- John BSutton-on-Sea, United Kingdom329 contributionsAwesome Glacier National ParkFirst Time we've driven the " Going to the Sun" road, tried once before and it was shut but boy it was an awesome drive. Mountain after Mountain and waterfalls too. Logan Pass has gift shops and information but in spite of being the wrong time of year to see wildlife its one of the best experiences we've had in the U.S.A.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 8, 2023
- RGCGIllinois136 contributionsFantastic National Park Second Only To AlaskaWe visited in Sept 2023 after Labor Day. You can drive through the park without a permit at this point. Traffic was on the heavy side and parking can be an issue in certain spots. The views were outstanding and only second to Alaska. We enjoyed many of the hiking trails in different areas of the park. Scenery is simply breathtaking. We took two boat rides while at GNP and both were very nice. On our final day there 9/20 we got to see the first snow hit the peaks. This was a top 5 trip for us. Would love to come back some day.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 26, 2023
- Kevin BMount Juliet, Tennessee4,204 contributionsSimply beautiful! It's hard to put into words the amount of beauty that is contained within this park. My wife and I were lucky to be able to come here late last July and it was truly one of the best places we've ever visited. We stayed at a fantastic B&B in Columbia Falls and it was an easy drive from there to the park (only about 20 minutes). We spent 2 days in the park as we were on a road trip and we didn't have vehicle reservations for the first morning, so we decided to drive along the southern edge of the park and then up the eastern edge to enter at the St. Mary's area. This was very fun and the whole drive was very scenic, so I definitely recommend that if you miss out on reservations. The advantage was that we were driving back to our hotel when we got to the Going to the Sun Road, so it was a nice way to make sure we still had time to find a place for dinner after the park. St. Mary is a beautiful area and it's so very picturesque. We did a short hike to Virginia Falls and that was very fun, though it's mostly exposed, so make sure you have good sun protection on a hot summer day. We loved being able to see all the gorgeous sites along the Going to the Sun road and it's truly a drive that you have to experience once in your life. We also had the good fortune to find a parking spot near the Avalanche Lake Trail (very, very popular, so make sure you're here early) and this was one of our favorite hikes that we've ever done; the spectacular view of Avalanche Lake is truly worth the 5-6 mile roundtrip hike. We realized later that we could have spent our entire vacation exploring Glacier National Park and it's 100% a place that we will visit again in the future. It's just the best!Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 6, 2024
- Brinda RajivDubai, United Arab Emirates51 contributionsMust visit placeBeautiful Hiking experience. Amazing hiking and sometime it gets boring with same view but ultimately when you reach the final point it is like having reached another world with turquoise colored lakes, lush greenery, snow capped mountains. The weather has been very good and best for hiking.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 1, 2024
- mozzavella198 contributionsGlaciers are near gone. This was one of the places that made me want to come to the USA. I did not have the opportunity to drive through the Going to the Sun road as it was still closed due to the season. We started at the West Entrance, the vista was fantastic, loved the Mountains. Did some walks, came across Deer, did not see any Bears. Toilets are located along the road with rest areas. The next day was the East Entrance. The Visitor centre was closed. This side of the Park was even better. I would highly recommend going here if nearby on vacation. It took me 20 years to get here, shame the Glaciers are nearly gone.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 29, 2024
- Jenny MAnkeny, Iowa483 contributionsExcellentWhat a fantastic park. You can hike, ride your bike, take a tour and even stay (camp or inn) in the park. Logan pass has snow and you can only walk 1.5 miles on the Hidden Lake trail due to bears. Lots of lakes, mountains and waterfalls to see. Recommend driving on going to the Sun road from East side, no need for reservations and less people.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 11, 2024
- OLIVER L4 contributionsGreat Park but CrowdedBeautiful and amazing area. Lots of options available for touring or hiking. Unfortunately, it was very smoky from forest fires outside the park, the mountain viewing was affected. Parking at most stops is very limited. It may be best to take the park shuttles but be prepared for waits. We drove the Going to the Sun Road twice and still missed a few spots because of no parking available. Be aware of the restricted access pass system when planning.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 28, 2024
- Joe H3 contributionsGNP is awesomeAmazing place. We home based outside of whitefish and drove the west side first, hiked unbelievable trails like avalanche lake and Hi Line trail, but couldn’t get on Going To The Sun Road from the west, so we drove around Glacier, Rt. 89 to Chief Mountain highway to Waterton, Ca. What a great road trip!!! Drove back took and used the east entrance to drive GTTSR. What a beautiful place.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 4, 2024
- KathleenBWPittsburgh, Pennsylvania43 contributionsGo-To-The-Sun Road vehicle pass AdviceGlacier NP is a breathtaking park. I highly recommend the Grinnell Glacier trail (it is THE BEST). Our family of four adults also enjoyed Avalanche Lake trail, Hidden Lake Trail, and Highline trail--all highlights of GNP. Grinnell Glacier Trail (park at Many Glacier Hotel) is THE premier hike. If you can only do one hike, do Grinnell Glacier. Vehicle pass registration Advice for Going To The Sun Road: To obtain a vehicle pass for Going to the Sun Road and for Many Glacier area, I suggest logging into recreation.gov at 7:01 pm. Do not login in earlier than 7pm because you will most likely need to "refresh" the registration page and encounter a delay. So, if you login in at recreation.gov at 7:01 and submit your request for a vehicle pass for the following day, your chances of successfully obtaining a pass are very high. I got a pass everyday I requested one (usually by 7:05 --7:09 pm the night before) and was told there were 550 -- 1,000 passes remaining. I was granted a pass 3 times and 4th day I did not need one because we got on Going To The Sun Road before 6:00 am. We visited GNP August 22 -- 27, 2024. Also, it is SO worth the 2 hour 45 minute trip from Whitefish to Many Glacier to hike the Grinnell Glacier (from Many Glacier parking lot). But don't forget your vehicle registration pass for Many Glacier area in addition to GTTS Road registration pass, unless you enter GTTS Rd before 6am, then you only need the Many Glacier area pass.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 5, 2024
- 4000f00terBridgewater, Massachusetts44 contributionsOne of our favorite national parks.Spent eight days camping at St. Mary’s campground in the park. Hiked all the most popular trails in the park wit numerous wildlife sightings. Two grizzly moms with cubs, bull and cow moose, deer and mountain goats. Tips. Get up at 5, eat breakfast at the trailheads you plan on hiking by 6 if you want a parking spot and cess congestion.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 6, 2024

There is no better way to view the dramatic 360 degree panoramic views of the National Park including the iconic Going to the Sun Road than on a bicycle. For cyclists wanting to take on this challenge, there is no better company than Trek Travel. Being on a bike allows one to stop at will and capture every spectacular scene on camera and even catch a glimpse of a bear! Admittedly, the climbs are a challenge. A little training is highly recommended. For East coasters, you will find the grades are for the most part gentle, but the duration of the climbs becomes the challenge. However, making it to the top of the iconic Logan Pass is extremely rewarding endeavor.
Trek travel makes everything but the pedaling painless. You literally do not have to think the entire week. Trek gives you an outstanding bicycle, with a perfect fit, gets you and your luggage from hotel to hotel seamlessly and just makes the whole trip a pleasure. Our group of 20 riders bonded quickly and we all had an amazing time on and off the bike. The entire trip provides 5 days of riding and for more aggressive riders, 5 mountain climbs (warning, 2 big climbs are on day 1). The last climb of the week is the most difficult, but several of the climbs are optional with no pressure to skip them if you want. And of course, they will allow riders in the van at any point so no need for stress. This is our second Trek Travel trip and they are just an outstanding company. Props to our amazing guides Amy, Kelty and Jacob!!

Amazing park. Extremely large with tons to see and do -- I highly recommend doing some homework and planning in advance. We stayed near the West entrance and didn't fully appreciate just how long it took to get to some of the points on the East side (e.g., Many Glacier).

In our one week trip to Montana, we had more fun outside of the Glacier National Park. We had the $35 park pass, but found out we also needed a $2 pass to go on Going To The Sun Road. All computer generated passes were gone in 15 seconds when they became available at 8 AM. Really disappointed to fly here from South Carolina. We have decided to avoid large volume national parks in the future. Not worth it. However Montana area surrounding the park was phenomenal and there were very few people to contend with. We finally got in to GTTS Rd after 5 PM, but that was no big deal. We actually liked the Two Medicine area better.

Phenomenal and protected - so clean, vast and well managed, we absolutely loved the Road to the Sun and hikes we did. We did the road twice. Steep, narrow, and all that, but we were in a big pickup and did just fine. Many great places to stop and ogle. Driver needs to focus on the road... Early is best! Many many people want to hike Logan Pass, and by 7 am the parking lot was completely full with people waiting! We went on the road twice for the sunrise! Hike at Lake Mary is wonderful - but with crowds - early is better. Take water and first aid supplies and a wrap. It was windy one day, and got cloudy and temp dropped. This is simply an experience not to be missed.

Acquiring a pass to Going to the Sun Road is impossible!!! And we only have two days before our trip starting to try our luck which added a lot of stress to us. We finally gave it up and cancelled our trip to Glacier NP. As the result we had to forfeit the deposit of 40% of the hotel cost since the hotel enforced the policy of %40 of total cost penalty if the cancellation is within one week. The ticket system is a disgrace. It's a shame for letting people arrange travel and only to find out right before the trip starts or even after arriving on site that they cannot even enter the park. Is it so hard to offer longer time period in advance for people to know if they can or cannot get an entrance pass so that they can plan their trips accordingly?
This is tax payer paid national park, but as a tax payer, I don't feel that our needs and well being is taken into consideration when making ticketing policy like this. I have read tons of complains online regarding this issue. We always enjoyed going to national parks in the past and have never seen such huge out cry regarding a national park facility.

Visited in mid June Road to the Sun was closed at avalanche pass. We wanted to hike avalanche lake trail and trail of the cedars. Got there around seven way too late to find a parking spot up near those trail heads. Go early if wanting to park up there. Once it is full they shut the road down to incoming traffic too. If starting later go to the Fish Creek side and then return to the Trail of the Cedars later in the afternoon we went back around 3 and there was plenty of parking and plenty of time do the trails we wanted. Well worth the hike to see the sights. Avalanche lake trail took about two hours round trip with an eight and eleven year old. We also hiked along Lake McDonald very easy hiking Rocky Point Trail. Spent some time in Apgar as well cute little village.

Tough to write a negative review for Heaven on earth . It’s only paradise if you can get in . The website is not clear that you can get 2 dollar entrance reservation 48 hours in advance ,including your yearly or day pass .. well that’s ok the west entrance ranger says. just go to The east side and Many glaciers visitors center then take the Road to the Sun road at 5 pm ….
Ok fine , EXCEPT…!!!!!! That road is under construction , one lane gravel, 1 hour in…. And that’s fine EXCEPT….!!!! When you get to the entrance the rangers say ,sorry ,the lot is full ! Sorry …. What can we say ???, there’s lag time in communication from the east side to the west ,thanks a lot ! Sooo disappointing to waste 4hours that could have been in the park When you travel 1000s of miles you need a better explanation … luckily we rented a canoe from
an outfitters in the park …. That counts as a reservation and you can get in the park no problem . Either that or wake up at 5 am and get to the park before 6 am . You can go in , no problem . No passes needed !
Save time to drive back and forth on the road to the sun. You see totally different views . Take the Hidden lake hike at Logan but be prepared for snow even in July . You need good hiking shoes or walking stick !! Gorgeous views of hidden lake . Lots of wildlife :)
I tried to post a picture of the website that shows many glaciers road OPEN but TA won’t allow it …. It’s very poor communication on the website .. I will say , if you are an early bird it doesn’t really matter . By the way if you want to stay at McDonald lodge check for cancelations . They had one yesterday…. If you can be spontaneous it could work in your favor . Great huckleberry margeritas even for takeout ..

Beautiful park! So many trails to walk with beautiful views. Driving the Going to the Sun road is a treat in itself. Allow about an hour and a half to go from the far end of the park (Rising Sun) to the entrance at the end of the day. We found it was easier to find parking in the most popular destinations (Logan Pass) after 5 pm but you didn't have alot of time to hike the trails. At Hidden Lake outlook, it was worth it to continue on down towards Hidden Lake. It is a more rigorous trail and you definitely want bear spray and drinking water. The park is definitely a must see.

It's just the best!

Everyone needs to see this National park. Even after all the glaciers melt within the next 30 years, there is still so much beauty. The glaciers are only the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended). You will see sweeping views 360 degrees all around you everywhere you go. It’s hard to take a bad picture here! I would recommend staying in the park if you can, but make sure to get reservations way in advance (at least a year) as places fill up fast. There aren’t too many roads here so it’s relatively easy to see all the top spots in the park in one trip.

I must catch a plane in Missoula around dinner time. Is it feasible to get a one-day vehicle pass on a Monday, tour for part of the day, and get back to Missoula airport by 4:00 PM?
Written July 23, 2024
Hello Steve, my guess it is a long drive there to the West entrance. You would be rushing through the park, not getting to really see it. I'm from Aussie land so driving long distance is not much for me. Probably your biggest wait would be the car hire place they tend to be slow. Missoula is not much chop one or two good cafes. Good luck.

We were either looking to going to GNP or Yellowstone National Park. Is there a big difference between the two as far as a baby is concerned?

There are some wheelchair friendly short trails at GNP, so you can easily travel with the stroller. Same at Yellowstone. Happy travels!

In July, 2019 our family of four will be traveling by car from a family reunion in Helena, MT to Glacier National Park where we will stay for three nights. We will then need to drive back home to Southern Minnesota. We are hoping to see as much as possible at Glacier National Park in three days to include a river rafting experience. Any suggestions for which towns or area to stay and what routes to take through the park to see some awesome attractions?

I would suggest exploring Many Glacier, maybe even Two Medicene aside from the Logan Pass/St. Mary area as that will be crowded with everyone that visits the park deferring there with the West Side closure
