5 stars aren't enough for this fabulous, intimate behind the scenes look at what makes Mardi Gras tick. The vaults of the Louisiana State Museum were opened to small groups and the event was led by Wayne Phillips, who is curator of costumes and textile there. After wandering through a warehouse level filled with histiric costumes (ohhh!), we were seated around a large table that was filled with Mardi Gras memorabilia dating back many generations.

Wayne spoke about the history of the event and showed how costumery plays such an important role in the festivities. The detail on every costume we saw was amazing. There were also costume design renderings, krewe ball invitations, photos galore, and lots of info on the Washington D.C. Mardi Gras Ball (which I'd heard about).

The evening began with champagne. Only 20 tickets were sold for each of 4 showings, so I feel honored to have been able to attend. In fact, I was the only non native there!

Highly recommend this organization. I'll be back again, I hope!

This walking tour is one of the neighborhood & cultural tours offered by the FOC, a private non-profit group. Our tour lasted about 2h and our guide Sandy was very knowledgeable about the history of the Garden District and the different architectural styles on display there. She even brought print-outs so we could “see” what the inside of the houses looked like. There are many tour groups to choose from, and I highly recommend the FOC as all of their guides are volunteers!

We took the Marigny walking tour with Donna today, and it was a pleasure from start to finish. Donna really brought the history of this fascinating corner of New Orleans to life, snd we learned so much about the history and architecture of the neighbourhood. We even got to visit the inside of one of the grand house. Cannot recommend this highly enough!

Excellent historic walking tour of New Orleans. This non profit group is a much better value than the tours pushed by the hotels. Our guide, Roger, was a highly knowledgeable local former teacher, with an engaging personality and sense of humor. We thoroughly enjoyed his tour. We learned a lot about the history and culture of New Orleans today! Highly recommend.

My family participated in the Creole Christmas House Tours. Though 2 of the sites we visited (1850 House, Spring Fiesta House) were very informative and what we were expecting, the remaining stops were very disappointing. They were minimally (basically not) decorated for Christmas and the volunteers did not share information about the sites or Creole Christmas unless you went out of your way to seek them out and ask your own questions. At $40/pp we were expecting much more of an experience, especially since you can pay to do individual tours of each home, see more of the homes, and actually get provided with information on the homes.

Looking for a good tour and not a tourist trip brings us yesterday by The Friends Of The Cabildo. We are so happy that we did. Our guide was Edmond Wattigney. A retired very knowledgeable, humorous, nice and polite man. He took us for 2 hours trough the French Quarter telling all types of stories and facts. Not only historical ones but also contemporary and funny. Also architectural facts passed. We learned a lot yesterday. We think it is the best way to learn a city like NO a little bit by hearing the stories from the people who know and love their city. Thank you Edmond making our time in NO better and more memorable.

We did the 6pm "Ghostly Gallivant" event on Oct 20, and enjoyed every minute of it. It began with beautiful, eerie accordion music in the courtyard, with complimentary beer/wine/cold water. We were then whisked away by one of the costumed docents to a short talk about the history and practice of Voodoo, complete with a visit by Marie Laveau herself. About a half dozen "living history" skits with costumed performers followed, with something to interest everyone. It was a lot of fun and historically interesting.

We took the Irish Channel neighborhood tour. Coleen grew up in the neighborhood and was super-knowledgeable about history and culture of the place. It was especially interesting to go into St. Alphonus and St. Mary churches and to learn how their progress has been intertwined over the last 150 years. Fine tour!
