We explored the dock area and some of Red Hook in midwinter, walked through Coffey Park, eventually found an excellent coffee shop. It’s all in the midst of transition, we fear a lot of the original buildings, and characters, may be lost very soon. Well worth a visit.

First of all.. Bit of history . Red Hook has been part of the Town of Brooklyn since it was organized in the 1600s. It is named for the red clay soil and the point of land projecting into the Upper New York Bay. The village was settled by Dutch colonists of New Amsterdam in 1636, and named Roode Hoek. In Dutch, "Hoek" means "point" or "corner," and not the English hook .. I would not recommend to go there in mid winter ..Might be too windy and cold. It's up to you . Its absolutely fantastic!
Anyhow it's hidden gem to me.. If you love bit of history of NYC ..
Many years ago 80's were dangerous to walk around from subway station but now it is safe to walk .. Then there are a HUGE super market so called a Safeway A huge and has almost everything except furniture and bed LOL but there is a dinning area so you could sit by the windows and then look at the Hudson river . It was a beautiful .. Has bathroom too.. then there is the door to go to the dock! from supermarket!
We didn't take a tour Just love to walk!
And then another great news is that there is a ferry NYC $3.75 one way so instead of taking subway you could ride on ferry to the south sea port Manhattan. Then see the "statue of liberty" from Ferry!
There are a bunch of an old buildings.. I think they are at least since 1950's or 60's.
Just go and see it yourself.

We disembarked the Queen Mary here and caught an Uber to take us to our apartment in Brooklyn. There is also a very good ferry here that takes you to a couple of docks in Manhattan. You can walk into Red Hook to a nice residential neighborhood.

It's the end of the shopping street in the Red Hood neighborhood, which is a rather cool area, so if you want to explore a part of Brooklyn, wander down here and observe the port and sea. And there are cafes nearby.

This is where we board the Queen Mary 2, which we have done a number of times. It's an old historic port, an important part of the NYC shoreline and continues to be functional.

Great space but under used. Nice walk down to pier but no access to anything and then it just cuts you off

Next in the line of gentrifying Brooklyn, lots of hipsters have already moved in. Area suffered flooding during Storm Sandy, but looks good now. Former gritty and full of warehouses, now hip. Not so easy to get to.

Easily accessible using the B61 bus, this dock area comprising old warehouses and an interesting range of shops is well worth a visit. There's good views from here and some top food and bar options a short walk away including Hometown BBQ and Brooklyn Crab.
