About
Alas Kedaton temple and forest is located in Kukuh countryside, Marga Sub district, Tabanan Regency . It is a small forest measuring about 6-7ha located in the middle of the rice field in Tabanan regency, west part of Bali. In this place you'll see hundreds of monkeys in their natural habitat. It's one of the Bali attractions where monkeys exist, free and peaceful. High up on the big trees many bats area hanging and singing with their loud voices. It's very easy for the visitor to make videos, pictures - and meals might be taken in to offer to monkeys although sometimes this will make you a target for a monkey mugging which might be an interesting experience

As part of our Temple Tour, we found ourselves being taken to Alas Kedaton. As we reached the site we were told that this would be an experience similar to our time at the Monkey Forest in Ubud. In retrospect, that statement feels like someone taking you to an illegal pet shop and promising you an animal sanctuary. And I didn't even think the Monkey Forest in Ubud was all that!

We were guided around the frankly miniscule paved area by a woman with a stick, who told us that she needed the stick to help keep the monkeys at bay. This is hardly an endearing first impression, and just left my partner and I feeling far from safe.

As we walked around what felt like a large carpark, our guide brandishing her weapon with casual malice, we noticed a stall where you could pose with fruit bats. I cannot begin to tell you how much this enrages me. These bats are obviously heavily sedated or at the very least traumatized and find themselves at the mercy of inexperienced handlers and tourists who dangle them by their wings like some ghoulish trophy. This level of animal abuse fundamentally upsets me, and the moment we saw this, we decided to leave.

After telling our guide of our intention to leave, she insisted on taking us to her shop, and would not let the matter lie. She demanded that we at least look at her bric-a-brac and I could not take a single moment further.

The worst thing of all? We weren't even meant to go here! This was a sudden stop on our Temple Tour and all it did was piss me off and leave a bad taste in my mouth that meant that whatever we did next had to work twice as hard to make up for this gross blemish on our holiday.

Avoid.

Very small, takes about 10 minutes to walk around. Monkeys are cute but were a little aggressive.

The guide was nice at first, then takes you into her shop which has crazy prices and gets angry if you don't buy.

Part of the Tanah Lot half day tour.

Avoid!!!

We stopped here during a temple tour as a quick stop on route to another temple made by our driver, we wish he hadn’t have bothered as it left a sour taste in our mouth for the rest of the day.

We arrived into what seemed like an abandoned car park, with the sad scenes of skinny stray dogs, falling down shops and litter. We were handed over to our ‘guide’ who was friendly at first & walked us around with a large stick to fend off the monkeys - not a fan of this! She asked if we’d like to feed the monkeys and we did end up buying peanuts for the equivalent of £1, this was fine and we had no issues with the feeding.

She then led us around to where some fruit bats were kept. Nocturnal animals out during the day… big red flag! There were around 5 staff members who were pressuring us into taking photos, we felt very uncomfortable and were pressured into taking a picture, which we didn’t end up paying for in the end. However we paid 20,000 IDR for the photos taken on our own phones, afterwards we felt awful and just wanted to leave by this point.

Our ‘guide’ then led us to her small caged shop. In which she was insisting and practically begging us to buy something. We weren’t carrying much cash that day and did not want to buy anything, instead we offered her a reasonable tip, which she was not impressed about. Her mood shifted considerably so we went straight back to the car, while overhearing her and the other ‘guides’ bitch about us.

Overall a terrible experience & the place should be shut down!

We went here thinking it would be a less intense monkey experience than then Monkey sanctuary in Ubud (we were with older parents and didn’t want to risk monkey attacks). The monkeys here are not aggressive but there aren’t that many. The site was ok, not really much there. A “tour guide” lady goes with you even though it is not necessary. She doesn’t add much to the experience at all and isn’t able to really explain much. However, after the “tour” she takes you to her shop and you realize what they are after. We would have bought sometime if it was reasonable, but she tried to rip us off like we were born yesterday. We asked how much a mask was, which is similar to others we’ve seen elsewhere and could have bought for 150k ($10 usd). She had the gall to want 6 million for it ($400 usd)! Same with others things in her shop. When we walked away, all friendliness was gone. So go if you want a less intense but ultimately unsatisfying monkey experience, but just know that they will try to rip you off big time and be aware of that.

We visited this monkey forest as part of our tour and we really liked it.
I have to say, however, that we did not visit the monkey forest in Ubud.
We particularly liked the fact that there were hardly any tourists here and you could really spend time with the monkeys/take photos of them in peace.
You have a guide with you who keeps the monkeys away from you if one of them is pushy, which was not the case with us.
We bought peanuts for a small amount of money and our guide gave them to us individually so that we could feed the monkeys.

At the end you see some big fruit bats and you can take photos with them (for money, of course) - we don't need that.
There are also a few small souvenir shops and the respective guide naturally wants you to go into his - we didn't do that either and politely declined.

Conclusion: If you just want to see a few monkeys and take photos without making a big fuss, you can definitely go to this monkey forest.

So you arrive in a run down parking lot, complete with starving dogs (no I am not exaggerating, see the pics) ... you are assigned a "guide" ... who first tries to sell you peanuts to feed the monkeys then takes you on a 10 minute walk around the compound, explaining the overpopulation of monkeys and how they could not exist unless tourists fed them.

Well little does the unsuspecting tourist know but this "guide" is also a shop owner ... these shops are cages with locks like prison cells ... of course this scam is not revealed until the end where they take to to "their store" and literally plead, I mean seriously beg you to buy something ...

In our case I attempted to just give the lady a tip for taking us around the run down facility however she was almost frantic that I had to buy something ... once I had enough of that I turned to leave and actually had to unlatch the caged "store" to get out ... it really is a poorly run and maintained facility not to mention a straight out pathetic scam.

Take a pass unless you really want to see monkeys, just know you will be hustled the whole time.

I did enjoy the Monkey Forest. I’ve seen monkeys in the past it Burma, Thailand and Cambodia, but were wild and not approachable.

Lots of parking and the cost of the extremely low admission included a guide. I believe it was 25 Rupiah ($1.50 USD). I was able to pose with monkeys on my head & shoulders and even hold a live flying fox ( mega bat), which was so awesome.

What I like about this place is the monkeys are not in cages, they are free to roam around the premises. This is not a closed zoo, but I bet the monkeys stay because they are fed well by the staff.

Yes, the guides do carry a bamboo stick. This is for the safety of the guide and tourist. I’ve only seen them point the bamboo stick to an approaching monkey, which when you walk around, a lot of curious monkeys come up to you. And I believe it is because they think you will feed them.

The guide had crackers which she put on my open palm, and the monkeys would take them off your hand. Yes, these are wild animals, and not a domesticated dog or cat, and yes, they can bite. So I took the guides recommendation of not touching the monkeys.

There were a lot of females with their baby clinging on them, so cute, and I took a lot of pictures.

I also took a picture with a flying fox. I paid 60,000 Rupiah ($4 USD) for a picture of that, and even had pictures of that with my cell phone. A picture of me going to a Las Vegas Show alone cost $20 USD, so this photo souvenir was such a minimal cost because I would never hold a bat in the USA.

None of the flying foxes had any type of chain on them. There was about 5 couples there, and the females had their babies clinging to them. So cute.

As they fed the bats fruit, I was watching young monkeys steal the fruit from the bat’s mouth.

After the tour, the guide explained about all the shops. She said each stall has a number, and each guide had a number, so she was #146 out of 200 guides. She had a number on her name tag. We went to her stall, and I purchased a few monkey magnets as souvenirs for co-workers. Inexpensive. At the end of the tour, I tipped her 50,000 Rupiah (American Style for good service) which is like $3.75 USD.

I could tell from the stalls and the wire closure, was to ensure the monkeys do not steal merchandise, which monkeys can be very naughty, and in some places, they are trained to steal from tourist (sunglasses, purses, necklaces, etc).

Price a Range - $

This is a very inexpensive tour to visit. I spent more money on souvenirs because I was not hassled to purchased and wanted to see monkeys without a cage & I got to hold and feed a mega bat......I would of paid $50 USD for that experience

We came here as part of a full day tour and I wish we had looked it up before we came or we would have asked to skip it. We had been to the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud and thought it would be similar. It wasn't. A 20 minute walk around a desolate structure with a lady with a stick who was keen to keep the monkeys away from us, nothing like the Sacred Monkey forest. We were the only people there and I can see why.

We were taken to an area with bats hanging from a branch. The lady told us the bats were friendly and we should hold one and have a photo taken (at a cost of course). My concern wasn't if the bats were friendly but if they were ok?! I asked if they were healthy and free to fly off if they want and she laughed and didn't answer the question! We couldn't get out fast enough but as we're trying to leave she took us into her shop and put a lot of pressure on us to buy some tacky souvenir that we didn't want. When we said no and tried to leave she said we were her only customers and she was desperate and needed us to buy something.

This was a horrible experience and not at all in line with the wonderful, friendly people in Bali we had met so far on our trip.

There are good photo opportunities and the monkeys are cute. We had a local female guide who works there go with us. She helped with pictures.

At the end, she was pushy about us visiting her store. She locked us in the store, claiming it was necessary for keeping the monkeys out.

We did NOT like that!

When we arrived here, we had mixed feeling about this place. There were very few tourists around. The guide is a local person. I had a funny feeling about it. You can purchase food for the monkeys which we did. Since there weren't that many tourists, it's easy to get a picture with them. there were plenty of monkeys walking around. The actual place can use a clean up or a renovation.
There were fruit bats at the end that you can take a picture with. I wouldn't encourage this . They looked like they were locked in or something because usually they are able to fly around. I wouldn't suggest coming to this place. It didn't help that we were sent to the guide's store and literally locked up. When we negotiated the price and didn't like it, she insisted on lowering the prices. I wouldn't recommend it.
