- Kathrin SPortland, Oregon710 contributionsBeautiful building in a peaceful setting. We spent a lovely morning wandering about the capitol building. There was a farmer's market, and a cheese festival going on which was fun. The capitol was pretty to walk around in, but we were so excited that we could walk to the top of the building too. There is a big terrace all the way around for 360 views of Madison. Highly recommend it on a sunny day!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 15, 2023
- dambankerToronto, Canada1,807 contributionsAmazing views from the topThey got me on this one... I normally prefer the self guided tours but as a group was just leaving I was persuaded to join. They have access to a couple of rooms that you don't on your own such as the governors office, which I wanted to see. The tour was very informative and the guide was very knowledgeable. I made it through most of the tour and then went on my own way as I was running short on time. I headed upstairs to the museum and of course the terrace around the outside of the dome. Overall it was very interesting I enjoyed learning about the red granite and the origins of the name Wisconsin. Do make sure to touch the badger's nose outside the governor's office for good luck and don't miss the terrace... the views are great from there. One of the more interesting capitol buildings, highly recommend visiting here.Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten October 21, 2023
- Jim TAustin, Texas1,172 contributionsCool CapitolWe were here just after Thanksgiving and saw the ginormous Christmas Tree in the rotunda. The tree was named 'Frank' for some reason. There are free tours offered at the top of the hour. There is virtually no security compared to the Texas Capitol, for instance. It's one of the biggest and best Capitol buildings in the country. Worth a visit, no matter how short.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 5, 2023
- SpfldForestGumpWestfield, Indiana111 contributionsBeautiful building with a nice museumGorgeous State Capitol. Unfortunately, we could not access the observation deck on the 5th floor due to maintenance. The lovely woman at the information desk encouraged us to go on up and look at the museum and indoor viewing deck of the rotunda. We took the stairs down and stopped on the 2nd floor and they had a great art exhibit on display. The tile and architecture are beautiful. We did not take the tour due to our limitation on timeVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 9, 2024
- Andrey NFlower Mound, Texas4,262 contributionsHighly recommend it on a sunny day!The capitol is one of the largest state houses that we have visited before. We walked around and were impressed by the lovely landscaping and openness of the area. The Capitol Building is an amazing repository of Art, Stone work, and Architecture. Highly recommend it on a sunny day!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 13, 2024
- Lisa BBethany, Missouri226 contributionsAbsolutely beautiful.Capital campus is lovely. They did have renovations going on three sides of the building. Great downtown area. Parked in a garage not far from building. You can enter through any door and do not have to go through security. Tour started on time. Large group were on our tour but it was still fine. Definitely worth doing the tour so plan your arrival on that. Only downside is there is no true gift shop area. We really wished we could have purchased something.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 19, 2024

It is always exciting to tour the Capitol Square and surrounding shops, particularly durring Farmers Market season. There are thousands of great things to explore and learn. Fun food samples at the Farmer's Market. There are even posters at the Market and one can get acquainted with the cows and goats supplying milks made into the Artisanal cheeses at the market. Exciting bookshops near the Capitol too.

The Wisconsin State Capitol impresses from the outside and the inside equally. It is visible from anywhere downtown as a white, overwhelming structure that gives a beautiful sense of classicism. The inside is full of grandeur and Roman inspiration, as well as plenty of hidden details that show the intricate planning involving in creating such a place. One can learn a lot about the history of Wisconsin in this place.

If you are in Madison, WI the Capital is a MUST see. It is beautiful inside and out. It is designated a National Historic Landmark, the capitol building sits right in the middle of the city where everything is walking distance from the Capital square it sits on. It is decorated beautifully for the Christmas holidays. The building is just a beautiful majestic building that everyone will find something to love about it!

We are on a 70-day road trip. This is the 10th capitol building we have seen in 42 days. Arriving just before the 1:00 pm scheduled tour, we were met by the tour hostess who clued us in on seeing a part of the capitol that would not be on the tour. It was actually outside the building on the circular walkway around the outside of the dome, with a great view of the city. The building itself is one of the prettiest we have seen in our travels, thanks in part to its recent renovations. Whether you are from Wisconsin, or from Florida (as we are) the history of the capitol building and a small taste of the history of Madison will enlighten you to the richness of this state and in the making of our nation.

We had an extremely good guided tour of the building with an very knowledgeable docent. We had the pleasure of speaking to her while waiting for the tour. We were amazed how she managed to control the children during the tour - a ‘child whisperer’.
The building is stunning in its design and its use of stone and scale. Amazing to walk the halls, then to stop and look up.
As a Canadian I’ve noted many times that we simply do not exalt our heritage the way Americans do despite the richness of our history. They do it better.
Great job, our many thanks to the Governor and his staff.

Wisconsin State Capital area was boarded up for several blocks around the capital. It is obvious that rioters and looting had taken place and several business were now closed. For Labor Day weekend this was disappointing.
The building is beautiful from the outside but during the pandemic we could not go inside. It appears that the governor had not protected the businesses int he area but that the State Capital grounds were keptt safe.

We started by being totally surprised that we were welcomed in without the typical bag search, waiting in line etc. Everyone working here made us feel so welcome. We did the self-guided tour since there were many school groups there and we would have to wait quite awhile to get a tour guide. But still, any questions we had were answered by staff. Don't forget to climb the stairs to the observation deck. The view is incredible from the deck. The rotunda is magnificent.

I enjoy touring state capitols so I indulged my appetites while in Madison on business.
Our guide, Diane, took us through several of the interesting rooms, including the
governor’s ceremonial office, the Supreme Court’s courtroom and a legislative chamber.
Her enthusiastic talk pointed out easy to miss features and tied the artwork into
Wisconsin’s history. Of particular interest are the many fossils visible in walls and
floors. Do not miss the view from the outside of the dome. The scens of Madison, land and lakes, are outstanding.
During a previous tour I concluded that Wisconsin has the most beautiful interior of any state capitol that I have toured, and this one confirmed that opinion.

You can do a self-tour or a guided tour (about 45 minutes) - The guided tour takes you into a few locked areas including the Governors Conference room as well as the Senate and House chambers. Lots of fun trivia and information about the capital building itself and the history behind it. We were hoping to be able to get to either the inside overlook or the outside one, but it was not available in February.

This is one of the largest state houses that we have visited and with very ornate interior. We were able to park on street with metered parking a couple of blocks away. Be careful to remember which door you go into since the interior is circular and you can easily get confused.

can anyone tell me if this statement from a friend is at all true? he claims that with all the stuff going on with religion that you CAN NOT BRING A HOLY BIBLE INTO THE CAPITAL BUILDING? i find that a bit far fetched and am not convinced there is any truth to that.

Are there any possibilities of finding a free parking near the Capitol? (Or reasonably chareged ones nearby)
Written August 10, 2018
There are two options. Meters and parking lots. Both are pretty reasonable.
Written October 22, 2018
Is there an entry fee to enter the Capitol? And where could I buy refrigerator magnets nearby?
Written August 9, 2018
No entry fee for Capitol, just walk one in. I think the tours cost $. There are magnets at the Walgreens down the street.

When do they put up the Christmas tree in the Capitol? We're going home for Thanksgiving, and I can't remember if it's usually set up in November...
Written August 18, 2017
Actually, the tree is dragged (!) inside the Monday after Thanksgiving. It takes a few days to decorate it, and the official lighting ceremony is that Friday, this year, Dec. 1. (I've worked there for 16 years.)

Are you able to bring a backpack inside the capitol building? What about a DSLR camera?
Written May 21, 2017
You can bring back packs and cameras and digital video recorders.
