Lok Yeay Mao Statue is a giant 29 metre tall structure occupying a commanding spot on Bokor Mountain, at the beginning of Thansur Bokor Highland Resort. You can’t missed it.

According to info available, Lok Yeay Mao is the protector of the sea. Visitors would stop by to pay respects, pray for journey safety and protection.

I noticed that by the side of the giant statue there was a row of 12 animals, each with a small tin box in front.

I think the animals represent the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. One particular animal (the pig I think) has got a few cash notes stalked in front of its face whereas the rest were largely empty.

It was a cool day and a great spot for photos.

This was a very interesting, weird place to say the least. The highlight was definitely the monkeys on the way up, we got to feed them bananas through the windows of the minibus. We then saw a giant lady Buddha which was cool, an abandoned casino (mildly interesting) and quite a few old temples, along with a waterfall which was really nice. I went to a couple of squat toilets along the way too which is always nice.

I did give this a 4 star as a photographer and I found the whole area very interesting. But I am also appalled. Described as a national park the upper areas have been completely wrecked by greed selling out to the Chinese who have abandoned scores of half built concrete bunkers. I scratched my head in disgust. I can see the plan was to build some kind of thriving city in the clouds for rich Chinese, but really who would actually wanted to live there. Most of the upper area is dilapidated and run down, a complete mess, I did visit the old casino which has had some half hearted attempt to revamp into a hotel, and didnt bother going to look at the new casino. Extensive pagoda area and the views are stunning, although it was cloudy!

I really enjoyed the scooter ride up this amazing winding road to the top of this mountain. I stopped many places on the way. Old houses, temples, monuments, waterfalls, churches and amazing viewpoints to find up past the church. A definite must do in Kampot I really enjoyed my day.

Bokor Hill has been taken over by the chinese. What had the old casino and temple has now been transformed. There is a huge modern casino, apartment blocks, and huge empty carparks. Not like Cambodia at all. A pity to spoil the place.

Bokor Mountain is in the Bokor National Park and can be accessed by following the twisty road up through the park.

It is recommended to hire a motorbike as yours can be expensive, plus driving yourself gives you the freedom to explore at your leisure.

Bokor mountain used to be a fascinating, eerie and historic place, difficult to reach but very satisfying to visit. It's tragic to see what casino money has been allowed to do to this place. A few old buildings remain, but they now co-exist with ghastly new apartment developments and what looks like a huge, empty aircraft hangar, completely unsympathetic to the feel of the place.

Perhaps most disappointing of all, the old casino has been "renovated" and re-opened as a $300+ per night hotel, and is now off-limits to non-guests.

There are still some great views from the top of the hill, as long as you face away from the new work.

If you have ever questioned the value of proper town planning and heritage protection policies, come visit Bokor mountain and see what happens when there aren't any.

We are travelling with our 18 & 23 year old sons who were each on their own motor bikes and my husband with me on the back of another bike. We took a trip out to Bokor for the day and were surprised to see the quality of the road all the way up the mountain. My eldest son hadn't really ridden a motorbike before and I'm a novice on the back but it's such an easy ride and really pleasant. Go during the week as weekends everywhere in Cambodia are more hectic. Take a long sleeve top too as about halfway up it can become quite cool which was a surprise. There isn't a huge amount to see and not really much in the way of food unless your part of a large Chinese tour so take snacks if you plan to just cruise along. There is a place you can get fuel near the top thankfully as we got low due to not planning well, ha! A really nice day out.

Ghost town. A very strange place, you see houses that are completely empty. Pristine.
You need a scooter or tuk tuk to get between the various buildings in the large national park

I rented a scooter. From Kampot it’s about 10 to 20 minutes to the entrance of the park on National Road 3. There is a huge gate saying that you are entering the park.
From the entrance to the top it’s about an hour.

You can buy food and drinks at the big Buddha statue and at the waterfall. However, if you wanna save some money pack something before you go up.

Unlike mentioned in another review, a full tank of gas (about 4 liters) got me up and down the Mountain without a problem. Still had half a tank left when I got back.

Overall the whole trip took me about 5 hours (hung around at several spots for quite some time).

I generally recommend this park, it’s a gorgeous and fun scooter ride up and down the Mountain (Road is perfectly paved). Just make sure it isn’t too cloudy because the view up there might be limited otherwise.
