An amazing lagoon boat ride with Capt. Jamaldeen and his partner Samsudeen Bawa. A rare experience to navigate through the Mangroves and see Elephants, Crocodiles and Eagles in their natural habitat. A must do if you visit Pottuvil as proceeds from the excursions go to support local families. Keep rowing Gentlemen, Heroes of the Lagoon !

If you go early morning or in the evening you will see plenty of birds, elephants and crocodiles. A boat tour can be organized from a roadside agent for 4000/- from Arugambay. The cost includes a 24 Km three wheeler ride (up and down) plus the boat safari. I had a car therefore the hotel advised me to go directly to the boat mooring place and pay for the tour which should only cost 3000/-. There are no price charts at the ticketing office. The president of the boat society (who was a crook, I later found from the boatman) was at the ticketing counter and said I had to pay 4000/-. I explained to him since I arranged my 24 km transport up and down the cost should b be only 3000/- but the crook still insisted that I have to pay 4000/-. Moral of the story. Don't arrange your own transport. Do it via the road side stall and let the three wheeler driver earn 1000 otherwise even if you arrange your own transport the president of the society will still charge you 4000/-. The boatmen are lovely people who are mostly farmers or fishermen at day time. The society president runs the business as the way he wants. There are 50 boatmen, they get turns. On the days we were there at least 10-15 boat trips were done daily which means a boatman would get his turn every 5 days. But our boatman said his last turn was 12 days ago. I explained the math to him and said it can't be. He said, he knows it too but the president of the society does not display the roster and gives more turns to his few cronies and once when the boatman pointed it out he didn't get a turn for 2 months.

You will see elephants, exotic birds, and maybe even a group of buffalo bathing or crocodile! The lagoon can get hot and humid, but the sunset is nice and relaxing there.

This is something every tourist must go on. Amazing experience. But the country really has to deal with proper garbage disposal. Otherwise this all going to vanish for soon.

Azi was awesome. He drove us from Arugambay to Galle for a reasonable price and we got to see elephants on the road while driving! Highly recommended.
