Shen Wan San is a very rich merchant during the end of the Mongol empire and the beginning of Ming Dynasty. Shen's residence in ZhouZhuang is still being preserved and entry is free, except for the 2nd floor which cost RMB10 per entry. It is worth a visit if you like history and wants a glimpse on how the rich of that era live their lives.

If you don't read Chinese, make sure you have a guide to tell you about the historical significance of the previous owner, and to translate the stories told on the bronze wall carving along the corridors of the house.

Perhaps because there was so much to take in but it seemed like this residence blended right in with the rest of the village. As we toured through it was quite amazing to learn the significance of the layout and each room. The history was equally impressive and was definitely a great stop along the tour.

The water village is awesome, but imagine being the chief family in the village. The house is very similar to all the other major family residences we visited in the area with the exception that outside this one is a beautiful water village. Go with a tour guide to help explain all the symbolism and other key facts.

like many places in China…. overcrowded. Interesting I imagine from a historic point of view, but you would need to really arrange a private time to visit. Not impossible, but needs contacts with the tourism beureau.
