you enter this temple with lots of expectations and surely it won't let you down. There is something unusual about this place that makes you feel really good. Maybe overall calm and composed temple atmosphere or the greenness. If you are travelling this side. please make time for this temple. This is one of the must-visit temples of Kerala.

This remote temple is set in a beautiful forest. The building is in a typical Keralian style and shows the intricate woodwork so typical of these temples. As it is dedicated to to Snake King (God?) there is an extraordinary display of snake art - the Cobra being the snake. There are carvings and painted reliefs but most incredible are the thousands ( supposedly, 30,000) of stone images of Cobras. The grounds of the temple are beautiful and warrant a long stroll to the Kali temple. There were no more than half a dozen other visitors when we were there so the quietness was wonderful.

It was a great experience to visit this sacred snake temple once again during the morning hours. The place is kept clean and orderly and support systems like cloak room, rest rooms, restaurant, parking are all available to the visitor. A must for Hindu devotees and even others to witness the ancient culture and traditions.

It is set in a sort of domestic jungle....the so-called sarpakaavu, that was a part of most family residences, and where nature was left untouched for the nagadevatas to live undisturbed and bless the family. The modern nuclear family systems have destroyed most sarpakaavu of the olden days. The legend associated with this kaavu has helped it to flourish and the ritual of ‘uruli kamizhthu’, placing a pot upside down as an offering by childless couple who pray to the nagadevta for a child, is very popular. It is said that many people come back a second time with their child and when they open the pot, they will find a snake under it. This is a legend I heard throughout childhood, and the temple has a very special place in the hearts of all keralites. All believers can experience the charm of a well preserved yesteryear sarpakaavu, and other tourists can view the kaavu as an bioconservation measure that was built in to the very fabric of Kerala’s culture.
