Beth Poliquin was our Kayak Guide for our day trip to Brule Lake In the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. She is not only a fabulous guide with great knowledge of the area but she possesses the most important skill a Guide could have...she listens to the client and calls you to ascertain what it is you are looking for in a trip and then she designs the trip to match your experience and desires. She is an ACA Certified Kayak Instructor and Wilderness First Aid Certified so you can learn skills from her and just enjoy the Wilderness while she takes care is keeping you safe. With an easy going personality she is fun to spend the day with. Our all day trip she lead was stellar in every way. The Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply store itself is the crown jewel of outdoor gear stores in the area with a stock of great gear tailored to Lake superior and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness activities. Great Prices and a friendly and knowledgeable staff led by owner and founder Jack Stone. A+ all around!

Thank you George. Your experience is what we strive towards. I know i am biased but I do think the world of our guides and staff. We train hard to bring people like you an experience you will think about in the dead of winter. Beth is fabulous and we have two other ACA instructors among our guide staff so we can cover all bases.
Stop in next time you are in the area. I understand you want a winter adventure also. Well, we can do that.
Thanks again
Jack

My husband, teenage son and I did three tours with stone harbor this weekend and had a blast. We kayaked Lake Superior, hiked the superior national trail, and stand-up paddleboarded. The guides made us feel very safe and helped us get confident in our skills. The views were amazing. We are definitely coming back to do a boundary waters tour next time.

I am so glad to hear you had a great time and yes, our guides are exceptional....can I say that? They work hard to keep up their skills and we try hard in these trying times to keep our customer service at a high level. Please come and see us again.

Chris took us out on a half day kayak trip to Two Island Lake. Great trip, total pro, very good equipment. Safety well maintained, good experience for all levels of ability. Weather forced an Inland lake experience and we loved it. Also the shop is fantastic.

wen't there to rent 2 kayak's to go out on lake superier. were told they do not allow people to go out on the lake alone. were from out of state and did not know. but very nice emp. explained they had a sunset trip from 5pm to 8pm. so we signed up for that.it was very windy that day ,so when we got there they said we would have to go to a inland lake instead. i thought a 3 hour trip meant 3 hrs on lake, not 1 hr to pack up and drive out to lake and then spend more time explaining how to kayak to the other people who have never gone. while we have our own kayaks of our own at home we had to wait for everyone else. with putting the boats back and driving back we maybe spent a hour on the lake.we didn't even have enough time to go around the lake.we stopped at sawtooth outfitters in tofte and did another trip and had a much better time. more time on water and the guide was a lot more fun. you could rent 2 kayaks at state park for 4 hrs for 30 dollars and be on the lake for 4 hrs. or spend 130 dollars for 1 hr at stone harbor. did not see sunset either.

I am sorry you had a lousy time with our trip. First, let me explain our policy on paddling on the big lake. The water temp no matter what time of the year is probably around 40 degrees. We outfit you in a wet suit and we supply a guide who, if you were to tip over, is trained to get you out of that water within one minute of reaching you in the water. You may be experienced but we do not know that regardless of what you may tell us. If you have ACA or BCU or equivalent training, we will allow you to rent a kayak for the big lake but my risk management and liability insurance will not allow us to do it any other way. And yes, when the lake gets rough we do go inland but the instruction we give before we take you out is. In our mind, imperative for your safety. And yes, driving to an inland lake takes time.
I am glad you were able to get a great tour from Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte. They are good people and have a good guide. Personally, I think our guides are a lot of fun, but then I am somewhat biased.
Please try us again. If you do not have ACA assessments, I have 4 ACA instructors on staff that can take care of that for you.
All the best
Jack

Fantastic experience we had. We were booked for a canoe and John , who is extremely knowledgeable, advised we take kayaks due to the wind, and that was a great recommendation.
After a 45 minute drive , it didn't take long before we were in the water to enjoy Clearwater Lake , all to ourselves. It's was stunning. John was a very interesting and great tour guide. We portaged for lunch and saw two bad eagles fighting over the lake. The paddle trip was very enjoyable, tough at times against the wind but we would do this again , handsdown
Thank you John from Ross and Faith

Stone Harbor was great to work with in renting cross country skis for the day. They were well informed about snow conditions locally, and were helpful in finding the right skis. They have a great selection of books, maps, gear and everything you could possibly want for your outdoor adventures!

My son and I went fly fishing with their guide. He was a spectacular guide. He taught us the principles of fly fishing and then took us out fly fishing. We had a great time. Stone Harbor is a great business. They know what they are doing and I would recommend them over and over. I am visiting Grand Marais this summer and I plan to visit them again.

Thanks for the kind words and we hope to see you again soon. Just to give you a heads up, we are not going to be doing fly fishing guided tours this summer due to the virus. Fishing and rock climbing are two activities where we feel we cannot protect our participants or our staff from the virus due to their close proximity. But we can direct you to great spots and hopefully by the time you come in our fishing area will be again fully stocked. The supply chain is a little out of whack. But do stop in and say hello. We love seeing our travelers when they come through.

3 hours on Lake Superior with excellent guide. Great experience to see the shoreline, cliffs and harbor while kayaking the deep rolling water. Complete with sea kayak, wet suit, life vest and windbreakers. Thorough pre-trip lesson on safely. Only a few minutes of actual instruction need as kayak is responsive and paddling comes naturally. Great way to get away from the tourist traffic. I'm age 70 and it was a breeze.

Glad we could accommodate you with great weather and water. I hope you can continue to enjoy kayaking for many years to come. When you get to be our age, I am 71, it is important to find activities we are comfortable with. The nice thing about kayaking is that you can go at your own pace. I for one hope to enjoy the water for a long time. Maybe next time I can join your group.

Really enjoyed our day trip guided by Colin on Clearwater Lake. Just the right amount of paddling on a gorgeous day. Everything was arranged in advance and our guide even got me a water bottle when I lost mine. Would definitely book a trip again with Stone Harbor!

I am so glad you had a great time. Clearwater is a great lake for a day trip. As the name implies, it is a beautiful clear lake with stunning palisades. And in talking to Collin, it appears he had a great time with your group as well. Next time bring your passport and we will take you across the border into Canada for a kayak tour in a sheltered Lake Superior bay.
Thanks for the nice comments

Do you offer guided fly fishing trips — half or full day?
Written June 13, 2019
Yes we most certainly do. The best way to answer this is to have you go to our web site. That will give you all the information and you will find a link where you can book your tour on line. If you have additional questions give us a call at 218-387-3136. Thanks for contacting us and we will see you soon. I apologize but TripAdvisor does not allow website links or I would post it here.

what are the costs of the half day and full day kayak trips? what is included and what is not.
Written February 5, 2018
That is a question we have been kicking around at the store. Right now on our web site we list $65 for half day and $150 for a full day. We believe there will be an increase this summer but we have not done anything yet. Probably in the range or $75 and $175 but we have made no decisions yet. We are going to have a new full day trip across the border to the new Canadian Conservatory area at Little Trout Bay on Lake
Superior. No cost has been put on that as of yet either. We are working on work permits etc to get that ready to go. Price on that will be in the range of $200 to $225. If you want to book anything thirds early we would honor the price on the web site. You can go to our web site or Facebook page and hit the book it now button. Or call us at 218-3874-3136. My direct number is 218-387-3572.
