Buddhist temple built over 2000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna. The ruins and remains of ancient stupas, Seema Malaka, Avasa Geya and statues can be seen at the site. Important ruins at the temple premises include stone statues of Buddha and two statues of old kings or gods.

This is an ancient Buddhist temple and has a historical and archeological importance. Temple spread across a large area and is located just by the sea as the name implies.
This was on spotlight recently due to some ethnic conflicts occurred in the area. Now an army camp is built here and army personnel guard the temple 24x7.
We visited during the pandemic and unfortunately the temple was closed for outsiders.

The road leading to the temple along the beach is beautiful. In the evenings one can see the fishermen pulling their nets. The temple has beautiful statues leading the way to the pagoda. The archeological site is beautiful with a statue of the Buddha and a few other statues of kings,

Muhudu Maha Viharaya is a serene and historically significant Buddhist temple situated in Pottuvil, on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast. This ancient site, nestled along the pristine shoreline, captivates visitors with its harmonious blend of spiritual tranquility and profound historical importance.
You can reach Muhudu Maha Viharaya by vehicle, but a short walk is required to access the temple itself. The journey adds to the charm of the visit, as you transition from modern transportation to a peaceful stroll that immerses you in the tranquil surroundings. The temple is quiet and serene, offering a perfect escape for reflection and appreciation of its historical significance.

A Buddhist temple with over 2000 years of history. According to the Sri Lankan historical inscriptions, the temple was built by King Kavantissa marking the land of Viharamadevi to the Rohana Kingdom. Viharamadevi was his queen and mother of King Dutugemunu who holds a prominent position of Sri Lankan history.
Temple is located in Potuvil, closer to Arugam Bay. Majority of ruins and artefacts belongs to the temple have been destroyed to capture the land. Thus, only few ruins are remaining.
Breathtaking view of the Indian ocean and sand dunes is unmissable. Extremely hot climate. So, avoid visiting the place during midday sun if you hate getting tanned. Hats and a water bottle are a must. It is a Buddhist temple. So, respect the culture and dress appropriately.
There are few food stalls selling local orange juice and sweets. Loved the orange juice as they add a little bit of pepper to it.
Not much to see. But a nice place. Ideal for a quick visit.

A beautiful temple marking the landing site of viharamaha devi. Scattered with stone statues and relics in the white sand dunes makes an impression in your mind. Great view of a clear beach from the dagoba area. Two lonely monks strive to protect this temple from encroachers and litter bugs alike. Help them if you can to protect this piece of history.

According to the records, the original land of this important historical site was more than 200 acres. now the "Poojaa Bhumiya" (Sacred Land) has been reduced to even less than 40 acres! there are only two Buddhist monks live in the monastery with threats to their lives and even the historical monuments in the land are also been illegally demolished. we need more travellers going to this Historical temple so the importance will not go faded and shaded in the memories of the time. it has one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen!
