New Orleans is infamous for its spooky past, filled with tales of voodoo, vampires, ghosts, and witches. During this walking tour, save time with a guide who knows the quickest routes around the Big Easy and brings the folklore and history of the city to life, all during the creepiest time of day—the night. Absolutely loved visiting these beautiful cemetery grounds. The place is huge and magnificent with tons to look at and walk through. We spent a few hours just walking through perusing and paying respects. Very quiet with few other visitors. With all the cemeteries in New Orleans we chose to come to this one as we were traveling with a dog, and it’s dog friendly. We encountered no issues walking around with him but obviously were also respectful when admiring the graves and plots. It was very beautiful and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

We went to Lake Lawn Metairie because during Covid, many of the other above ground cemeteries were closed to the public. We didn't regret our choice and ended up spending much longer than we thought we would, the above ground tombs here are stunning and captivating and built on a large scale. There is such variety and detail. I expected white rectangular box shaped tombs and there are certainly rows of that but in addition we found pyramids, chapels, statues and many fascinating stories. The cemetery is large and easy to find, but the entrance is more tricky. If you arrive by car from downtown, go under the freeway and then take an immediate right. Lake Lawn is so large, you can tour by car. You are allowed to drive through the narrow lanes, just make sure to stay on the public pathways and drive slowly and carefully. Alternatively, you can also walk. I would highly recommend downloading a walking tour before we go. There are several available both free and for a small fee online. We learned so much more about the people buried here from our tour. I truly hope this place can be preserved and its history won't be erased. I was most touched by the angel of grief monument at the Hyams plot in the southeast corner. To see the angel, you do need to get out of the car and go around to the side that faces the wall of the cemetery. I recently learned that this is a copy of a famous statue in Rome, but it is still worth seeing. Entry is free. We felt very safe since social distancing is easy here and there were no crowds at all. We found ourselves almost alone on a Sunday afternoon.

This is a very clean and quiet place. The cemetary has impeccable upkeep and is a great place to see all your friends that hang out in the City of New Orleans.

Coming from Alberta it was interesting to see that all of the tombs were above ground and with a lot of names written on them. It was an interesting tour
