As an environmental scientist from the west coast, the tour was just the kind of tour I would be interested in. It was fun to talk shop with Barbara and learn how things are done differently in LA. It is so amazing how the area has come back after Hurricane Katrina and in some ways for the better. Barbara is a lovely woman, great tour guide, and her passion for the area's ecosystem really comes through. Since we were staying near City Park, it was really interesting to hear all about the efforts that have gone on there. The only bummer was that Dong Phoung was closed for the Lunar New Year. We were looking forward to that.

Our group of friends has been coming to NO for several years. As we were planning, this tour caught my eye. I reached out to Barbara and explained our schedule and she put together a wonderful itinerary for a customized private tour. We were picked up promptly at the agreed spot in a spacious and comfy van. Our tour host was a professor at a local University with a passion for the history, geography and the wildlife of the area. His presentation included not only the rich history of the delta settlement but the more recent impact of Hurricane Katrina. He was a great guide, open to questions and very congenial. We were all very impressed with this wonderful and unique educational opportunity. Highly recommended!

This is a family fun company with a strong emphasis on education and history. We were fortunate enough to have Professor Peter as our guide. The University educator made us his pupils for the day with history, stories and a true love of the eco system.
You travel in a comfortable van as the professor narrators and gives you info at every twist and turn. We stopped at a Vietnamese bakery and enjoyed authentic Asian sandwiches and sweet backed items. Then it’s off to Shell Beach in the St Bernard parish to explore the fishing fleet and monuments to victims of hurricane Katrina. We even saw a fisherman catch a red fish from the bank
It’s a couple of hours of info about this area that you would have never known
Well worth the price and highly recommend

We are frequent travelers to New Orleans and always looking for something different to experience. This is a one of a kind tour of the wetlands, lakes, canals, coastal communities, the impact of Katrina in many neighborhoods to name a few of the highlights of this 5 hour tour. We have taken many tours, including those on the aftermath of Katrina, but this tour made you experience the impact, showed flood walls that were breached, towns that were devastated and what is being done to revive coastal barriers. Visiting Yscloskey and Shell Beach located behind the flood walls put a real perspective on why these areas were hit hard. Viewing the Hurrican Katrina Memorial on Shell Beach was sobering. In Yscloskey we got to see male and female crabs and even got to touch a soft shell crab. Other highlights were the site of the Battle of New Orleans, visiting an award winning Vietnamese bakery, going past NASA Michoud. Barbara is amazing with her breadth of knowledge and was fun to spend time with; she was definitely not "a tour guide" but a friend. This is a must for locals as well as those visiting who want to see the real New Orleans.

Dr. Peter Yaukey, did an amazing job identifying birds, providing geographical information and history on New Orleans as well as neighboring parishes. It was captivating observing the modifications homeowners in the flood zone took to protect their homes in the event of severe weather. It was great to explore areas that other tour companies did not touch on. I have a greater appreciation and respect for the residents of New Orleans, the wildlife, and the parish.

This tour is for everyone, visitor or local, who wants to get out of their typical bubble and learn about not only the history of NOLA and its neighborhoods, but also the ecology of the incredible wetlands and marshes that surround the city, and how they both played a part in both how the city was created, and are vital for the survival of the cities future. Plants, animal species and an exploration of St Bernard - part of one of the largest shrimping, oyster harvesting and crabbing economies in the country - are all on the itinerary and Barbara is neither short on information nor commitment and flexibility! Highly recommended for those seeking to learn and explore.

Thanks so much for your 5-star review Kevin! Really appreciate your highlights on what made this tour so special for you. It was a special, fun adventure with you and Jonathan to experience this amazing place and people from your fresh perspective. Loved how you were up for new adventures, including talking with Lynnette Gonzales, a local shrimper, dock/ ice house owner and drummer!!!

What a wonderful day our family had with Barbara of Great Delta Tours! This tour greatly exceeded my expectations. Barbara provided us with an afternoon that brought us to parts of greater New Orleans that we never could have seen on our own. Our afternoon touched on history, preservation, commerce, restoration of eco-systems, architecture, ornithology and city planning! And if that sounds dry, it sure wasn’t! Barbara is a natural storyteller and teacher and brought all of the information to life in a way that was engaging to me, my 9 year old son and my 75 year old mother. This was our first visit to the city and I feel this tour was key to understanding both the struggles and joy of this fascinating area. Highly recommend! P.S. The lunch stop was delicious!

On a recent visit to New Orleans my wife planned a variety of activities. On the question of a city tour I asked for something different than just looking at buildings and restaurants. What she arranged for us far exceeded my expectations to see New Orleans. We had the privilege to have a guided tour given by a professor, Peter Yaukey, from the University of New Orleans who specializes in the impact of urban development and hurricanes on wildlife. So first we learned a lot about New Orleans from someone who has lived in the area for 25 years. His stories of how and why New Orleans developed as it did were outstanding. We also toured areas devastated by Katrina and learned how these areas recovered and were still recovering. A trip outside the city took us to a Viet Nam bakery for a quick sandwich lunch which we enjoy in a preserved area. All along the way we were treated to a narrative about the wildlife and birds we saw. Hearing about the effects of Katina on the wildlife and the devastation of some of the forest areas was difficult to hear and see. A trip to one of the towns along the inland waterway helped us to understand how the people lived and worked in the area. The fishing boats, the houses built on stilts and distance traveled for shopping showcased the lives of the area. This was not only a tour of the area but also an education about the area. This was exactly what I hoped it would be.

I definitely recommend this bus tour of the outer-New Orleans area! Barbara was a courteous and knowledgeable tour guide, knowing tons of history about New Orleans and the efforts being made to restore the ecosystem and economy after Hurricane Katrina. It was a great opportunity to relax, enjoy snacks from the places we stopped, and get to know various local people around the area we met along the way. The whole day was interesting in terms of sites and history, and I already have impressed my friends back home with knowledge I learned on the tour!
