- NativeCalGalSanta Cruz, California144 contributionsThis place is fun and interesting! This was informative and fun! It also houses the Museum of the Cocktail. Great history of both food and drink, broken down into sections by state. There are cooking classes available (both Cajun and Creole, with advance reservation). A group of school kids had been there as we arrived, and they made too much Bananas Foster, so we got free dessert! There are really good books for sale, too. Don't sleep on this! We went right after lunch at Cafe Reconcile, a great segue.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 24, 2023
- CydnHankChicago, Illinois158 contributionsA real gemSmall but interesting museum. The cooking class with Chef Dee is a highlight, so check into that! Taking the class also comes with a short presentation by a staff member about some of the exhibits and the history of the building. So glad we had it on our schedule.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 1, 2024
- LadyN516Atlanta, Georgia100 contributionsExecution needs workI get what they were going for concept-wise but the execution could definitely use some work. The information was interesting but you gotta work for it so pack your patience. I wasn't exactly sure what you had to do to be able to sit in on a cooking demo, that part was not well explained. But the ticket price isn't horrible even without it.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 29, 2024
- ockerman194 contributionsEnjoy a cocktail and reminisce about southern classics and favoritesWe arrived about 90 minutes before closing on a Thursday, found free street parking and had the museum to ourselves. Friendly and knowledgeable Camille gave us an orientation, made us a lovely French 75 and then let us explore the quirky displays. Everything from historic products, iconic dining spots, classic cookware to recipes will bring back memories and make you want to get cooking or perhaps just eating. There are also classes offered for those who may be interested. We picked up a cute tea towel and cookbook as souvenirs and left for a nearby wine shop they recommended.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 17, 2024

This is a real find. A museum dedicated to the unique food and beverages from each of the southern states. exhibits show the food origins that make the south. You will learn a lot. An easy walk down MLK Blvd from the St Charles Street car.

The class was fun. We made appetizer/main and dessert. The chef D was informative and fun. The food was excellent. We also got a history lesson from one of the museum workers about the history of New Orleans and differences in creole and Cajun. We also toured the museum ..it was very well done. Can’t say enough about what a fun experience it was!!!

This museum is small and doesn’t take a lot of time but has good information. It has areas for each southern state with information on food and drinks from there. Some states have more information then others. They also have a section for popeye chicken and alcohol section. Great activity for a rainy day or to fill up an hour or so of time. There is on street parking that is free and staff was very friendly.

This is how to learn! We signed up for the Cajun Cuisine Class and could not have been happier when the first instructions were to 'wash your hands and tie on your apron'. Workstations and ingredients were so beautifully organized. Chef Dee mixed instructions and stories into the session and time went too quickly. Our group ended up with such a savory meal. The table was set and we enjoyed every bite, all the conversation and laughter. Will absolutely do this again. And again.

The cooking class with Chief Dee was the best part of our trip to New Orleans. Food is a huge part of any trip to NO but taking this class let me not only enjoy a 3-course lunch, but also learn how to replicate the tase and experience when I get home. Chief Dee and her sister/sous-chef, Candy, made the class highly entertaining, not in a goofy touristy way, but in a fun relaxing way. The class also includes a terrific discussion of NO's history as told through its food, particularly Creole and Cajun ingredients and preparations. The young woman (whose name I missed!) who talked about history is a terrific story-teller. Highly recommend this museum and their classes!

This is a fun little museum. There is a small concise exhibit on foods that each southern state is noted for. My favorite part is the huge wall exhibits on the Museum of the American Cocktail. This was very well done and interesting, with many old alcohol bottles, unique shakers and other bar tools, vintage posters and other unique items. There is a bar that was rescued after Hurricane Katrina where you can have a drink before you go. It is a fun place to visit. Plan 1-2 hours.

Was looking to kill an hour and found this instead. 3 hours later...
Needless to say we found this museum fascinating. A culinary history of the South with a section on each state featuring food, drinks and info on each. Check out the "Katrina Food Cart"!
Also the American Beverage Museum is contained within with a section on Absinthe.
Even though we were not taking the cooking class, we met Chef Dee who hooked us up with some of the best gumbo ever!

Excellent tourist level cooking class. Mainly everyone preps the food for the one pot meal. Lots of good cooking techniques are explained to you. The museum was really fun to walk through as it brought back memories of kitchens you may have grown up in.

We were looking at the map and this place just popped up. We were delighted not only with the museum but with the wealth of information provided by the young woman who was working there. The building has some history to it, and there is interesting overlap with the civil rights history in the city. Recommend very highly for that, but it's also just plain fun.

I did not eat there. I only enjoyed the museum which is outstanding.

Under an hour. It's one big open room, about the size of a car or furniture showroom, maybe 8-10,000 square feet.

We were there when they opened so were able to get parking right in front on the street.
