Mr Bill was an excellent person to share space and time with. He is knowledgeable about photography, Alaska, and the auroras. This was a tailored experience as we were able to move around for the best experience. I would recommend this tour. Bundle up to stay warm and bring snacks!

Where do I start? First of all, Mr. Bill of SkyFire in Focus is one of the most kindest, funniest and easy going person you can talk to in Fairbanks when it comes to Aurora photography workshops and tours. You can tell he leads his work with compassionate and mindfulness from his responsive replies to the how much he cares about his guests. My friends and I had the pleasure of joining Mr. Bill on his Aurora excursion and we had an absolute blast. Mr.Bill is very knowledgable when it comes to photographing the lights and you can be a level 1 photography novice and still photograph some amazing shots of the Aurora with his help. I definitely recommend renting one of his camera kits to shoot the Aurora. My friends and I knew nearly nothing about shooting photos in the dark and Mr. Bill graciously walked us through step by step how to take wonderful shots using one of his camera kits. It is a blessing to be able to witness a good display of the Aurora when you visit Fairbanks and trust me, you will want to take photos of it to last a lifetime. But if you do not want to do photography of your own, this tour is also for you. Mr. Bill will take you to a prime viewing location where you can see the magnificent Aurora dance in the night sky. He will help you take photos in front of the Aurora so you can make all your friends and family jealous. And while you're waiting for the Aurora to show up or want to talk to someone to distract you from the cold, Mr.Bill has got stories and wisdom that will rock your socks off. It's 2020, it's been a rough year... reward yourself for making it through it all with a trip to Fairbanks and an adventure of a lifetime with one of the best people in the business. Thank you SkyFire in Focus for making our dreams come true!!

Another shoutout to Mr. Bill (Owner and Operaror of SkyFire in Focus)! After seeing someone else’s post here about their experience with Mr. Bill, our family had to go and went out on 09/27 north of Fairbanks. It was worth the experience! Mr. Bill has amazing camera equipment he lended out to us and has the heart of a teacher to coach us how to take our own pictures. We did not have to invest in thousands of dollars worth in camera equipment. All we brought with us was our own SD card and we were soon snapping pictures of the aurora with Mr. Bill’s camera gear. He also took several pictures of us with the aurora in the background. The images turned out stunning! /

First off, I'm not one that usually submits reviews. Nay, I'm a lurker reading other reviews - who has time for all these reviews? Well, today is THE day - all because of Mr. Bill! Like you are probably doing, I spent entire DAYS looking at all the tips for viewing, hunting, photographing, and mapping the best spots for capturing the beautiful Aurora. Guess what? I spent 3 nights sleeping in a car, commanding my husband to drive in different locations in terrain neither of us knew much about and surrounded by other visitors who read all of the same suggestions - JUST DON'T. Are you aware that your smart phone is very dumb in Alaska? Good luck with your fancy Hi-Tech phone GPS, ha! Stop the madness, make it caveman easy on yourself - Hire THE Sourdough, Mr. Bill! On our last full day/night (after a multitude of grainy, blurry, out of focus plebian attempts) we took a ride with Bill! First order of business, Dalton Highway to the Arctic Circle! You ain't driving this one yourself, folks! Besides, you would miss out on Bill's EXPANSIVE knowledge of the area, the highway - and dare I say there isn't anyone is Alaska that could know more about the pipeline (he's got the insider knowledge)- he is un-stumpable! We tried! He's also good with road-snacking in the van, and as a snacky woman this it key to keeping the "car cranky" beast at bay for me. Nobody likes her anyway! After the long drive, we stopped at a secret location not to be shared for some real darkness, close to the stars and away from the tourist madness. I brought out my totally expensive camera and got set-up! How exciting! But guess what? Although my camera is totally awesome, I took an expensive as hell photography course - my pictures were way better than the previous 3 nights but looked nothing like the voodoo going on in Bill's camera! Let's face it, He's got the camera, the specific $$ lenses and the knowledge on settings that makes the magic happen! I ditched my expensive crap immediately and begged to use Bill's equipment like a addict for subway cash. Bill laughed, but not in that condescending way - more like a "I thought you might!" as (like any good tour afficianado) he's got a gazillion camera set-up options in the van, charged and ready to go for Lower 48 gawkers like me! How did he even KNOW? Magic? Voodoo? Experience with tourists who find that working those expensive cameras in the dark means if you can't work your camera blindfolded (like he can) then it's GOTTA be a little entertaining for him? Within 2 minutes, I'm set up with a REAL Aurora camera, perfect settings, a beautiful lense - oh lordy, THAT TRIPOD! I'm taking pictures all over the place, I don't even know how this is happening! I went from a ZERO to HERO in 2 minutes flat! I feel like all the photos I took that night should include SkyFire In Focus logo - because in all honesty, if left to my own expensive camera and training devices, it would have been blurry crap in comparison. That night, I walked away with an SD card full of pictures I didn't earn by myself. Thanks to Bill, I have beautiful purples, reds, greens, dark sky backgrounds and gorgeous bright stars, and I mean those stars!! With the zero light pollution (well outside of Fairbanks) they were EVERYWHERE and brighter than I have ever seen in my life. We saw multiple shooting stars, satellites, and those stars twinkled in colors I have never seen before. We also got a beautiful shot of the Milky Way. In closing (finally, right?) I will go to Alaska again, and I WILL call Bill on the FIRST day instead of leaving myself too little room for error or clouds. Do yourself a favor and make it easy. Bill is not only has a wealth of experience concerning history, the Dalton Highway, the Arctic Circle, the Alaska Pipeline, animals in the area, the Aurora Borealis, actually TEACHES and is passionate about photography, but he's also damn funny and a great conversationalist. I know you are thinking this is expensive too, right? It's gotta be! Absolutely not, I would have paid 3 times as much for what I got in return. Don't get me wrong, I love my money more than probably anyone I know (I'm seriously frugal, I once made copper wire by fighting over a penny), but Bill is worth so much more than the low prices he charges. We were with Bill for at least 15 long hours, but it went by so fast. He not only put up with our ridiculous sense of humor all day, but I have to say I don't know if I could have been so patient - he stayed out until Lady Aurora danced away into the darkness. Call Bill, first day - no stress, no blind Aurora hunting, no blurry crap photos, tons of entertainment and learning from a fella that definitely knows what he's doing - a TRUE expert! Thanks again Bill, we will be back!

This review is going to be a bit different from others because thanks to COVID our Alaska itinerary had to be modified, and sadly we are unable to make it to Fairbanks. I had booked this tour last year when our trip planning was in the initial stages based on the excellent reviews. When we were forced to delete the Fairbanks portion I communicated that with Mr. Bill. As you can imagine, this small, independent business is totally dependent on tourists, and clearly he took a big financial hit this year. Despite that fact he refunded our money in full, so I want anyone who reads this to know that you are supporting a small business with an owner who is responsive to communications and is HONEST! Based on reviews he provides an exceptional experience, so you can book with confidence. Should we ever be able to return to Alaska (and based on our trip so far, I wish I lived here!) I would definitely start in Fairbanks and book with Mr. Bill again.
