Nothing disturbs you. But only a kind of peace of mind while going through the historical monuments.

This was a pit stop for us mid way along the backwater tour. They had lovely restrooms which were welcome and the church was pretty. Most of all, it gave us an opportunity to see a lot of kids returning home from school which was fun.

There are two things to remember about the Chavara Bhavan Shrine; one - you can only get to it by boat and, two, if you want action, then this is not the place for you. However, if you want peacefulness and serenity then this spiritual resort is a "must see" attraction. The highlight of the shrine is Kuriakose's preserved home, a rather small hut. It has a thatched roof of coconut leaves and a simple living space, which indicate his simple life. Just drink in the quiet surroundings and, if you want to, offer up a small prayer. Refreshments are available on site.

The First canonised male saint of India of catholic origin and the co-founder of CMI congregation is Fr. Kuriakose Elias Chavara. He was a social reformer and played a major role in educating the people of lower ranks of society and he also started the first printing press at Mannanam. He died at Koonammavu in 1871 AD and was buried there and his mortal remains were transferred to Mannanam. The Chavara Bhavan Shrine is constructed at his birth place which is about 6 Kms from Alleppey and a lot of devotees visit the shrine. The small hut where he was born is still maintained and various rituals and cultural events are being conducted at the Shrine.
