Canyon Trails Ranch is hands down the best trail ride my husband and I have ever been on! The ranch backs up to the Canyon of the Ancients. We were able to ride through part of the canyon and Jessica, our guide, did a fantastic job pointing out ruins and educating us about the Pueblo Indians.
One of the reasons we loved this trail ride was the horses. My husband is an experienced rider and I not so much. The horses did need a bit of direction from their respective riders which was not hard and which we counted as a bonus.
We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and Jessica's company. We also enjoyed speaking with her father who showed us his workshop where he restores wagons. We visited in July and the weather was hot! You will need sunscreen, water and perhaps a hat. During the time of our visit they were only able to accommodate groups of 6 or fewer. We did the half day trail ride which took about 3 hours start to finish. We highly recommend Canyon Trails Ranch, you won't be disappointed!

My husband and I, along with our two best friends booked a half day ride at the suggestion of our innkeeper. It was so much fun, we would have done another ride if we had the time.

We met at the ranch at 8:30am, to try and start early and get a bit of a jump on the heat of the day. It was supposed to be in the 90's.

Jessica was our guide, and what a delight she is! Funny, warm, knowledgeable, experienced and genuine are how we'd describe her.

At their suggestion, we brought our own water bottles, and each horse had saddlebags to hold water, camera, phone, etc. Jessica matched us to our horses, and instructed us as to which order the horses liked to be in, and off we went.
We walked through the canyon area, up and down hills, saw ruins, and generally had a blast. At the midway point we dismounted and walked up into an area with remnants of cliff dwellings and explored the ruins and small cave located there. Frankly, it was kinda nice to give our inexperienced backsides a bit of a reprieve!

Jessica kept up a running commentary on the area, on interesting plant life, on stories about the ruins, and answered all the questions that we peppered her with. We enjoyed her company, and appreciated her genuine friendliness. She obviously enjoys what she does, and that creates an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment for everyone. While we aren't totally rookies with horses, we certainly don't ride except on rare occasion. So having a horse that is well trained took the edge off of any doubts that we had.
Like I said, we would absolutely do this ride again, and absolutely recommend that you do as well.

Our group commented that this was the best trail ride that we have ever taken. Loved the barn, kids, and dogs. What a cozy place! Each of our 4 family members had horses picked out for us and our various riding abilities. Jessica was a wonderful guide and host. Always making sure our whole group was together, but allowing everyone to take photos and enjoy the Canyon's of the Ancient National Monument. Telling us about the Pueblo people and showing us some of the archaeological sites. Nico, the dog, came along to keep us company. We had a bonus to our trip meeting Jessica's father who restores old wagons gave us a tour of the barn and we got to see a wagon in progress. Very cool!

It was July and hot so remember a hat, sunscreen, and water. A long hiking shirt would also be advised.

Not your typical trail ride! Highly recommend. We would certainly go again!

This is not a comment on the riding experience, for obvious reasons. I called to arrange a 1/2 day ride over a month in advance and after a bit of back-and-forth we settled on August 14th. This was the only day that our group would be in the area. About 10 days before that date I got a text message from Jessica asking if I could move the date to another day - specifically, the 7th 8th or 9th. This was not possible because of our travel arrangements. Subsequently I got another text saying that she would have to cancel our ride "because of a family emergency". It's a little suspicious that she would have a "family emergency" on exactly that one day and know about it that far in advance. I suspect we were preempted by a larger group wanting a full day ride which would have been much more lucrative for the ranch. Still, I have no reason to doubt the excellent reviews the ranch has received as far as a riding experience. Just a bit concerned about their business practices.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Colorado. Jessica did a great job instructing 1 adult and 3 teens/tweens on how to handle their horses, and led us on a beautiful ride into Canyon of the Ancients. Halfway through our ride, we dismounted and hiked to some ruins and learned more about the people who lived there. My daughter developed hives on the ride (we don't know why), and Jessica had all we needed in a first aid kit in her saddlebag. I would definitely recommend doing a trail ride with them if you are in the area.

You may have come to Cortez, CO to hike Mesa Verde, but don't leave without a trail ride at Canyon Trails Ranch. Jessica ensured we had a wonderful experience. She's an expert trail guide and shared her extensive knowledge of the area. Special shout out to our horses, Blondie and Tonka, who helped ensure their somewhat inexperienced riders stayed in their saddles and enjoyed the ride! It was relaxing, educational, beautiful, and fun. My wife and I would HIGHLY recommend it!!!

This was an awesome trail ride, a bit above my comfort level but Jessica made me feel very comfortable, safety was her number one concern. The riders were my husband, another rider, Jessica and myself which made it feel like a private ride. Jessica took us thru ancient Pueblo Indian ruins and during our walking tour up the mountain she showed us some artifacts. Thank you very much Jessica...

Great experience... Our family took an early morning ride to avoid the mid-afternoon heat and it was amazing. The horses were first class and the ride through the creek and up the canyon, was fantastic. Our guide Jessica was lovely, informative, and kept our birthday boy engaged. The dogs that joined us were fun to watch, they even found some deer antlers which, he hid for a later snack. Thank you so much for a fun time!!! We highly recommend this guided horse ride, you will love it :)

Had a wonderful ride today. Jessica could not have been a better guide, teacher, or host. She adapted which horse she assigned to each rider based on their skill set and therefor all 4 of us had a great day. The trail was beautiful and the horses were well cared for. Couldn’t have asked for a better riding experience.

My trip to Cortez, Colorado
Canyon Trails Ranch. My friends/neighbors Joe, Jessica and girls moved to Cortez. She made me promise to come visit. Four years later I did; little did I realize what an adventure awaited me. My visit included a trail ride-I had only been on a horse once. But, Jessica said no worries you’ll do fine-and I did.
The adventure began in the morning when Jessica got our horses saddled and two girls from Tennessee arrived. She has a special talent of picking a mount especially suited for it’s rider, mine was Tonka. He was great.
Jessica’s teaching skills (she teaches 3rd and 4th grade) really come to light as we are on the trail. Growing up in the area she is very knowledgeable of the plants, geology and of the Ancients and their ruins in and around Cortez, CO. If you are at all interested in the Native American and their history; Canyon Trails Ranch should be a must destination. We also visited Hovenweep National Monument and I hiked up in Sand Canyon...I also visited Canyonlands NP and Arches.
