I am sorry you had a lousy time with our trip. First, let me explain our policy on paddling on the big lake. The water temp no matter what time of the year is probably around 40 degrees. We outfit you in a wet suit and we supply a guide who, if you were to tip over, is trained to get you out of that water within one minute of reaching you in the water. You may be experienced but we do not know that regardless of what you may tell us. If you have ACA or BCU or equivalent training, we will allow you to rent a kayak for the big lake but my risk management and liability insurance will not allow us to do it any other way. And yes, when the lake gets rough we do go inland but the instruction we give before we take you out is. In our mind, imperative for your safety. And yes, driving to an inland lake takes time. I am glad you were able to get a great tour from Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte. They are good people and have a good guide. Personally, I think our guides are a lot of fun, but then I am somewhat biased. Please try us again. If you do not have ACA assessments, I have 4 ACA instructors on staff that can take care of that for you. All the best Jack

I recently took a weekend trip to Grand Marais with my 12 year old. I didn’t know the area well so was really excited to find that Stone Harbor offers very affordable guided hikes. Beth was our tour guide and did an amazing job picking a route that was tailored to our

Beth does a wonderful job. What is really great is that she has set the bar very high for the whole staff. I love hearing from guests like you that have had great experiences. What has been great is that as our guides gain more experience they pass that on to the rest of the staff which makes everyone better. Do come back this winter to do some cross country skiing. It will be lots of fun. Jack

The fog kept us from kayaking Lake Superior but our adventure on Twin Island Lake was awesome. Our guide, Hunter, was amazing. He made it fun and memorable for our family. Beautiful lake, great memories.

We have to do that from time to time when the big lake doesn’t cooperate. In our minds we feel that kayaking on our inland lakes can actually be more interesting than Lake Superior. On Lake Superior the experience is a feeling of just how small and powerless you are on this huge expanse of water. On the inland lakes you can relax as the water is warmer and generally calmer. But in my mind you have the advantage of seeing more wildlife and in some cases less people in you vicinity. It is all a matter of perspective. Most importantly is that you had a great time with Hunter. We work hard to keep our guide skills honed so you can relax and know you are in good hands. Come back and see us again. Jack Stone

My mom and I had a great time kayaking on Two Island Lake with our tour guide Chris! He is very knowledgeable of the area and was fun to be around. Transportation to and from the lake was easy. We also had beautiful weather too!

This is such a great time of the year to take one of these tours. The weather is cool, the bugs are gone..well, maybe not gone but they aren't like they are in June. But I am so glad you enjoyed yourself. Two Island is one of our "go to" lakes when we don't go out on the big lake. In a lot of respects it is better due to the lack of people and better chances of seeing more wildlife. Come on back again and we will take you to another of our favorites. All the best Jack

I was excited to find an outfitter willing to rent us a Kevlar canoe for our Isle Royale trip. When an injury ended our trip earlier than expected, Jen came on her day off to pick us up from the ferry dock in Grand Portage. She drove us back to our car in Grand Marais and

I was sorry to hear of your mishap. Stuff happens and it was above and beyond your control. Jen is special and I know she took ownership and a special interest in your trip soI wasn’t surprised when I got out of my meeting and found out she was heading to Grand Portage. Hopefully, next time you will be able to spend your whole vacation on Isle Royale and we look forward to seeing you again. Jack
