Its a great place for shopping, dining, walking around!

I grew up in Madison and it's a Madison classic! Many wonderful places to spend time-Orange Tree imports, Brocach Irish Pub, Trader Joes.

If you are visiting Madison or new to Madison, one of the secret places that is quickly becoming a destination is Monroe Street. There are great examples of bistro dining, my favorite Jacs; bar-b-q of the most flavorable; old fashioned neighborhood joints with wonderful bar-burgers and rubins, and at Gates and Bovies, the best fryed cheese curds you're gonna find... Monroe Street is like no other street in Madison!!! You have the BEST salon called HAIR, a vintage record store, Trader Joe's, which I personally love, and many more stores & restaurants that you will just adore!! It is definitely a street you must walk down and check out all the cool stores they have and definitely check out the... More

An old-fashioned neighborhood main street, although quite gentrified--you'll find plenty of nice restaurants and small shops here, but no hardware store. There is the Trader Joe's though, which brings many people to the neighborhood. If you're visiting Madison, a good place to see another part of the city, much more mellow than downtown, and stroll down the leafy side streets... More

There are many small shops and restaurants with some fun bars along this street. I used to study ballet here long ago. Stop at Micheals Custard for a turtle sundae. Don't miss eating at some of the bistros.

In contrast to the review below, I am suggesting that come to Monroe Street *during* a UW football game, not before or after. During the game, everything is quiet as all the people are in or around the stadium. Enjoy the shops and help out the merchants who are deprived of business because the football fans take up all the... More

Yes there ARE still some places for shopping and eating that haven't been taken over by franchises and Monroe St. is one of them. Always great for a stroll and visit to any of the great variety of shops along the way. Only advice is to pay attention to whether there is a UW-Madison football game because Monroe St. is... More
