We came here as we were in Kunshan looking at the possibility of moving to Kunshan. You get a real feel of a water town as it is still very authentic... & not commercial like Zhouzhuang.
65RMB to enter but you get to see all the little museums well worth the small fee.
I would certainly recommend coming here rather than other water towns..as there's more room to wander around without any hassle.

While "everyone" will tell you that zhouzhuang is the No. 1 Water Town in China, but haven visited both Zhouzhuang is far more touristy and just trying to sell you overpriced souvenirs. Jinxi has shops, restaurants and some souvenir shops, and is a lot less touristy and tacky.
If I was going to take my friends to just one of the Chinese water towns, it would be Jinxi and not zhouzhuang.

Fabulous half day wandering around Jinxi to experience a Chinese water town without the crowds or pressure to buy. We felt really welcome

Literally nothing to see here, the town gave me a bit desperate feelings.
There're a few karaoke and some local business with no customers, the nice thing about the place is the lake and the old architectures which have been preserved.

Nice to see the "old" China - very different to the tall high rises that appear everywhere else. Very nice to spend a few hours wandering around, people who live there still doing things the way things were done years ago. Plenty of little shops selling all sorts, you can take a boat ride - the guide will sing the whole time you're on it!,

There are probably few hundred ancient towns in China, and many of them are unknown, hidden and less developed., those seen in guidebooks are of course popular and thus crowded then more commercialized. Just visit one in your life time would be quite sufficient unless you go after for the historical heritage of a particular ancient town. For those nearby Shanghai, Jinxi and Zhujiajiao, 30km apart, are two recommended ancient towns for a day or two stay over. Both towns have some great, cozy, well-decorated hostels set up within a 100+ years old architecture from the Qing Dynasty. Ancient town + fresh brewed Americano = amazing!

Yes there are many water towns surrounding Shanghai - 19 at my last count - and this one does not disappoint boasting a long and rich history dating back to 770BC. It is quieter than some of the better known ones and well worth the 65Rmb entry fee - only payable if you enter via the main gate and want to see the museums. I would recommend you do as the museums are worth a visit - especially the 'Brick and Tile' museum. Sadly the Cultural Revolution Museum has been shut but there is a small amount of "Mao-morabilia' within the Zhangsheng Art Gallery. A spectacular time to visit would be when the lotus are flowering. On entry turn immediately left just beyond the Lotus Pool Temple to see the Water Tomb of Royal Concubine Chen (Song Period) - which alludes to the rich imperial history surrounding this village. Staying overnight is an option as there are a few hotels and a Youth Hostel on site.

We visited Jinxi as part of a tour. It is a water town on the Jinxi river near a fresh water lake. Commonly known as the Venice of China with boats providing the main form of transport. Do not eat there! There is no running water and only communal bathrooms. Washing of dishes, clothes and food is done in the river. We saw fish and a duck being prepared for lunch. Fortunately we ate in a near by restaurant that had modern amenities. However there was little effective air conditioning for a hot and humid day.

This is a quaint little Water town dating back to 1552. It has many ancient stone bridges and 236 waterways. There are winding canals, cobblestone alleyways, and sampans being propelled along the water by the woman oarspersons. Some of the buildings/houses seemed to have changed little over time, the rooms are tiny, and during the day are dimly lit as the elderly Chinese do not believe wasting electricity for light during the day.
A trip down the waterways by one of these sampans at a cost of ¥100 pp ($A22) is good value although the trip only takes about 20 minutes.
The town is situated within the Mingjingdang National Waterpark and it too is quite a pretty backdrop.
An interesting enough trip but probably would not go out of the way to visit as it is about 45k from Shanghai which took our coach about 45 minutes to reach the area.
