Reaching from Court Street to the Brooklyn Promenade overlooking lower Manhattan with spectacular views this is an interesting street to walk down. There are a variety of shops and restaurants from diners, Chinese, Japanese, burgers, Thai to Polish. The shops are Mom and Pop affaires. Except for a Walgreens and CVS thee are no huge chain stores so the feeling is definitely local. My only sorrow is that in today's economy there are too many empty store fronts. Sadly, that is happening allover New York.

Montague Street has fine stores, as well as local shops. To really see Brooklyn Heights you want to walk on the various streets that intersect it. One of the special sights in all of New York City, is walking to the end of the street that brings you to the promenade that overlooks the harbor. With some special people in my life, I have blindfolded them for the last two blocks, so that when we got to the railing of the promenade, that were taken by the stunning view of lower Manhattan, New York Bay and the Brooklyn Bridge. I would say that this is the most special view in all of New York City. you can get there by either walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, and making a right after the bridge which in a few blocks will get you to Montague Street; or take 2,3,4,5 trains to the Borough Hall stop in Brooklyn, which is right off of Montague Street. If you come to New York City, the walk to the Promenade will give you a special experience, a view of Manhattan and the harbor that is unparalleled. Then you will have seen New York.

Hidden gems are Lassing and Hennins for great sandwiches and great clearance shoe store on same side of street as Verizon and Mac cosmetics. There is also Chipotle, Five Guys and Haagan Das Ice Cream. If you want a really delicious Vietamese pork sandwich go to Hanco's or for salad and pizza at Monty Q's. Every Bank is on that block including TD bank, CitiBank and Bank of America. Both Duane Read and CVS on Montague.

About 30 years ago, Montague Street was a cool strip of many independent stores including some art galleries. Now, more than half of the commercial spaces are filled with chain stores. It's a big disappointment. It could be a great street, and I'm surprised it's not, since it's basically the main commercial street of Brooklyn Heights. It should attract people, too--it's famous! Bob Dylan sang about it in Tangled up in Blue, for instance. Its heyday is definitely over, though. Brooklyn Heights is worth a visit, but there's nothing worth visiting on Montague Street unless you're hungry (there are some old-time restaurants on the street, but nothing spectacular), thirsty (Starbucks, anyone?), or need to go grocery shopping. At this point it's almost purely utilitarian. If only it were like Smith Street!

It's been years that Montague has become a little less local due to big banks, food franchise and real estate offices. I liked it before... when local businesses were the majority.

Our favorite place to visit while in Brooklyn! Filled with shops and fun restaurants. Out door eating, music on the streets, kids park and playing by the Promenade. A wonderful afternoon well spent .
