Hidden in the Arts and Crafts District in Gatliburg, is an older, unique house/gallery of an artist who should have his works displayed in every major gallery in the world. His use of negative-space, and his ability to capture the most haunting of eyes, surpasses many of the exalted Art Masters. His work is a must see.

We recently visited the gallery in Gatlinburg. It's truly a must stop. To have the privilege to walk back in time in Paul and Katie's gallery was the highlight of our Gatlinburg trip. No joke, we talked about it most of the way home. Several years back we adopted "Lidle Cumberland" and she hangs proudly in our home. This trip we adopted "Aunt Emily". I use the term adopted because these paintings tell a story, each with it's own history. The paintings themselves are AMAZING and then you learn the story behind it and it becomes personal. God has blessed Paul and Katie not only with an incredible talent and such kindness, they generously give back to the local area. They have found the answer that most of us are looking for, find your passion, share it with others and give back. Thank you Paul and Katie!!!

When in Gatlinburg, TN visit the Paul Murray Gallery if you want to see one-of-a-kind art. We were so impressed with his work and having met he and his wife we see the passion and the love for all that is in the area. We loved seeing Red and Wilma (there on Saturdays 11-4pm). They speak for themselves, you just have to meet the wonderful couple. Located on the ARTS AND CRAFTS TRAIL.

I had looked up this gallery before taking our trip and was exciting to see what they had to offer (originals, prints, etc). When we arrived they had signage outside that said they were no longer allowing visitors and would allow appts only. There was also something about selling the gallery so it looks like they are moving on. Too bad - loved the website!

My friend and I stopped by this store as we were exploring the arts and crafts loop. The outside of the shop is quaint and very inviting. There was a man sitting on the front porch. As I started up the stairs, I gave him a very friendly hello. He just stared at me and didn't speak. My friend and I went on into the gallery and started looking around. There was no one inside to great us. I noticed a picture of an old pick-up truck, decorated for fall. It was advertising an upcoming festival. I took a quick snapshot of it, so I could retain the date information from the advertisement. Just as I was putting my phone back in my pocket, a very rude woman came down the stairs and said, "Oh you are taking photographs!" I replied, yes of the advertisement. She stated, "You know you can't take pictures of the art work, right?!!" I said, No I was not aware. She continued to tell me it was an infringement of copywrite laws. Again, I told her I was unaware. She said, Well there is a sign on the door. I hadn't noticed the sign. She said, "You are stealing from the artists and it is against to law!" There was nothing in that shop that I would have hung in an outhouse. I certainly didn't intend to steal anything. I simply took a photo of an advertisement. I didn't intend to do something illegal or harm anyone. Don't bother stopping here.

I thank you for the understanding of how you perceived my reaction to you taking pictures in the art gallery. I thank you for the opportunity to get feed back on how people hear what I say, and I will consciously try to improve on that. I am sorry that we did not get the chance to give you a good memory to go home with. I was trying to make you aware that photographs are not condoned in an art gallery. What you were taking a picture of was an 8' x 4' original creation by PAUL Murray, of his photo of his hand made straw truck. It was on display beside many other original creations of his. I thought I had approached the situation with a cheerful and but authoritative voice as to not hurt your feelings, then I cheerfully made you aware of why there was concern, I.e. copyright, about the possibility of people printing their own copies instead of buying the art. Piracy has devastated both the music and film industry of today. You might not have been aware of the multiple signs inside and outside, asking for no photos. Paul & I are very aware & try not to intimidate anyone at any time. Wether it's when we are an art gallery where folks may "feel out of water" sort of speek, (not knowing much about the art world, the terms etc) We don't want to intimidate the people we meet while researching in the isolated areas of APpalachia either, and we have made many mtn friends over 40 yrs. Since it is our practice to try to make every experience with us personally, and visits to our gallery, not just good, but a great experience. Please come again to see what the true experience in the PAUL Murray Gallery is really like. Paul Murray and KatiJane Murray

My 15 year old daughter is an artist. While driving by she happened to notice a beautiful piece of art on the side of the house on Glades Road. So we stopped in and we were amazed by the quality of the art work. Amazed is probably an understatement... At some point while walking through the house, my wife and I realized our daughter was crying. She couldn't even explain why, I think she was just overwhelmed by the shear quality of the work that was presented.
We were lucky enough to briefly speak with Paul, who also took the time to speak with my daughter which she truly appreciated, as did her mother and I. There was also a lady working there (I forgot your name, sorry!) that was very helpful. We also appreciate your taking the time to speak with us.
We did not purchase anything that first day, but after giving my daughter some time to think about it, she did decide on a beautiful piece that we purchased when we returned the next day. Paul was kind enough to sign this piece while we were there, he also did my daughter the amazing gift of looking at a piece of my her artwork and providing some brief feedback. This was truly impressive as I'm sure he gets asked for this all the time and I'm sure can be very frustrating. So as a father I would like to THANK YOU for doing that for my daughter. You have no idea how much that meant to her.
Anyone who appreciates fine art needs to make this a must visit location. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent artist with a large variety of art for sale. Any one of his subjects could have been my Appalachian relatives! Paul's attention to detail is amazing!

You first step back in time to an old 1800's home on a beautifully wooded lot. Paul's wife greeted us and took us piece by piece around the gallery describing the history of the pieces and the techniques used to create them. The glow she had while describing her husbands trade was amazing in and of itself. My wife and I settled on a couple of great numbered prints that captures some of the characters of the Appalachian area. Her husband, Paul comes in and she convinces him to sign our pieces. The place, the art, the stories and hospitality were all amazing. This is definitely a MUST do on your next trip to Gatlinburg!

We got to meet both Paul and his wife - it was far and away the high point in our day of visiting the Arts and Crafts Loop. They are amazing people, and the art work belongs in major museums and galleries - the quality and the emotional impact is fantastic. My wife and I felt this was like the works of the Wyeths, which we feel is quite a compliment.
Do not be put off by the outer appearance of the gallery - Murray treasures simplicity.
We left feeling very fortunate to have made this the last visit of our day, and more puzzled than ever by an art scene where a painting of red paint on red paint can fetch $41 million, while an artist of Murray's enormous talent has trouble being recognized.

Hard to find words to explain all the emotions I feel when I enter this gallery. From the yard , it starts like a trip back in time. Your eyes can't take it all in. So much detail. Can't help wondering what the artist is like. Obviously he loves the simple life, Appalachian people, . I met his sweet wife Katie Jane and learned that each piece of work has a story to tell, that Paul captures the soul of all his subjects. And you can feel it as you look , but let me warn you, in a good way. You need time! Each painting is so detailed, that I looked a very long time in disbelief at the intricate details. Don't miss this! Paul and Katie Jane will touch your heart.
