The weather was perfect for an informative stroll around University Heights--a beautiful and peaceful neighborhood that is kind of hidden on a hill high above the campus. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and several homeowners even came out to share stories about their homes. This was our first Historic Madison tour and we were prompted to do it because as members of Historic Milwaukee, we get a discount. We will certainly try to take some other tours in the future.

Richard gave an informative tour on a beautiful day in July! I appreciate that the tour starts out with information about ancient peoples who first occupied this land, as well as the contemporary Ho-chunk and Dejope names and tribes. He included information about red-lining and segregation as applied to Madison in particular, which is why there would be no people of color mentioned on this tour, and also descriptions of black historic neighborhoods. The Madison Trust for Historic Preservation does have a new tour devoted to one of these areas just east of the Wisc. capitol building. I learned about all kinds of styles for residences, trends when the homes were built, the architects and their clients, and the history of various homes in University Heights. We were able to enter one home. At another home, the owner came out to answer questions. All the yards in this gorgeous neighborhood were in their full summer glory. Such a delightful afternoon.

Guides are friendly, groups are informal, and the houses in each neighborhood are distinctive. Well worth the time.

I've been around Madison since the 60s and found out about the Historic Architecture Tours this year. Thanks Covid! These tours are a great way to learn about Madison and its architecture. The docents are very good with an easy and informative presentation style. After the first tour, my husband and I joined. We are looking forward to more tours.
