't do what is listed, especially the cemetery portion which is what we all wanted to do most. The guide also kept going off on personal rants and seemed as if she was more interested in poboys than the tour itself. Save your money and deal w a reputable company, this one failed miserably and didn't provide at all what we paid for and was a complete flop. Don't waste time or funds as they don't provide what they say they do and even the guide told us that the owners just sold the company and don't control the business anymore and it's all just a big scam! Terrible:-(

I’m sorry that you had such an experience but I would appreciate your help in clarification. We do not advertise that we enter a cemetery (in fact the word cemetery does not even appear on our webpage for the ghost tour). Could you help us clarify where you saw that? This tour has never visited a cemetery so we do not tell guests that we do. We are not under new ownership, I have been running New Orleans for 12 years. We have brought in new management support as we expand tour offerings but we’ve had the same owners since we started and they continue to work tirelessly to provide excellent tours as evidenced by our number of 5 star reviews.

Daniel was super knowledgeable, easy going, fun, and thorough. He was engaging, asked and answered questions, made sure everyone was following along and comfortable, etc. This Tip-based tour is very much recommended! I would definitely want to do some of the other tours with him in the future as well.

I did the garden district tour with Sean chick. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. I’ve actually taken a previous tour with him and that was equally great. I would highly recommend free tours by foot foot to everyone who want to learn a lot about the city.

We loved our foodie tour with Adelai back in early November! She was so knowledgeable about both food and history of New Orleans and Louisiana in general. We enjoyed all our stops on the food tour and got to taste amazing Louisiana cuisine. She delightfully shared her love for her Arcadian Cajun heritage and taught us about the "holy trinity" of garlic, celery and bell pepper. We were able to see two parades and when two of the restaurants were too crowded for our large group, she was able to come up with wonderful alternatives. We highly recommend Free Tours by Foot in New Orleans and look forward to booking again with them.

I recently took the Free Tours by Foot walking tour in New Orleans with Sandy as our tour guide. She was absolutely amazing! She had an abundance of knowledge about the history of New Orleans and she really brought the stories to life with her enthusiasm and humor. She was so funny, she had us laughing the entire time we were walking around the city. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking to learn more about the city and have a great time doing it. Sandy is an amazing tour guide and I would highly recommend her.

We did the evening ghost tour and it was so much fun! Evian was a great storyteller with a great mix of humour, historical info, and spooky stories. It was a fun combo of historical stories and more contemporary ones which I found very unique. The pacing of the walking was just right for our group and Evian was great at making sure we could all see and hear. Highly recommend!!

About a month ago I visited NOLA and opted for a ghost tour. Free Tours by Foot was actually recommended to me by another touring company because they didn't have a ghost tour option that worked with my schedule (I was in town for a short time & during the week). Evian was our tour guide. He was punctual, engaging and personable! He did a wonderful job sharing various ghost stories near Jackson Sq. I would absolutely recommend doing a tour, especially if Evian is your guide. I definitely will utilize this company for other tours when I'm back in town!
