I visited in October and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoy history but expected HNM to be a little dry. Actually it was engaging and interesting. The national impact and overview of the Homestead act nicely complement the personal stories. From the into-video to the walk-through presentation, to the outdoors exhibits I was fully engaged for about 75mins. I wouldn't have minded spending another 30mins there.

Great place to learn history and also to take an easy hike. I wish the park rangers were a little more knowledgeable about what was located at the monument.

Not a typical destination or timeing, our visit turned into much more than expected. We stopped at the far end, west side and had a great chat with the staff working the building. Good examples of machinery and tools and wagons used in the past in the small indoor museum. The main building had extensive photos, examples, and stories about the homesteaders with a working database you could look up to see if maybe a relative or your own home was first established under the homestead act. We walked a small part of the restored prairie and could tell this would be an excellent prairie example during the growing season. As we moved on after our visit, the photos of the various buildings and styles were put into use as we traveled the countryside heading east. Wow! There are a LOT of buildings from the 20s - 30s - 40s and 50s still in use in the surrounding farmlands and we would not have recognised as many structures without having stopped at the Homestead site.

Interesting visit to learn about the Homestead act. A bit disappointed that the one room school house wasn’t open, but things are pretty slow around COVID-19 right now. Nice intro movie.
