Music Lovers - Simple night life
Nov 2018 • Couples
If you’re looking for that Tennessee, blues, country style music bar this is it. Lay back, relaxed, rustic, and just plain awesome.

Order your typical simple cocktails, beer, or mix, enjoy your conversation and listen to some excellent live music. The staff and people are friendly. The band went on at 9pm and for an hour, took a 15 minute break and played again. The lead singer was fire on the harmonica. A hidden gem for those who love live music, and the simpler kinda of night life.

We did not eat there, but the atmosphere and music gets a top review.

Brooklyn Holiday

Bloody loved it in here. Just plain old typical Brooklyn bar. The staff and locals were so accommodating but if your looking for luxury forget it and that’s not taking anything away from the place. It’s got charm good beer and food and that’s why I love it.

Such a cute venue. Very small and family friendly. There's a nice little bar/restaurant next door that they own also. The people who work there treat you like a family friend.... so nice!

Feral Foster Rocks!
Aug 2015 • Couples
We loved this place. Wednesday nights are the time to go. The night we went they had five musical performances. A blues singer, Feral Foster, a duo from Los Angeles, a duo from Canada - amazing female lead singer who brought the house down and the last act of the evening who were just so so. We will plan future visits to Brooklyn so we're there on Wednesdays. The entertainment's free and they do pass the hat after each act. Feral Foster is amazing - great songwriter - unique and addictive singer. We bought his CD and play it often. Don't miss this great little spot.

Best Live Bluegrass, Folk, Blues - and classes!
Aug 2015 • Couples
We come here often for live music in this casual little Columbia Street joint on the edge of Red Hook, and are rarely disappointed. There's a joyous spirit to the intergenerational audience, a lively scene at the bar (serving an interesting variety of beers, coffees, and herbal teas), and their own tavern with small plates next door. Jalopy also offers classes for fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, singing, and clogging! This is a pulsing heart of NYC's folk scene.

If you are into arts, music and bars, forget Manhattan and go straight to Brooklyn, particularly in Jalopy Bar.

I spent two weeks in New York looking for decent bars with live music. I scouted also for nice sounding vintage guitars. The classic stores in Manhattan are too commercial now and have lost the glory of the old days. Until I bumped into a group of young artists and brought me to Brooklyn - specifically Jalopy. It is a fantastic bar. Not expensive compared to prices in Manhattan. Their bar is beside the theatre where you can listen to live performances in real acoustic setting. After having dinner and few drinks from the bar, we moved to the chapel-like theatre for the bluegrass performance. One can bring his or her favorite beer and can buy them inside every after performance. Hence, the audience really listens to and watch the live performance. That gives some respect to the performer. They only have one microphone for both vocals and guitar. No any electronic gadget. That's the real acoustic thing. The following day, I went back and check their stage as I was amused on their acoustic setup. They allowed me to check their setup. Then I bought a vintage hanging guitar under consignment from a german luthier. It is a 1941-Richter Parlor Guitar, duco painted with a nice setup. I would have bought more but I had baggage limitations going back to Philippines. The guitar was justifiably priced unlike the ones sold in Manhattan. Check their schedule of performance as there's a variety of them. Next time I visit New York, I will stay beside it.

Europeans: Come here to see the real America
Oct 2014 • Couples
Some people who don't really know what they're talking about, say we Americans don't have any culture. It's an understandable mistake - we have seen our local culture conquered by a monoculture that we exported globally. Come here to unwind from the city, surround yourself with relaxed people, and wail along with some excellently crooning singers, violinists, harmonica players...

Pretty much the best place to see music in Brooklyn
Dec 2014
This place is absolutely amazing. The people who run it are some of the kindest people I have run into within NYC. They have gorgeous vintage instruments for sale, amazing drinks and good food, along with fabulous musicians.
I love this place and highly recommend that out of town visitors make this their first Brooklyn spot. Arrive around 8-8:30 for a pre-show drink and then enjoy the music.
