Beautiful, Intriguing Natural Landscapes. NPS charging full fee for way less than 100%
Oct 2021
Probably best experienced any other season than summer (you'll roast). This park has
incredible landscape contrasts that photographers would love. It's kid and people friends as you can wander over the dunes to your heart's content. Go just a little ways and you'll be all alone. In spring, the creek that runs along the dune field is an amazing anomaly. The bigger mountains are accessible by trails for experienced hikers / climbers.
Now for the bad news. The National Park Service has chosen to stay closed even though everyone else is open. So, the museum that helps you understand the dune field is closed. They do have a couple silly displays wrapped in plastic in the gift store. Additionally, the interpretive signs everywhere outside are in horrible disrepair - faded and useless. AND. the Park Service is charging you full fee even though the museum and some facilities are closed.

Fun Park!
Oct 2021
This was a fun day of exploring on the sand dunes. We hiked up one of the first dunes in the park. Great exercise and great views!

Unique national park experience
Oct 2021
Very fun, unique national park! Our kids really enjoyed sledding/boarding the sand dunes. October was a perfect time to visit because the sand wasn't too hot. We found the visitor center disappointing with very few displays. Remember to rent your sleds outside of the park.

great National Park
Oct 2021
One of the last National Parks for me to visit. WOW. I had seen pictures but until you are standing on top of the dunes you have no idea. We took my 86 year old father and reserved a dune chair for him. Holy workout. The Park Rangers had warned us but really we had no idea how hard it would be. Thankfully, my husband is smart and we put a strap on the front so one of us could pull and one push. We were able to get him to the top of the first set of mini dunes. He loved it and his smile made the effort worth it. We then took a lunch break in the picnic area near by the main parking lot. Very nice area. Tables, a place to park next to your table. Bathrooms close by. Great sun/shade. We left my father and dog there and my husband and I went back to hike. We would have loved to make it to Star Dune but after the morning workout there was no way. We hiked for about three hours and called it a day. Going out takes four times coming back. We didn't rent board or anything. Gives us a reason to come back. Rent a board and hike to Star Dune. Highly worth your time. The visitor center was following all the COVID protocols. They do close a bit early around 4 to 4:30pm. I am grateful for the Dune chair. Without it my father would have not been able to get out of the parking lot. Camp grounds looked cool and were completely booked. I can't imagine coming in summer. We got warm in the fall. I am sure it is an oven in the summer. We stayed in Alamosa at an AirBnB and it wasn't a difficult trip.

Awesome!

A huge sand dune as a foreground to a mountain is a sight to see! The vistas were just beautiful. You can park close to the dune and, as age and health permits, do a multitude of activities. We saw sand boarders and skiers, picnicers and sunbathers..

Loved it
Sep 2021
It's out of the way, although once you're there, the trip is worth it. The sand dunes are huge - they do not disappoint. You're free to walk up them (as much as your legs will let you); bring water. The hiking trails are great too -- whether you're looking at the dunes or the Rocky Mountain setting, the scenery is gorgeous. Everything is litter-free. Great place for relaxing. You can see more than sand, so allow some hiking time to enjoy all the nature.

Worth the trip!
Sep 2021
Loved this stop. Worth the drive out there and a great outdoor activity. We went in the fall so wasn't too hot or cold starting around 11am. We had an SUV so the drive up to the Sand Pit area was doable. Plenty of trails to explore here, make sure the shoes you're wearing are appropriate for hiking in sand and sandy soil!

Sand is hard to hike in
Sep 2021
The walk to the first set of dunes was harder than I had envisioned. I don't even want to think about the effort that would be required to get to the highest, distant dune! We didn't rent sand boards and for watching others we think we made a good decision.

Definitely worth the effort to get here
Sep 2021
I agree with all the positive reviews previously posted. This place is unique, amazing, spectacular, & incredible. If you choose to go up on the dunes (I recommend), START EARLY before it gets hot, wear boots & long pants to keep the sand out of your shoes, GO SLOW- PACE YOURSELF, and don't take your dog. The sand is too hot on paws. Then also enjoy the mountain hiking trails that are not on the dunes. We were here in September 2021 so no water in the "creek". I can't imagine such a phenomenon! The campground within the national park is beautiful but we stayed at the Oasis campground just outside of the park. Do not be in a hurry when you visit here and know that it gets very hot mid-day. But early mornings & evenings are well worth the logistical effort to be here.

Sand with no shore
Sep 2021 • Couples
This was a beautiful park! In the summer, go early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day, especially if you bring a dog. Don’t want to burn their paws! We started about 830/900. It started getting hot on our trip down from High Dune. We had been in Colorado for a week by this point but were both pretty short of breath l walking up to the top. One step forward, half a step back! It was beautiful and serene. At the tops of the dunes was a remarkable quiet and calmness. In the parking lot there are sprayers to rinse off your feet. I didn’t want to lug around a sled up the hills, but it looked like a ton of fun, especially for kids! When we went there was no water at this point in the year.
