I am sorry you had a lousy time with our trip. First, let me explain our policy on paddling on the big lake. The water temp no matter what time of the year is probably around 40 degrees. We outfit you in a wet suit and we supply a guide who, if you were to tip over, is trained to get you out of that water within one minute of reaching you in the water. You may be experienced but we do not know that regardless of what you may tell us. If you have ACA or BCU or equivalent training, we will allow you to rent a kayak for the big lake but my risk management and liability insurance will not allow us to do it any other way. And yes, when the lake gets rough we do go inland but the instruction we give before we take you out is. In our mind, imperative for your safety. And yes, driving to an inland lake takes time. I am glad you were able to get a great tour from Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte. They are good people and have a good guide. Personally, I think our guides are a lot of fun, but then I am somewhat biased. Please try us again. If you do not have ACA assessments, I have 4 ACA instructors on staff that can take care of that for you. All the best Jack

Thanks for the kind words and we hope to see you again soon. Just to give you a heads up, we are not going to be doing fly fishing guided tours this summer due to the virus. Fishing and rock climbing are two activities where we feel we cannot protect our participants or our staff from the virus due to their close proximity. But we can direct you to great spots and hopefully by the time you come in our fishing area will be again fully stocked. The supply chain is a little out of whack. But do stop in and say hello. We love seeing our travelers when they come through.

Glad we could accommodate you with great weather and water. I hope you can continue to enjoy kayaking for many years to come. When you get to be our age, I am 71, it is important to find activities we are comfortable with. The nice thing about kayaking is that you can go at your own pace. I am so glad you had a great time. Clearwater is a great lake for a day trip. As the name implies, it is a beautiful clear lake with stunning palisades. And in talking to Collin, it appears he had a great time with your group as well. Thank you for the kind words. I also read the review you left a the store and it is gratifying to me as the owner to see the quality of our guides appreciated. All of our guides, in my mind, go above and beyond what is called for and Jen and Beth are great examples of this. I am so glad they met and exceeded your expectations. Not sure about things costing more here as our tour prices are at the lower part of the scale in this area and as far as merchandise in the store, our prices are the same as you will find in any of the stores in large cities. Most of our suppliers mark their product's MSRP and we cannot deviate from those prices. There is a misconception that our little town's prices are higher than other places. I cannot speak for other stores in Grand Marais, only Stone Harbor but our prices on products should be the same as REI. LL Bean or any other quality outdoor shop. We do the same as others by discounting outdated stock in our clearance area.
